Ibuprofen is very toxic to dogs. I poisoned my poodle Stewie.

I know we all have a ton of medicine around. 

Our dog Stewie ate some ibuprophen this afternoon. He is at the Animal Er and will be there for two or three nights. We think he ate less than 20 200 mg ibuprofen. I never knew ibuprofen was toxic to dogs and certainly not so exceptionally toxic.

Here is a quote from the MERC Veterinary manual. "An acute single ingestion of 100-125 mg/kg can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and anorexia. Renal failure may follow dosages of 175-300 mg/kg. CNS effects (ie, seizures, ataxia, depression, coma) in addition to renal and GI signs can be seen at dosages >400 mg/kg. Dosages >600 mg/kg are potentially lethal in dogs." 

We got Stewie to the vet quickly, he had already vomited at home once and then the vet once again induced vomiting. He has had medicine to keep his stomach safe and now charcoal and lots of iv fluids. Our hope is that Stewie did not eat very many at all. We did our best to count how many we had, could account for and had taken ourselves. 

I just want you all to know that Ibuprophen is extremely toxic to dogs. Each pill is only 200 mg. and can do huge damage. Stewie chewed open a childproof cap. This is all my fault because I left the bottle where he could reach it.

I just wanted to share so that someone else doesn't do what I did today.

    Oh Ginger!  I do hope your little Stewie will be okay.........you are right though, we never think that what we think is not so bad can be devistating for our beloved pets.  A timely reminder to make sure all medication is kept well out of the way.

    Hoping Stewie has no long lasting effects.

    Oh ginger that is horrible--u have to be so sick about it--we think of kids getting to things not our furbabies--Did he open the bottle??? wow

    Let everyone know how he is tomorrow poor baby..

    Stewie is a 47 pound standard poodle, 1 1/2 years old. He chewed on the white plastic bottle and severed thebig childproof lid from the body of the bottle.

    He has a good chance of pulling through this because he got to care quickly and is being treated. What we believe is his maximum dose is at the low end for kidney damage. 

     Apparently if you don't treat, even a tiny dose of ibuprofen, your pet can get serious gastrointestinal problems including a hole in his stomach!  So you need to get to a vet even if it is one or two ibuprofen.

    Good Ginger cuz i waiting to hear--wow quite a creative way to get to them--I'm surprised that the taste didn't stop it. cuz Did u eer actually taste that--it's so bitter.

    Oh, Ginger!!! So sorry to hear about your furbaby....Cry

    Praying that Stewie makes a complete recovery with no lasting effects from his adventure...

    And please don't blame yourself. I know our furry kids depend on us to do the right thing for them, which you did. But who can ever predict what a dog - or cat - will do? You acted quickly and that's what counts.

    We have good news for Stewie. He comes home from the ICU today. He did vomit again yesterday and has had repeated doses of liquid charcoal. They tell us he was very good about taking the charcoal but is getting pretty tired of it now.  He needs to go back tomorrow for another blood test but we can bring him in.  We were able to go in to visit him last night and he was a happy dog.  

    It appears that the total bill is about $2000.00 dollars. We will take a look at pet health insurance, I never reaalized it was so expensive for inpatient care for a dog. I am so grateful that Stewie is pulling through this.

    YAY!!!!!! Good news for Stewie!!!! 

    When I still had my kitties, I went to a new vet hospital - the "best" in town, as they had all the veterinary specialties under one roof. 

    The first thing they had new patients' humans do was to fill out a questionnaire telling how they regarded their pets:

    Were they absolute members of the family, and you would do absolutely anything to ensure their health and well-being?

    Were they beloved pets, but there was a limit to what you would do in the way of medical treatments?

    Or were they animals, and if they got sick and died, well, that was just a part of life.

    You can imagine which answer was the most popular. Laughing

    Glad your furbaby is home!!!

    OK Ginger now i feel better, and yes it is expensive too much so. but what can u do. I felt so bad for u really--cuz I know I have a dog and cat and they are my family.

    I wanted to let you all know that Stewie is just fine. Our bank account, no so good. 

    Stewie had follow up urine tests and did just fine. 

    I am so glad those pills do not taste good or we would have lost our dog. All our pills are behind closed doors now. 

    Thanks for all the support while Stewie was sick, it is so hard thinking I had harmed this sweet dog.

    I'm so glad Stewie is better, It is so scary to see our pets sick.

    Last year my dog fell on the stairs and broke her leg, unfortunately the vet said she was too old and where the break was they couldn't fix it. At the same time we found out she had bone cancer, that is what caused the break.
