Anyone else allergic to Herceptin?

    Hello Sumair

I had three rounds of Herceptin with an antihistamine, Piriton, in the drip before it was given with no problems.

The nurses decided to try it without the Piriton and I ended up in A&E having a reaction - pains in my right arm, back, pains in my left arm and pain on the left-side of the heart.

Had more Piriton and an injection of Tinzaparin in case it was a clot and A7E sent me home.

The young oncologist I saw a few weeks later said it was a reaction to Herceptin and prescribed Piriton again in the drip and that solved that problem.

It may have affected my heart muscle, however, so waiting to find out. Very unlucky if so.

    Best wishes

    Alice

Yes, I am allergic to Herceptin. Started after the 3rd or 4th weekly dose, even with the steroids, benadryl etc. Tried a rapid desensitization treatment with my allergist which failed also. After extensive attempts with different combos of steroids, etc, my MO said she would not give me any more. Also had a 10% drop in EF. So I only have to hope that 12/52 doses was enough. Also could not tolerate chemo.

Sorry to hear about this. Wishing you the best.

Thanks for your replies. I went into anaphylactic shock with my first dose and was told a second dose could kill me. So, no Herceptin for me. I was also told there is no other med for Her positive. I wonder how it affects the chance of recurrence.

Sumair, yes, I also was allergic. I got more doses under my belt than you before we had to quit, but I am almost 5 years out and still disease free even though I didn't come close to finishing. I know it's concerning not being able to take it, but the whole point of it is to keep you alive, so you can't risk dying because of it - right? I don't know what being allergic means as far as your chances of recurrence without it, but I thought it might give you some reassurance to know how long I've been disease free. Moni having 2 years under her belt disease free is encouraging also...best wishes to you!
