Tracy-I am wondering when you had the blood test for diabetes.  I finished chemo in February of 2012, then started arimidex right after.  Next was radiation, and that was over in mid-April.  Anyway, all during my chemo treatments whenever they did all the blood work, my numbers for blood sugar were high, but the chemo nurses said the steroids and other meds I was taking caused them to be high.  Anyway, after all the treatments were over in mid-April (except for Arimidex, which goes on for 5 years), I went back to my primary care physician to have just a yearly checkup.  I take blood pressure and thyroid medicine, and he sees me at least yearly to monitor that.  My appointment got changed a couple of time, and I think it was up in July when I saw him and got my yearly blood work done.  He said that I was to come back to see him in 6 weeks because my sugar was up.  I can't remember the number, but he said it was within the range for diabetes.  I wound up waiting about a little longer than 6 weeks due to scheduling problems and by the time I had the bloodwork redone, my number was way down to normal again.  It wasn't even pre-diabetic.  He was so surprised.  Anyway, I am just thinking that if you had the test done within a few months of chemo, then you may not really be diabetic.  I would make sure your doctor is aware of your cancer treatment, and ask him to repeat the test in a few months to see if it changes before you worry too much about it.  I like my doctor a lot, but he had no idea that chemo could mess with your sugar levels.  Good luck!

Tracy, as a diabetic myself I can tell you that you can get it under control. But I have to ask if you have been on steroids. If so, steroids really mess with your blood sugar. If you have been taking steroids, I don't know if you need to be tested after being off the steroids before being classified as diabetic. You said your blood was drawn not fasting. That would be the first step to check a fasting blood glucose. The Hemoglobin A1c does not have to be fasting.

http://community.diabetes.org/ is a link to the American Diabetes Association message board. You will find lots of good help over there just like breast cancer patients find tons of help here.
