I have recentky been diagnosed with multi-centric DCIS and IDC in the right breast. The BRCA1 gene mutation is in my family; my aunt tested positive for the gene 14 years ago and there is a significant history of breast and ovarian cancer on my father's side of the family. In terms of mt current treatment plan, I have already participated in genetic counseling, Right now, my blood is being held by a hospital that is waiting for my insurance company to approve coverage before it is sent to the lab in Utah for testing. I'm scheduled for a right side mastectomy and reconstruction on April 11.

My aunt is telling me that if my BRCA result is not known very soon, I will have to cancel my plastics surgeon consultation appt and my pending surgery. She says it's crucial to know whether or not I have the gene mutation before proceeding with my treatment plan (left breast considerations, etc). Is she right? I will reach out to my lead doctor later today with this question but I'm very curious about what people on this site think. I know the BRCA result is very important in terms of long-term decisions but it seems excessive to postpone my plastics consultation and the surgery itself if the testing isn't completed quickly enough. Thoughts?
