And Sharon - ((HUGS)) I'm sure it was painful (not just physically, LOL) to watch them run without you, but you'll be back at it before you know it.
I'm still a little too sore even with a tight sports bra on to run, but it's slowly getting better - hoping to be able to do it by the end of the week. In the meantime, I am taking my dog (who has REALLY missed our runs) and walking our usual 4 mile route through the park today ....

Yay firstcall!!
Today is forecast 6C (43F) in Toronto and the sun is out. I am going to run outdoors instead of the dreadmill. Maybe not as long, but the smell outside is so much nicer.
Am waitlisted for a St. Patrick 5K next Sunday. It sold out while I wasn't looking :-( It's for Achilles, an organization that promotes "running beyond disability". When I have done it in the past, they have a lot of wheelchair and blind participants (with guides) but I have never seen another deaf person and they don't have interpreters for the announcements. The hypocrisy makes me a little disgruntled but by mid-March I am craving a run event so I do it anyway...

Had a very fun time raising money for Breast Cancer Research tonight at Bunco for Breast Cancer! Guess I'm all carb-loaded for a good run tomorrow! LOL.

firstcall - Great news!
So I did a St. Patty's 5K this past Saturday. I had intended to walk, but then I got caught up in the spirit and did jog/walk. Afterwards we gathered at a mexican place, sat outside drinking margaritas and watching the parade. Fun, fun day, and I finished with a blistering pace of 48 minutes LOL. Not having done any running since last fall, my body is paying for it these last two days. When everything stops hurting I intend to start C25K again so I can enter more events, because they really are fun. BTW, this was my second race ever.

OH I had a great run this morning, I have to brag. My usual running partner is 6 years younger than me and much faster but she will sprint ahead and then come back and do my pace. This morning we had a 38 year old kid (with a perfect body I might add) run with us. She joins us on occasion. Today I kept right up and did 8 miles at a 9 minute pace, which I haven't seen in a long time (and don't plan on doing too often). So for right now I'm on a high, w/that endorphin rush.

So great to see this thread! By way of introduction, I used to post on the annual running thread, then took an extended break from BCO, but am now checking back in regularly and thrilled to connect with other runners! I recognize a lot of the names from before (hi goldlining! hi natsfan! hi MOTC!) and am really looking forward to getting to know the rest of you. (Belated congrats, firstline, on your successful surgery and benign results.)
I was diagnosed back in 2008 and managed to run all through chemo, albeit slowly and with a lot of walking at the end. I credit running with helping me keep my mental balance through treatment. Afterwards, I hoped to get back to more-or-less where I was before. That didn't happen, but I also found I cared less than I thought I would. Just being able to run, however slowly, was enough.
I didn't race at all in 2011, then decided to try to get back into it with a couple of 5K's late last year. This year, my goal is to run at least 5 races and train more consistently (including dreaded track workouts). So far I've done a 10K and a 5K, with another 5K coming up March 30 and a half marathon (gulp) on May 18.
So if the keeper of the list could add the Brooklyn Half on May 18 to the list of upcoming races, that would be great! (The 5K is more of a fitness check than a goal race, though I do have two time goals in mind . . . one realistic, one a stretch; if I make my stretch goal, I'm going to reward myself with my first pair of honest-to-goodness racing flats in six years!)
I didn't see this weekend's NYC Half on the list of upcoming races, but if anyone is planning to run it, let me know, and I'll be somewhere along the course cheering for you!

Ugh. So I am in Sea-town for my MUGA and follow-up, and pre-op for exchange next month. I decided to get up early and go utilize the wonderful gym at my hotel. Put on my running shoes and hit the treadmill...everything was completely off! I only ran two miles and the bottoms of my feet are super sore, like I blistered them. This is so not cool, since I'm on foot for the next two days. Yikes! Same socks, same shoes, same pace, different treadmill--any ideas? Tomorrow is going to be a bike and strength training day!

That's really weird, MMTOMH. Is it possible your shoes or socks were damp? That might make them rub and irritate your feet. Hope it's just a passing thing.

Yay, firstcall! And welcome back, lewing. MMTOMH, it could have been the treadmill. They can have a kind of drag on them that may have been throwing off your feet. And remember, its a different surface.
For my half marathon on Saturday it looks like rain. I'm not happy about that but I;ve done it before.

member-rain.....when it rains on a race I just think.....home court advantage. Its not bad once you get going. A hat helps.

I hate running in the rain. I wear glasses and I can't see through the raindrops and they fog up. What do other glasses-wearers do? I already run with hearing aid off because the sweat (let alone the rain) would wreck it. If I leave the glasses off, I am deaf-blind. I did one miserable Half in a plastic poncho. I'm not a rainy runner, but am open to any suggestions for hating it less.

Nope, shoes and socks were dry...my money's on the treadmill. I'm sure my feet aren't used to such a nice machine

Hello everyone. Finally ran my first 5k on Saturday. Had been intimidated by an office race because I am not that fast. I have only been running for 2 years (and had never ran before).
Looking forward to chatting with you all. I think I may train for a half marathon. However, it may take a year...LOL.

MMTOMH - I hope your feet are feeling better! I would assume it was the treadmill, too ... sometimes the surface friction creates extra heat that can make your feet burn when on it for a long time.
Sorry Member to hear that your race will be in the rain, hopefully it won't be heavy cold rain!
Okay, I went to the Dr on Monday and she thinks I have a slight tear in a tendon in my groin (adductor tendonitis was the dx) ... no MRI was done but I had some bruising. I am restricted from running for at least 2 more weeks and if it's not better by 8 weeks ... then physical therapy. She said I can do the elliptical, bike, swim and aqua run. Has any of you ever aqua ran before when injured? I looked it up and it seems to be the best option to keep your running muscles active and soothing to the injury as well ... before I invest in the needed belt to do it, I am hoping to get some opinions about it. I want to be able to keep my strength/endurance up as much as possible.

Congrats on your first race, Belinda! You're going to get addicted like the rest of us, I just know it.
Goldlining, I wear glasses and also have problems in rain (and snow and mist and fog). Mostly I just leave them off --only one of my eyes is really bad, and so I can see pretty well without them (well enough to avoid cars, anticipate curbs, and even read street signs if the light's good and I squint a little). There *is* an anti-fogging product I got for my husband, an avid cyclist who can't see at all without his glasses, that helps a little. You rub a small amount on your lenses before you go out. I don't use it regularly (I always forget), nor does he, to be honest (it was one of those "gee, honey, how . . . thoughtful" presents) but in my experience it kinda sorta works for mist and light rain. The stuff I got is called "fogzero"; you can probably find it at a bike store, maybe at a running store.
Sharon, that's a major bummer on the groin tear. I have tried what I told myself was "aqua running" when I was injured, but I didn't really know what I was doing. It was sort of a combination of treading water and drowning. So you probably don't want pointers from me!

MOTC - you and I are in the same boat with DC-MD weather this weekend - looks like cold rain for my 5K in Hagerstown too. I can't imagine dealing with that for an entire HM! Belinda - good to see another Marylander! You sound like me - I just started running in 2011 too, but am getting addicted. And talk about being slow - that's me! But what the heck - I'm out there and so are you. If you're looking to bump from a 5K to a 10K, Pikes Peek in Rockville next month is a good one - it's running down Rockville Pike and is a mild downhill most of the way. I tackled that last year as my first "big" race and found it quite doable.
Sharon - I've not done aquarunning, but I work for our local Rec Dept and our deep water running classes are quite popular with runners and other athletes recovering from injury.

Mary, thanks for the 10k info. They seem to be hard to find. I need to do this. The Tamoxifen is causing some weight gain. Very frustrating but blessed that it is avaiable. Seems crazy to work out every day, follow Weight Watchers the maintenance level and still gain. UGH. I figure more running! Please it really helps me relax.

Hi all . . .
OK, I'm enjoying my lunch and reading the newspaper and I'm hit with an article re the new studies published in the New England Jornal of Medicine about radiation for breast cancer being tied to heart risk. It scares me because now it seems they take more precautions (i.e. having women inhale and hold their breath while being zapped to nudge the heart out of the way). But 10 years ago when I was first diagnosed w/DCIS I just followed along blindly not being fully aware of the risks.
Is anyone else concerned about this? It seems as runners we think we're invincible . . . do I have to worry every time I go out for a run ???

Yes, a little concerned. However, did not want any bad cells to escape. If it gives more 40 more years it's worth it.

Boy I've missed alot in the intervening days/ weeks. Re-excision is over and in the rear view mirror, news is good, and now it's on to radiation.
Firstcall - congrats on your wonderful news. What a relief.
Belinda - congrats on your first 5k. Woot! If you want to do a half, you can - ask anyone on this board who has done one. It's all about mindset and training.
SharonLC - I have a love/hate relationship with pool running. It's a terrific way to maintain your fitness, but boy can the tedium set in . Doing a 'workout' can help cut boredome if you are by yourself (e.g., warm up, 1 minute fast, 1 minute slow, 2 minutes fast, 1 minute slow etc). You can also tuck a small ipod under a baseball cap no problem, though you will get some funny looks. I never quite figured out how to determine distance equivalents, so I just used my long run pace as a proxy. X number of minutes in the pool = long run pace's worth of miles on the road. Sometimes good enough is.
LuvLuLu - no good words of wisdom, other than that you went with the best information you had at the time. It's gotten you this far. Perhaps a call for a checkup if you are concerned? (Sorry know this isn't terrifically helpful or reassuring).

Belinda absolutely a Half is reasonable. The only question is speed/pace. I went from never running other than catching a bus to a Half in 18 months. That Half was my personal best time, since the magnified-views mammogram that started this BC crap was waiting for me when I flew home. I always say, for a 10K, to impress anyone, you want to be fast, but a Half, you just need to be stubborn. As long as you can walk steadily and reasonably briskly for 3 1/2 hours, you can do a Half. Now the question becomes, can you do it in less than 3 1/2 hours? I did 3:06 6 weeks post-DIEP, when I had not even been able to straighten up full until two days before the run. There is really no need to go any slower than that!!
Bottom line, I'm not going to win THE race. I'm just racing MY race. if it is fun to be there, I will take what I get. There's enough medals for everyone :-)

Goldlining, what a great point! I am doing this for me. I won't win a "race" but I want to win MY race. So true. I never thought of it that way. Thanks for everyone's encouragement! Went from coach potato, lost 40 pounds (was more before tamoxifen) and now run/exercise everyday. ...and I am definitely stubborn. LOL
