So...whats for dinner?

Carole, we did manage to bike about 7 miles on the tammany trace today, but it was cold. It was supposed to get up to 50 or so, therefore I wore bike shorts. It never made it past 48 and my knees got cold. The wind was vicious too. It was a lovely trail though and I look forward to doing it again sometime. We had lunch at the brew pub where I got an excellent catfish po'boy then toured the brewery. Tried a couple of other abita beers, but purple haze is still my fave. The root beer was good too. We love beau rivage too and in fact we're staying there a couple of nights.
Tonight we are having Chinese/Vietnamese at a restaurant that was recommended to us. That will be a nice change before I start my seafood assault again.
Hope everyone its having a great weekend! -
Nance, hope your anniversary was great! I extended wishes to you last night which evaporated along with my lost post. I particularly hate that happening when I decide to finish a post before heading to bed, and then lose it.....should be lesson learned! But by the AM I am apt to forget....which brings me to my MO and Tamox story....
I had my MO appt yesterday (dragged myself there despite waking up with a sore throat and mouth full of cankers...today a headache has joined them!)and we went through my symptom list and concerns about QOL since being on Tamox (mainly the sleep problems, ensuing fatigue...stabbing knuckle pain along with the cognitive "fog", poor memory, intermittent night leg cramps, and cosmetic issues like hair thinning and nails breaking). She was very sympathetic and suggested we tease out what is and is not related to Tamox by my taking a three week break (Yay!!) and journaling about those conditions. Monday I will start this little vacation and see how it goes. She is also not so concerned about the benedryl problem with Tamox and supports my using it as needed for allergic reactions. Her optimism about "our" being able to improve my QOL while taking meds was encouraging. So we will be dealing with this in small steps.
I appreciated that my MO spent a full hour with me going over my pathology findings to help me see why she recommends the hormonal therapy. I had actually conveniently forgotten that micro mets had entered a lymph node, bringing me to Grade 2 and closer to a 30 percent recurrence rate. My oncotype score was extremely low (4), but I had also forgotten that that low recurrence percentage rate was based on having 5 years of rx with Tamox or other hormonal rx.
This doc is so compassionate, bright, and reasonable that I do feel hopeful that we will work this out in a sensible way. Besides the fact that I so like and respect this woman, I may be feeling a bit of euphoria about the fact that I can say goodbye to Tamox for three weeks starting Monday! A true night of restorative sleep would be wonderful. She is also referring me to a stamina building class that the center offers, which I feel can be helpful....especially if I can start getting some sleep!
She also thought that trying biotin for the hair thinning was a good idea. So that's the lowdown for now....Am hoping that this damn virus will pass quickly...had been so happy (smug?) that I escaped illness this whole winter...HA! Enjoyed it while I could.
Carole, I have to chuckle at your apologizing for your region's weather! If I were to apologize to everyone who had a cold or rainy day on a visit to Beantown, I'd be exhausted! On the other hand I never take credit for our beautiful weather either!
I am surprised at the temp variations you have had this winter....unusual? Michelle, I had a note from a doc a couple of years ago to have a wheelchair in the airport due to a sprained foot. I never had to use the note...just asked for it when making reservation, and easy as pie. They were very accommodating....only thing was that I was flagged for a whole body scan and pat down before my flight home. So I would suggest that you leave your contraband at home.
I'm sure it will go fine....and I hope you have a great trip to AZ!Having leftover lamb shank , brussells sprouts and salad tonight....if I close this down and get it going! Loved hearing about your duck drop off, Susan.
-
Lacey, enjoy your tamox vacation! I really don't know what to think of the hormone therapy dilemma. The aches and pains have diminished but now my normally thick hair is thinning drastically. I've been taking biotin and using a biotin shampoo, but it's very distressing. My oncotype was 26 so it's kind of a no brainer for me, but that doesn't mean I have to like it lol! Hope you're feeling better soon.
-
Lacey, I am favorably impressed with your MO based on your account of the appointment. It will be interesting to see how you feel during this 3 wk hiatus. Your oncotype number was even lower than mine. I have not had any problem sleeping since I began taking arimidex. I take it at night and also take a benedryl. Then main difference I see is the aging of my skin. But that could be...aging!
This winter has been fairly typical except for getting more rain than we get some winters. Our cold weather never lasts long, usually a couple of days and then we have a warming trend. So winter temperatures range from 70's to 30's. Next week looks really nice. Spring usually arrives in March and the azaleas burst into bloom. Spring has its miseries in the form of pollen. The pine pollen is already starting to film everything with yellow coating.

So far Sharon hasn't had too many issues with the Tamoxafin. The most noticable thing is some sleepless nights, but not too many and none in a row. Lacey, I have confidence they will get the side effects under control.
Watching two sets of treatments about 30 years apart, I can say the side effect management is much better now. Back then, the side effects, regardless of severity, were dismissed with, "That's to be expected." This time, Sharon's oncologist spent as much time preventing side effects as on the actual treatment. I was very much relieved.
Nance, I hope your anniversary celebration went well. Sharon and I are celebrating ours tomorrow....24 years... The real date is Monday.
Deb...That's a great picture. Where is he going next? My dad's Marine bootcamp graduation picture is black and white...dad joined the Marines March 4, 1934.

Rich will be 19 in June, I have no idea where he will be going next. My Dad was in the Navy.

This picture is celebrating his 81st birthday, he passed in June 2012 at 84.

Just returned from a beautiful ski week in Breckenridge with DD, DGD, and DGS! DGD came all the way from Hawaii where she lives in a tree house and does organic farming, so it was a real treat for her to have the convenience of running water and a real bed to sleep..lol. She is a beautiful spirit and attracts good wherever she goes...really....a lesson for us all!
We were really lazy after long days of skiing, so we ate out most of the time. I didn't have anything off the charts to rave about, but the lamb chops tasted good, at least until DGD (vegetarian) described how the poor little things were abused by being kept in cages their entire lives. Fortunately it wasn't during dinner that she told that story...we at least got to enjoy our meal...lol.
Deb: That's a beautiful photo!
I have to catch up on my reading after being off the site for so long, but I wish everyone a very happy Sunday, and send lots of positive energy!
-
Lacey, Biotin worked kind of well for me.
Auntie No No Hahahha I am going with the dark blond streaks. I am "returning my hair to it's natural color" today.
I found the greatest book I am going to make butter lettuce and clementine slad with brown butter vinaigrette. I am addicted to clementines.
-
Bedo, that sounds like a truly ambitious and inventive supper! Lentil soup and toast for me. I did not even make the lentil soup. You could say I was the director of the soup.
Have been seriously not hungry lately. Trying to do protein shakes, veg juices, etc. Teaching today (again) -- done at six. And then, Beer me!
For dessert I'm going to have that ice cream made from coconut milk! It's mocha maca with cacao nibs. OMG, it is fantastic. It's not too sweet.

-
Bobogirl - tell me more about the coconut milk ice cream. Last night I made 1/2 recipe of Coconut Pumpkin Bread Pudding. It's something I would usually not make because not sure DH would eat it. He loved it. I'm very unhealthy and don't care. Have either a cold or allergies. Would guess allergies as the south wind is just howling. Don't care what it is right now, if I want it I'll eat it.
Trader Joes was OUT OF the frozen leeks last week. Tried 2 days in a row. They were due in that evening. Don't expect to back to Fort Worth this month at all which means thank goodness all my doc appts are done for a while. Wish I knew of another frozen source. Relish Mag has a recipe today for Caramelized Leek Bread Pudding. I bought 2 humoungous (sp) heirloom tomatoes at Central Market last week. I think I seen some sliced with some gorgonzola cheese and crackers. More hot tea.
-
Luvmygoats:
Oh, I will tell you more about the ice cream. So much more!
First off, they've got coconut ice cream at Trader Joe's -- it's super cheap, and the chocolate is good. But this one I have here -- I think it's called Larry and Luna, or something like that -- this one is from the health food co-op, it's fancier. It's coffee-flavored (it's vegan, BTW), and it's got maca in it (which is good for you, I guess) and cacao nibs instead of choc chips (antioxidants). It's not very sweet. Excellent mouth feel. It's sooo good. I put a drop of coconut coffee creamer in mine -- just a drop -- and kind of whoosh it up as I am eating it.
They also make a "naked" flavor with almond and fudge. I imagine it's like Haagen Daaz' vanilla swiss almond. The "naked" is exciting -- I am hoping it is just pure coconut milk, no flavoring. That sounds so good to me!
There is your thorough ice cream update. Leek bread pudding sounds fab.

Worked in the garage all day yesterday, taking advantage of the cooler weather. Everything is now looking a lot better and my car fits without a lot of manuvering...lol! Ran across old photos that held lots of good memories!
Last night I watched an old movie, Peyton Place, and marvled that it was scandalous at the time it first came out...lol! Not quite Fifty Shades! Wow...I've seen and heard it all!
Last night's dinner was angel hair spagetti with tomato bits and eggplant stacks with tomato bits and parm cheese...delicious! Sometimes its fun to just cook for yourself...anything you want! My new sweetie will be returning to Florida later this week, but in the meantime, I have lots to keep me busy.
Happy Monday everyone!
-
Kaara- Glad you had such a great family ski trip! Loved the pics on Facebook. Your dinner last night sounds good! I can't remember the last time I cooked for myself- well for only me and had just what I wanted. I loved the book Peyton Place, never watched the movie.
We had a kind of boring weekend, had take out Saturday night and last night had a steak on the grill with a baked potato, salad and broccoli. Tonight we are having steamers- because the boys begged for them- and a roast pork loin because DH begged for that. I am not in the mood for either. But I sent DH to the grocery store yesterday morning while stayed home and cleaned the house and these are the things he came home with.
Joyce- Because of your post earlier lasagna is on the menu for this week! Hope you are well, miss seeing your posts.
-
Last night was a salmon with yogurt, bread crumbs and orange slices dish. It was very good.
Kara, your pasta dish sounds just like the dish Sharon loves and is going to cook tomorrow.
Eric -
Eric -- recipe for the salmon please?

-
Having a "skinny" dinner tonight. Pan seared catfish, steamed broccoli and chopped salad.
-
Tonight is pork loin also. I fillet it out and stuffed it with herbed stuffing and then rolled it back up, secured and popped in the oven. Will do mashed potatoes and a mushroom gravy and some veges.
When I lived alone, one of my favorites was sauteed mushrooms on top of brown rice, or elbow macaroni with stewed tomatoes. Couldnt get anyone (except my son) in this household to eat as simple as that. I used to be very thin back then! Oh how things have changed.
-
Carrie- I couldn't agree more! When I lived alone my dinner more often than not was diced tomatoes, mushrooms and red onion, I would cover it with cheese and nuke it just enough to melt the cheese, add diced lettuce and have it as a wrap with salsa and sour cream. I was soooo skinny. Sigh...
-
Carrie, those simple foods you ate when you were single sound good to me. The important thing with pork loin is not overcooking it. I've had to cure myself of the old tendency to cook pork well-done, which equates with dry.
-
Carrie, your pork loin sounds yummy. Love stuffed rolled meats. I know what you mean about the expanded eating habits we develop due to feeding others. I was just thinking about that today....that if DH didn't have to eat so well/much, (and he has a fast metabolism, damn!) I would, most nights, be satisfied with sparse meals....like years ago when I was much thinner!

Tonight we had an asparagus/red pepper/onion fritatta to go with some soup I wanted us to finish up.
Aside from food.....
Today is the day I was to start my Tamox holiday.....but not without issue. I made the mistake of telling my DDIL about my plan....bad idea! I received an alarmist phone call from DS1 last evening (they are both surgeons....not oncologists, tho they do see patients with cancer in their specialties) strongly suggesting that I was being foolhardy to go this route to try to deal with sorting out my symptoms. OY! He was unrelenting in his opinion that I was putting myself at unnecessary risk for recurrence...for taking this short break.....AND he figures (worries) that if the three week hiatus goes well, I will not return to my standard of care treatment. So today I emailed my MO just to be sure that I am not being foolish. She definitely supports this diagnostic hiatus for me and knows that while I expressed my wish to bag the hormone treatment, she has convinced me for the time being to work with her around making it work. Lord is she a lovely person and smart doc! She also offered to explain all of what we are doing to my "know it all" doc children, but I think we will just drop it until the next phone call comes rolling in. Interesting to have this familial role reversal. I am suddenly the naughty child....competing with Bedo perhaps!?
Suffice it to say that I did NOT take Tamox today.
Back to food....I signed up for a chili cookoff on Saturday at the local Produce Market in our town. Now all I have to do is actually write up the recipe I put together(as well as make it and bring it!)....that will take some discipline that I have been lacking in recent months.
Maybe I'll get on the computer and start that recipe right now! -
Today I came home from work early, as I was wiped out, and went to sleep. When I awoke, I saw my DD walking in with a 5-6 pound chihuahua. She then went to play practice. "don't worry, she's mine" she said, "but I don't have the money for the adoption fee etc. Hahhaa. Worlds biggest sucker.
I was to have a lovely canned salmon salad, but I see in the fridge that she mixed it with Tuna Helper. I will Not Eat That
Back to wasabi almonds and pomegranate water and working on my presentation..... still. I did get a good walk in with the dogs. The cats are acting like it's par for the course.
Tomorrow I will make the butter lettuce salad. Tonight I will make my mason jar salads for work. I've also started bringing cottage cheese or organic yogurt topped with canned pineapple in the jars and V8 juice. or seltzer water. I'm "kind' of on a health kick.
Hope all are well
-
The health kick here is to prepare food that I will enjoy. DH made a perfect burger patty with steamed green beans and 4 cheese mac&cheese (from a box). I ate almost every bite - that patty was 5 ounces or so and he cooked it a perfect medium rare. This is probably the biggest meal I've eaten in more than a week. I think tomorrow night will be Chinese Pie. Notice the pattern here - foods with lot of moisture.
Lacey - you're going to have to keep a few secrets or those docs will be all over you! It seems to me that a 3 week Tamox holiday shouldn't be that dangerous.
Bedo - LOL, your life with DD is always interesting!
-
Lacey, I would love to take a 3-wk holiday from arimidex just to see how it would feel not to take it. That's really dear that your son and DIL are so concerned about you.
Michelle, your dinner sounds delicious. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I'll bet your dh was pleased.
My skinny dinner tasted really good. There's a lot to be said for being hungry!
-
Lacey- It sounds like your Dr is very in-tuned to how you feel and what is going on. You are so lucky! I also think it is sweet that your family is worried about your taking a break. I would probably do the same thing with my mom. But you and your Dr know best. Enjoy your break, keep yourself informed. You are a smart lady with a great doc- you will do great!
Carol- Glad you enjoyed your skinny dinner! I need more of them!
Michelle- I am glad you enjoyed your DH's dinner. Sometimes things just "hit the spot" glad it did for you tonight.
Bedo- You are making me feel guilty with your mason jar salads and health kick. I vow to have salad for lunch tomorrow.
So dinner was ok, I had about 3 steamers and a very small portion of pork. I am still bloated from eating BK last Friday. I swear- never again.
-
Let's see, when I lived alone meals were either cereal, ramen noodles, popcorn or hi power tamales in a can. it seems like I ate a hamburger every day of my life in my 20s. And of course, I was 50 pounds lighter. Where did that metabolism go?
For dinner tonight I had stuffed soft shell crabs and jumbo gulf shrimp with an Italian chopped salad. Last night was stuffed crabs, flounder and fried oysters. I think I'm finally reaching my seafood saturation point. Actually, I'm reaching my dining out saturation point. Looking forward to cooking my own meals again. Don't get me wrong, I could stay down here with the tropical vegetation, blooming azaleas, seashore, wildlife and mild winters forever, but I do miss my kitchen. -
Another lost post....damn! Giving up til tomorrow!
-
I think we have to do what our instincts tell us...I take tamoxifen, but only half the prescribed dose because I read European studies that say it works just as well for those with early stage BC. I have little or no side effects from it. My MO would probably freak out if I told him. I think my healthy diet will have more to do with keeping me from having a recurrence. I lost all the weight around my mid section and my MO is very pleased with that. I try and exercise some every day.
It was funny...when my DD and I skied together this year, she marveled at how I was able to keep up with her and not get tired...lol! I wasn't out of breath once in the high altitude. She's actually starting to listen to me about eating well. DGS was suffering from altitude sickness and when I insisted that he have eggs and bacon for breakfast instead of his usual pancakes, he immediately got better. What he needed was some protein and a little fat in his system.
Today I visit my MO for my check up and don't expect any surprises...just a routine visit.
Have a great day everyone.
-
Lacey I took a break from the Tamox when I was having those bad headaches. Dr. suggested 3 week break but it turned out it wasnt necessary as we immediately figured out it wasnt the Tamox, but needed an adjustment to my BP med. Only had 1 week off. I think I am handling the Tamox pretty well without too much grief, but after 2 years of being in chemo induced menopause, I got a period last week! Now wondering if the Tamox is doing its job....I will be 55 this year...WTH?
Kaara You are an inspiration with the healthy eating. Cant wait for the summer veges here!
Last night pork roast was sooo good, the stuffing really made it moist. this was a huge $10 roast that I cut in half upon purchase...good bargain as we have leftovers from this half and the other in the freezer for future.
Michelle YAY on eating that yummy sounding meal. Your husband is a gem!
Auntie It would take me a long time to get to that saturation point with the seafood. But I hear ya on being in control of the meals.
