I have always thought that I couldn't get private insurance if I left my job due to hx breast cancer and another condition.  I think I tried once and was quoted a very high price or turned down.  Is there anything like Cobra for life insurance or health insurance that isn't as expensive?  How does the "everyone is required to buy medical insurance in Mass work?  Is there insurance for people who decide to live overseas for a while?  Sorry for all the questions, but I'm thinking of not working for a while and am not eligible for medicare.

    Bedo,

Can you access long term disability with your company?  You may qualify for cobra, but cobra is expensive.

Some group life insurance policies allow you to convert to a private policy, usually for a lesser amount. Cobra is expensive but right now you would be declined for private insurance. Next year Obamacare requires guaranteed acceptance with preexisting conditions.

I am wondering if someone can help me with an insurance problem.

I went on Medicare in November of 2012.  Medicare is paying for my Xeloda presscription but my supplement is denying payment, stating that "this drug is not a covered benefit under your plan."  We also checked with my Meidcare Part D drug benefit and they do not cover Xeloda.

Does anyone have experience with something like this?  We just received a bill from the specialty pharmacy where I get my Xeloda.  The co-insurance for each prescription is over $300.00.  I read that Genetech offers help with co-pays but it also said the assistance is not available if you are on Medicare.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Melissa, with Obama Care will there be limits on the amounts that they can charge those with pre-existing conditions?  I'm not sure, I don't think that I was exactly turned down, but told it would be over 600-800 a month for an individual policy for me for health ins that would be similair to my work one and cover those pre-existing conditions, and for life insurance I felt a new one out but realized I would be turned down, so thanks for the idea to change from my work one if I leave for life insurance.

    Thanks!

Bedo, I don't think they will be able to upcharge you for preexisting conditions. I have heard they can for smoking. How old are you? The problem is that health insurance is very expensive & I believe that Obamacare is going to make it skyrocket. Your employer insurance probably cost as much as an individual policy, it's just that you only pay a small percentage of your premium & the employer pays the rest. Supposedly those with low incomes will receive tax credits/financial assistance with their premiums.

I'm not saying that all group life policies allow conversion. Probably most don't, but it is worth checking in to. No life insurance company is going to issue a policy to anyone recently diagnosed with cancer unless it is a very low face guaranteed issue policy with sky-high premiums. Many of those don't pay out for the first two years either
