Hey so I'm new here . I am 21 yrs old. Had a bilaterAl prophylaxtic mastetcomy on 2/4 . Having a rough time being so young going thru this. Went to local support group and the closest person to my age there was in her 50's . Nd no offense to older woman but is kinda hard to relate to someone older. Hoping to find someone around my age who maybe had deal with this while in college and is going thru it or who already has and has any advice on how to make things better ?

    Hi TMorrison9,

    I am 23 years old, I was diagnosed last year with breast cancer and had bilateral mastectomy with tissue expanders last year on 12/05. So I am almost 3 months out of surgery. I honestly have to say that some days are good and some days are bad. Just have to take it one day at a time. I am not in college, I am a nurse. I took one month off of work to recover. I would say the first week or two were the hardest right after surgery. But slowly but surely you start feeling normal and start feeling like yourself again. When people still ask me how I am doing now, almost 3 months I still say I am not 100% but I'm getting closer every day. I even did push ups the other day at the gym!

    But anywho I was diagnosed with right breast cancer, however I chose to do a prophylactic left mastectomy (mainly I did not want to worry about ever having breast cancer on the left side, and plus I wanted my boobs to be symmetrical). Sometimes I wonder if it was the right decision (I could have done lumpectomy and radiation instead). I think for every women the right decision is different. I think I feel better knowing I don't have to ever worry (or at least very very minimal risk now). I also got tissue expanders in, so now I get to have bigger boobs haha (was small chested before this). And also its normal to be sad, upset, frustrated, or mad. It's okay to feel those feelings. The other week I got upset and cried and I'm almost 3 months out. To lose your boobs as a woman is a hard thing to do, and also maybe even harder for us women that are so young.

    I think what keeps me content with everything is that I know I don't have to worry about cancer anymore. I don't have to have constant sonagrams, MRI's, lumpectomys, and dr apointments. I am waiting for my implant surgery and hopefully that will be my last surgery for a long long time. Sorry I wrote a lot! please message me if you have any other questions or anything at all.

    Hi TMorrison9,

    My name is Justine and I am 24 years old. I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 23 in July 2012. I underwent the bilateral mastecomy in Aug 2012 with immediate reconstruction (tissue expanders). I couldn't have nipple sparing (in one breast...so I opted to remove both for eveness). I underwent chemo from Sept 2012-mid-Feb 2012 (finished 2 weeks ago). Now I'm on Tamoxifen for 5 years. I am a graduate student and continued to go through school throughout treatment. I do not frequent these boards as much to be honest. However, please feel free to private message me. I love to talk to people my own age about this...because you are right...it is different for us.

    Hope you are getting through this okay and know that there are people out there that get it!

    Justine =)
