Vitamin E
I apologize for the redundancy.; I just posted this as a reply because I couldn't figure out how to post a new topic.
My rad onc recommended I take two 500 unit tabs of Vitamin E twice a day. I said "What does it do?" and he said "We dont' know."
But apparently it can be effective against recurrence. Anybody been prescribed this?

I too, was recommended by my RO to take Vitamin E and C together 3 times a day.

Interesting, Mam. Did they tell you why?
-
Interesting. I am 100% ER+, and my MO has prohibited me from taking either Vitamin A or Vitamin E, as they are anti-oxidants.
Her reasoning is that recent studies have shown that while anti-oxidants help normal cells live longer, they may also be helping cancer cells live longer.
So no supplements for me; she wants me to get these nutrients from food alone.
Amazing what variations there are in the information we are given by our MOs!

Are you sure it was E and not vitamin D that was suggested? E usually comes as 400 unit capsules (not 500) while, in order to be confusing, D in the same strength can either be tablets or caps! Vit C=ascorbic acid would be a 500mg tab.
D deficiency can be determined by a blood test. Supplements might be in the range of 1000-2000 units daily and do not need to be taken in divided doses. There is also prescription ergocalciferol for weekly or monthly use: 50,000 unit capsules.
Studies are showing a link between low D levels & cancer, so ask for the lab test if you haven't had one! It is not easy to get enough from food sources and, although our skin makes it when exposed to sun, in winter that's not a reliable method if you require a big boost.

KimbytheSea,
My RO recommended taking Vit. E and C together as they are anti-oxidants to help heal from the Rad. burns that I had after completing my treatment. I did have a difficult time healing after and she thought that this therapy would be helpful. The MO is aware of this and told me to continue taking it.

I've read not to take Vit E if you are taking tamoxifen.

My Rad Onc seemed to think the Vit E would help prevent recurrence. I was all healed from the radiation when he recommended it.
Now I'm freaking myself out about the possible cardiac problems as far as 20 years down the road.
I just saw a March article on this and it has me bummed.
