Curcumin and aspirin as preventatives

I have been taking low dose aspirin and recently started taking curcumin tablets for the reputed anti-cancer benefit.

I notice on the product label that curcumin is anti-inflammatory and can be used for joint problems etc.

I'm just wondering whether, as both aspirin and curcumin are anti-inflammatory treatments, there is added benefit in taking both?

I would appreciate input from ladies with knowledge of these topics.

Hi Racy, Firstly, I don't have a difinitive answer to your question, but I started on low dose asprin recently after my Mx. My surgeon suggested it because I had Mondors right after the surgery. He also said that there was research that suggested asprin is especially good for women as it is a preventative for bowel cancer and of course heart disease.

I said that I would be happy to take another anti inflammatory because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, but he said that it was a low dose  that wouldn't have any effect on that.

I take Lyprinol (green lipped mussel extract) for my RA, (Anti inflammatory) it is also very good for respiratory health, and eat curcumin, along with as as many anti inflammatory foods as I can. I was told about the benefits of curcumin for Arthritis many years ago, had no idea it was for reducing Ca risk as well. Well, I guess I haven't eaten enough!

All the reading I have been doing of late certainly points to most illness being caused by inflammatory action in the body.  This is backed up by my Rheumatologist of 16 years who, thankfully, is also very into alternative medicine in tandem with traditional cutting edge medication.

I have been taking curcumin for about 3 years and added low dose aspirin last year - in addition to its anti-cancer/pro heart properties - I figured it would help mitigate the tendency for tamoxifen to cause blood clots.

Anyone reading this: ask your doctor about taking aspirin if you also take an SSRI anti-depressant. The two may be contraindicated if taken together on a regular basis.

    Hi,

I take an aspirin daily and curcumin. The curcumin is supposed to help protect against tamoxifen resistence, and the aspirin has been shown to prevent recurrence.  I don't have the research right at hand, but a quick google with "google scholar" should give you credible evidence.

I never read that a daily aspirin was contraindicated for my effexor that I take to mitigate hot flashes from tamoxifen.

I take low dose aspirin daily too.  I also take curcumin too.  My curcumin supplement is combined with Boswellia which is a further anti-inflammatory.

No one is absolutely sure of the mechanisms at work in the possible links between aspirin use and prevention of cancer or metastasis.  ASA is an inhibitor of the enzyme cycloxygenase ( both Cox 1 and 2), cox 2 being the promoter of prostaglandin production which triggers inflammation.  Curcumin may also be an inhibitor of cox2, and that could be the common link.  These things are so complex, that without actual testing it would be impossible to say whether or not the two could act additively.  The way I would approach the problem is purely from a cost benefit analysis.  Cost being a combination of $, potential harm, side effects and negative interactions, benefit being level of proof of actual benefit (factoring in your actual risk of recurrance).
