I'm not BRCA1 or 2 positive, but I am PALB2 positive which is a partner gene of the BRCA2.  Very rare.  Lucky me.  Anyways, I'm going in to have my other breast removed to lower my risk of getting breast cancer again.  I met with surgeon and he wants a mammogram and ultrasound first to make sure there nothing is hiding out that we don't know about.  I have a few questions:

1. Is that the normal protocol?

2. Should I push for an MRI or should that be adequate?

3. After removal, will they still check it thoroughly?  I'm worried that the mammo and US will make them lazy about thoroughly checking it.

weety- so sorry you have to make yet another difficult decision.  I was negative for BRCA1 &2. when I was diagnosed with BC I decided at that time to remove both, just because I did not want the worry to always be there. A good Dr/surgeon will examine both tissues, mine did and my right breast tissue came back fine. My cancer side I was told was just IDC but upon further examination found DCIS as well. I think a mammo/sono combo would be fine, but if you feel that you need an MRI, then I would push for it. Right now you have to set your mind at ease with this. Good luck.

After my dx, left breast, they noticed microcalcifications in the right. I didn't hesitate to decide on a bmx. This was via mammo and I was in no mood for further tests (one doc suggested a biopsy of that breast). All surgically removed tissue is biopsied so they will know if anything was lurking. Good luck to you.
