Vitamin D Supplement Potency Varies Widely

Options

If you've had trouble getting your vitamin D level up with supplementation, this might be one of the reasons:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130211162231.htm

"The analysis showed that the amount of vitamin D in these supplements ranged from 9 percent to 146 percent of the amount listed on the label. Not only was there variation among different brands and manufacturers, but also among different pills from the same bottle."

That's very troubling, but enlightening if someone is having trouble getting their Vit D levels up.  Do you suppose this also extends to food that has Vit D added?

Very interesting.  I believe this may be why the Carlson liquid drops were more effective to increase my Vit D level.

I just checked the Vit D brand I am taking, an inexpensive "natural' one available at most drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc.  It is USP tested and verified.  There is a reference to www.uspverified.org  for more information.

Vitamin D gets you calcium to help the body get as much of the nutrients as possible. We all need vitamin D as well as sublingual vitamin D. Try to get it through natural sources. Some of the natural sources are milk, orange juice, spinach and various greens.

Can folks who are maintaining adequate vitamin D levels post what brand and dosage of vitamin D they are taking? I had gotten my level up to the 40's after taking a 6-week regimen of the prescription high dosage vitamin D, but my level is going down again while taking 2000iu/day. Thanks!

mamabee,  I take Nature Made brand, which has the USP seal on it.  My vitamin D levels went from 30 to 52 in a relatively short time (? 3-4 months).  I take anywhere between 3-5,000iu per day.  That includes the 1,000iu's that in the calcium I take.

Thanks wenweb! I'll get some Naturemade. I've been using Now Foods Vitamin D, but I'm going to see if another brand helps me maintain an adequate level.

I use Country Life vitamin D 2500 iu and take one or two a day. A few months ago my labs showed my blood levels to be around 72. I've used this brand for years.
