Any artists here dealing with LE?
I have tried searching of any stories of any fellow artists who had issues after surgery...
I paint, draw, create fiber art--- I'm just like that- I have to be making something all the time.
Post surgery found me not being able to get much done- drawing after just an hour was starting to mess up my wrist. Painting hurts too.
My art is my life and not having a right arm right now is upsetting.
Does it get better?
I know I'm fresh outta surgery- but I have no idea what to expect.
Nobody I know personally that went through this was an artist that used their arm. Anyone here?
I am not full blown balloon arm- but it definitely feels like it's constantly being shut in a car door.
Getting worse and puffy if I push it.
Not being able to pick up my kid is the worst, but not being able to pick up a paintbrush for hours like I used to is right next to it. I miss my bliss
thanks ladies

Mandala, most important thing you can do is GET HELP NOW! You don't mention seeing a well-trained lymphedema therapist for a Therapy Intensive, but doing so promptly is the best chance you have of getting this under control and being able to keep it that way. In answer to your question, does it get better: NOT WITHOUT PROMPT, KNOWLEDGEABLE TREATMENT. Many of our doctors don't know that, so insist. Here's information about finding a qualified therapist near you:
http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Finding_a_Qualified_Lymphedema_Therapist.htmKeep us posted, please, and let us know how we can help.
Gentle hugs,
Binney -
Mandala, I'm no artist (don't I wish I could create beauty!), but there are some artists with lymphedema who post in this forum from time to time, so I hope we will hear from them. I can tell you that I've been able to return to every activity I hold dear, so yes, there's hope! One of my goals was to be able to pick up my grandkids until they're too big to want to be picked up--and I have been able to work, slowly but surely, to build strength following special precautions for those of us with LE, and I have no trouble lifting, picking up, tossing about and otherwise playing with the little ones. Like you, I had bilateral mx/diep, so I know that you're coming back from the recon surgery and its weight limitations, too. You'll get there!
The first step on the troubled arm is treatment, so if you haven't been working with a qualified therapist, do take Binney's advice and get help asap so you can get back to what you love. In the spirit of being totally honest, some women do have stubborn LE that they manage to reduce, but that does continue to make some activities difficult. But before you put yourself in that group, do whatever is needed to get the best treatment you can find. The very good news is that you are quite recently out of surgery. If you have LE, you've caught it at an early stage when you have the best chance of getting it under control and regaining your ability to lift a child and perform wonders with a paintbrush.
Wishing you the best!!

Wow thank you
!
I found a lymphedema therapist about 30 minutes from here (I'm on the Jersey Shore where it is difficult to find stuff like this anywhere)
...
It's tricky since I was dropped from my health insurance as of 1/31/13 because I couldn't afford the COBRA after my boss fired me because he "couldn't hold my position" any longer when I needed longer than 12 weeks post surgery to recover.(I was also in the middle of radiation- which I just finsihed up 2-5-13). It's a very long story - but what he did to me was legal and I cannot fight it.
I got axed from work and insurance.
So for 6 months I gotta pay for it all out of pocket in full and pray nothing bad happens.
Would anyone know what the ballpark cost is for a therapist visit? -
My LE therapist is an LMT (massage therapist) but LANA certified and well trained and she'll do sliding scale and charges between 75-100$ for a two hour session.
An official PT session will be billed to insurance at a higher rate, but often if it's self pay, they charge the discounted rate that they receive from insurance.
The first LE clinic I went to, charged a visit at close to $400/hour--and they were staffed by massage therapists (who can't collect from insurance, have to bill under a PT) and for some reason Blue Cross allowed the entire amount. Other hospital and community PT's seem to bill at around $250/visit and get half of that from insurance.
Speak to billing or look for a massage therapist--they can't participate with insurance--no insurance reimburses for LMT/RN/MD delivered LE services, so they'll likely work with you.
I found one of the posters a Vodder trainer, and she charged her a sliding scale.
By the way, I'm nearly 5 years into this journey, and it's in my dominant hand, and I'm not an artist, but work with my hands, and started a drawing class recently, and it's fine. But a few years ago, started work where I had to do a lot of writing and struggled for a while with swelling in the hand and wrist.

I forgot, a woman who used to post a fair amount, Moogie, is a very talented artist--I've had the good fortune to see her work--and she has bilateral LE and continued to create even when wrapped on both arms.
She is still making great art.

hi mandalab. I am an artist and I write and draw and paint and am a silversmith. I was trying so hard to get them to leave my lymph nodes, because i really did not want to deal with lymphedema. 25/30 were positive, so now i am dealing with it. I also remodeled houses for a living and worked at a museum building out the exhibits. cant do that anymore. luckily, it is not in my dominant left hand, but it is still a hassle and a half. I reallly hope you can find some help. LANA certified. I did look on youtube just to get a general idea of what the correct way to do it yourself is. You will get stronger, you will paint again.

Just know that in recent years, few therapists are taking the LANA test, so LANA is good, but if you find someone who is well qualified--135 hour course and subsequent clinical experience--and answers all your questions and seems like a good fit, that's an okay therapist to see.
LANA is undergoing some changes right now to try and get more therapists to take the test. They've actually lowered their standards: you don't have to wait a year after training anymore.
I think kathec's post is so "on target"--we have to give up some things--I gave up tennis, but we can, with mindfulness and some caution, continue to do what we love.

I am an artist.. An art teacher as well .. Still in chemo and haven't had surgery yet but these r definitely fears I think about.. Left breast left side left alnd to be had and i am a lefty .. Just left hoping it won't affect my art and my arm

shari- if it's any consolation- I am still very much able to draw and paint- My work is really detailed sometimes- the tiny lines and stuff can hurt- But I do not see a difference in quality- it just takes a little bit longer now.
This is a tiny part of a project I was working on for a friend's bands show poster:: no loss of detail.
I used to go on stage with bands and paint as they played music- I'm just worried I can't do that anymore. The long periods of time is what I want back
Thanks everyone- this helps me sleep better at night -
Thanks you so much.. I feel a ton better now.. One less worry! Super appreciate the feedback!
