Starting Chemo April 2009

Thanks for all the advice and words of wisdom. I'm sure I will have many more questions when I meet with the RO. I get about 5 -6 weeks to recover from chemo then to surgery. I'm praying that the turmors will have shrunk so much that there will be little to cut out. Prior to chemo this time, the surgeon thought I may have to lose my entire pectoral major muscle, thus rendering my left arm very limited in movement. Now, the largest tumor has gone from 2.1cm to 1.2 cm. I'm hoping there is even more shrinkage in 3 weeks.
-
Geri, good to hear from you. I hope that you are doing ok today, please keep us posted.
Amy, how are you holding up? Please come by when you can and let us know how you are doing.
Helen, it seems that things are under control at the moment, that is a relief to hear.
Florbo, sending love and we are all holding your hand on this journey with you.
Sending love and hugs to you all, Judy x

Florbo - I had radiation in 10/09. I used calendula gel and did not have any severe reactions. Not sure if that is why, but I guess it didn't hurt. Compared to chemo, radiation is pretty much NOTHING. I never noticed any fatigue or any other problems.
Judy - bleeding has stopped (finally). Am seeing doc tomorrow. No clue what she will say or what the u/s will show. Am feeling better but a bit anxious about tomorrow. Feel like I can't move on, make plans, go forward. I hate medical stuff. But I know you all understand that as well as I do.
Helen - GLAD you may be able to get into that neurosurgeon sooner, even if it takes a personal favor to make it happen. A year is TOO long to wait. Keep us updated.
-
Amy, glad the bleeding has stopped. I completely understand that you are anxious about the doc; just when we think we are moving ahead, something can come along and stop us in our tracks. But, this too shall pass and whatever the outcome, which we all hope will be nothing to worry about, we are all here and we have all got your back. I hope that is some comfort to you.
Hope you are all ok today. We have a National Holiday here today, Election Day! The sun is shining, we have been walking, have voted and now are getting ready to have a BBQ!
Sending you all hugs, Judy x
-
Hip x-ray just showed extensive arthritis - that I can live with! Amy - hope that you also have good news today...please let us know as we are all thinking of you.
Helen - glad to hear that your pain is under control and that you can see the neuro sooner than you expected.
Florbo - sounds like you are getting some good response to the chemo.
Have a good week all
Geri
-
Geri, good news on the arthritis. What will you do now to control the pain?
-
Saw the doctor. She is very smart and sassy - I like her (the ob/gyn). She said she didn't know exactly what the bleeding was from, but that we could wait 3 mo, do another u/s, and if the uterus was 'unremarkable,' then wait and repeat in 3 more months. If still fine, and no bleeding, we could just go forward. IF any bleeding before that, then definitely a D&C and we might need to discuss hysterectomy. We both agreed that we can't keep going on and on with D&Cs.
But this was the best outcome and the one I hoped for. Still a little nervous re the bleeding recurring, but trying to not obsess and just give it a few weeks and hopefully it won't happen again. And if it does, I'll deal with it - just like we all do with whatever comes.
At the end of the meeting I said that I just wanted her to understand that I really really didn't like this whole thing. And she said "Ok, I'll put that in your chart." And then we both laughed.
So there we are. Cleared for all activities. Going forward.
Geri - re the arthritis - would that glucosamine/chondroitin supplement maybe help? What about a gentle stretching/yoga routine? Not that it is a cure-all, but maybe it would provide some help.
Thank you all for the support. Words can't express what it means to me. But I know you all understand.
Amy
-
I am sighing a sigh of relief today having read your posts.
Geri, will you be taking meds for the pain?
Amy, happy that we are going forward...
Helen, how are you feeling?
Hugs to you all, Judy x
-
Amy what a roller coaster!!! Ihope they get you sorted out once and for all so you don't have to go through this sort of worry in the future. at this point I am sort of glad for BRCA and removal of female parts I definitely feel like they betrayed me, wink wink!!!
Hugs
Lesley -
As you said Amy, the best news you could have gotten. The gyn does sound nice, glad you like her...that's always a plus for us. We should be qualified at this point to give ratings on bedside manner!
As for my hip pain, now that I know what it is, and that it's just run of the mill arthritis, I will just try OTC ibuprofen and if that doesn't do the trick, I will give your suggestion of the glucosamine/chondroitin a try Amy.
I'm thankful that, for the most part, our health concerns have not been cancer related. We just have to concentrate on helping Florbo get through her treatments.
It's freeeeezing here in NY....was 3 degrees when I left for work this morning - I need sun and sand really bad!
Happy mid-week everyone
Geri -
Hi Ladies,
Geri--You're going to hate me for saying that it was 75F and sunny here in Dallas today. Stay warm up there. Are you able to do any water aerobics? I used to do deep water aerobics and several ladies there said their arthritis is better after they've done water aerobics.
Judy--I'm trying to work my way up in exercising. Thanks for posting because it keeps reminding to move when I don't feel like it.
Amy--Ugh! So sorry to hear about your bleeding. I don't know about your history, but is your medical team wanting to have you have your ovaries out? My doc want me to have mine out later this year. We thought I was in menopause until my recurrence. I had been on Tamoxifen and Lupron and had no periods for 3 years. Then with the recurrence and a period on Thanksgiving day, my medical team said that my ovaries were not in menopause. My labs were never in the right ranges because Tamoxifen and Lupron slightly altered the numbers while my ovaries were still secreting estrogen. So, I'll have to see later whether to have just the ovaries or do the whole package. I am 40 and have 2 wonderful boys, 7 and 10. I was a miserable pregnant woman and would not want another child unless I can "bud" one from my thigh or somewhere else.
Lesley--can you tell us which female parts you had to have removed?
I finally loaded an avatar for me. It is me doing my celebratory "pole dance." We didn't get to ring a bell when we finish chemo at my center. I did it, threw up, and fell asleep because of the meds. I didn't get a chance to collect tips.
-
Florbo in my sig line but double mastectomy and ovaries and Fallopian tubes at 41 years old super fun - not : )
-
Geri, it is such a relief that our current issues are not cancer related, I totally agree with you there. Hope the pain meds help you
!
Florbo, hope you are feeling ok and building up your strength. I am BRCA 1 and had my ovaries and fallopian tubes out a year before my diagnosis. I was menopausal at 38. The following year I had a double mastectomy after my diagnosis, before chemo. I turned 40 during chemo.
I am going to see my Mum today for a couple of days in London, just going on my own to spend some time with her; she is finding it difficult to fill her days since my grandmother passed away. It is very very cold there, not looking forward to that, but I am sure it will be nice to be with the family. I am looking forward to a couple of days away.
Amy, Helen, hope you are both doing ok. Sending you all hugs and love, Judy x
-
Yes, Judy, the cold really gets into your bones. I find only a long hot shower really warms me up. I do that at the end of the day before bed, and sleep well. A cup of tea helps, too. I find that if I keep a warm scarf around my neck, the rest of me stays warmer. But I do have a little heater under my desk that I run ALL DAY to keep my feet/legs warm. Stay warm in London and enjoy the time with your mom. I am sure you will be a comfort to her.
My younger daughter just flew back from a vacation in Hawaii today. She flew into NYC - said she was a little afraid to go out of the airport. The cold was a shock.
I worked out with a new trainer today. It was a very positive experience. It made me feel strong and positive and like I am a bit more able to leave the whole bleeding experience in the past.
Re the hormones - I went into menopause at time of chemo (51) - was not there at all yet. But subsequent hormone tests after all the treatment showed that I am fully there now.
-
Amy, really pleased that the new trainer was a positive experience, good that you are slowly moving forward.
Has been so quiet here since I left! Hope you are all ok...
London was nice, very cold indeed! But good to see the family and be a daughter for a few days, I needed to re charge my batteries LOL!
Geri, Helen, Florbo, Lesley, how are you all feeling?
I had a chest ultrasound today, all clear thankfully! The doctor spent so long doing it, I was convinced that she had seen something! So much went through my mind in those few minutes, unbelievable!
Back to work tomorrow, sending everyone hugs, Judy x
-
Judy--good to hear that you had a nice visit with your mom and London. I LOVE London! Hubby and I went there for our 10 year anniversary. He had never wanted to cross the pond. When we got there, he told me that he couldnt believe he held out for so long. I can't wait to take my kids when they are older and do a "castles tour." Glad to hear that your chest ultrasound was clear. I hate it when we get "scanxiety" for all the follow-up appointments.
I went to see the breast surgeon last Thursday and she could not feel the largest tumor! She did briefly do an ultrasound and saw that the main tumor and its 2 friends are a lot smaller than a few months ago. We are going to wait until 2/7 for my ultrasound with my radiologist to see the status of the tumors. This will be 3 weeks after the last chemo. So hopefully we will see even more shrinkage. At that time, the medical team to talk about what needs to be done. The BS said maybe I don't need surgery and just go to radiation. However, I'm thinking, how can you tell if it is left over scar tissue or the tumor? I don't care how small it may be, if there is something there, I want it out! In the meantime, I'm resting and recovering.
I did 30 minutes on the treadmill on Saturday and then had to take a 2 hour nap. I'm thankful my parents are here helping with the kids so I was able to do that. I also went to a vegan baking class because I'm overhauling my diet even more. I'm not a baker because I don't like all the sugar and butter in all the baked goods. However, I have been afraid to do anything. The class at Whole Foods, was more of a demo class with lots of QandA. Now, the vegan baking doesn't seem so daunting. I've also been juicing and doing smoothies trying to detox my body.
I hope everyone is well.

Florbo,
I went to my GYN onc today and pulled out my diary of appointments. I had notes about using aquaphor (slimy but it worked) during radiation then have notes about using Lansinoh after radiation was completed. I recall from the Rads board many used aloe products. While going through rads it was pretty easy as Lesley indicated. My hardest parts were the boosts. By the time that rolled around my tissue began turning black, I couldn't feel it, it just looked bad. It sort of scabbed up and when the scabs fell off so did the surgery scars. Now when new doctors look at me they always ask if my port scar is where I had surgery. The rads burnt my scars right off my body. Sorry to hear you are facing another round of treatments. Cancer SUCKS.
At my onc appt. today I asked about my potassium blood work. I guess there was a mix up and my BC onc ordered a CBC instead of a potassium panel. So I had to repeat the test. Aarggh.
Helen, sorry to hear you are in such pain. Sending a big {{HUG}}.
It's late. I will try to come back this weekend when I have more time to write.
Betsy

Florbo, good to hear that you are resting and recovering slowly...also good that the tumours are getting smaller. It sounds like you are doing everything that you can to get your body back on track. Remember, these things take time, be kind to yourself too
.
Betsy, nice to hear from you too!
So, I came back to work today and am just drowning in the back log, so not much time to write...hope you are all doing ok, Helen, Amy, Geri, how are you all feeling today?
Sending hugs to you all, have a good day, Judy x
-
Hi ladies, hope all is well with everyone.
Wish you all a great weekend! Can you believe it is February today???
Big hugs to you all, Judy x
-
Ladies, really hope you are all ok and just busy with day to day life.
I had a nice weekend, lots of quality time with the kids in our pjs - can't beat that
!
I am still trying to move my surgery, but no luck yet, so still scheduled for June, not so happy about that...
Really hope you are all ok, sending big hugs, Judy x

Hi all
Just a quick note to let Judy know I'm ok (so nice that you worry about us Judy). I had my oral surgery on Friday and they extracted 3 teeth and put bone grafts in to prepare for implants in the future. Just one more "part" of my body that will not be my own. I am in a considerable amount of pain, so I am going to take my Lortab and go to bed. Hope everyone is ok
Geri -
Geri, that sounds painful. Judy, thanks for always thinking of us. I see neurosurgeon on Friday. All the kids are doing well. I'm tired so going to sleep now.
-
Geri and Helen, thanks for coming by. I do worry about you all, just my way, I think.
Geri, sounds painful, hope you feel a bit better on Monday. And you can't even eat to cheer yourself up LOL! Unless you can have ice cream
!
Helen, glad the kids are doing well. Let us know how it goes on Friday.
Hope all our other ladies are doing ok and sending you all hugs, Judy x
-
I went to Philadelphia on Friday to see my daughters. Spent Fri night with the younger one, doing a whole strategizing session about her job/career. Saturday went with the pregnant one and her husband to Babies R Us on a scouting mission. OMG have things changed. What an education. But a very successful trip overall. I am meeting her this coming weekend for a strategizing session on HER job/career options re motherhood. Yikes this stuff is draining, but nice to know they need mom and want/respect my input.
I leave for Dallas tomorrow thru Friday for a big work convention. Had to go buy new clothes for the trip. When you work at home, your wardrobe just DISAPPEARS over time. It was somewhat of a shock trying on clothes - needed larger sizing and had that noticeable roll around the middle. I had some bad moments in the fitting room but I perservered until I found enough to buy. Luckily styles seem VERY forgiving now - lots of disguising the waist area. But it was still pretty upsetting.
It is a luxury to be able to fret/worry about other things than cancer. I fully realize that and appreciate how far I've come - in that is where I am now.
BUT STILL!!Won't be around until the weekend, since travelling. But sending love to you all. FEEL BETTER GERI. Your teeth will look beautiful when this is all over. My best friend is a dental hygienist and she is always saying how much they can do these day to improve dental health and appearance.
-
Amy good to hear from you! Sounds like you had a good time with your daughters. I agree, it is nice to know that they still value our opinions. I have two teenage girls, so it comes and goes. Sometimes, I "know nothing" and sometimes, they come to me and I love that. I hope your daughter is feeling well.
Hope you enjoy the convention, travel safely. Geri, how are you feeling today?
I am having the most stressful day at work here, so back in I go...
Hugs to you all, Judy x
-
Sorry for the absence we had a
death in the family and I had to travel unexpectedly so it was a bit of chaos.
Geri oh my goodness that sounds painful! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
Judy you are so wonderful to look out for everyone!
Helen best of luck with the Neurosurgeon, keep us posted.
Amy I hear you on the fitting room blues! Safe travels!
Starting to feel like myself again which is nice! Have a great week! -
Betsy--thanks for all the rad tips. Radiation stil seems so far away for me. I just want to get it done now and move on.
Geri--how are you feeling? Are you still in a lot of pain?
Amy--have a great time at the convention. I'm in Dallas if you need something--like Spanx which I have plenty of
No, seriously, let me know if you need something.
Judy--deep breaths. Try to de-stress and I hope your work days will get better.
Hubby, boys, and I went to a cabin in the woods for the weekend. It was great to hike some easy trails at a state park, go fishing, soak in the hot tub, and gaze at the stars. There was no wifi there, so plenty of family time. Kids and I played several card games and stayed up way too late.
-
Lesley, so sorry for your loss.
I like the term "fitting room blues". Unfortunately, I am also having this problem. Some days, I just say "this is what it is, so deal with it", but sometimes it upsets me too. Really happy that you are starting to feel like yourself again. I must admit that I have started lying awake at night now worrying about the recovery from the surgery. I know it will be worth it though.
Florbo, your weekend sounds wonderful - like the kind of family time we had when growing up. Oh, I am all for technology etc, but sometimes, it is nice to get away from it too.
I do try and take deep breaths, but it has been a particularly stressful week, both at work and home, so much going on all the time. We all seem to have such busy schedules; I think I need some down time, but not sure that will happen.
Geri, how are you feeling? Helen, good luck for Friday.
Sending you all hugs, Judy x
-
Good luck for today Helen!
Hope everyone is doing and feeling ok.
Have a great weekend! Hugs, Judy x
-
Hi everyone. Hope you are doing ok despite the setbacks some have endured. I saw neurosurgeon and he recommends surgery. Date is Wednesday, April 3. It's a 2 hour procedure and I should be home by the Friday. Recovery is to walk as much as I can. I forget the actual name of the procedure but he said it's a pretty standard procedure these days. So I will go ahead with it.
