high risk and scared
Good morning. I can't sleep so i figured i could talk to someone. I have a painful lump behind my nipple. I just had a mammogram and sonogram and was told immediately that i needed a biopsy. My doctor never shared with me the mammogram results. Can the results say u have cancer without a biopsy. My maternal grandmother died from breast cancer and her sister as well. Help

Hi kcook,
Can't sleep either. They cannot diagnose you without testing it first, but what they do is give you a birad number. I just had my mammo and it was given a birad 4 by the radiologist which just means, it's suspicious and they want to test it. 3 is a density, they'll keep an eye on it with maybe 3-6 month follow ups, 5 is highly suspicious. 6 is definitely ca and they won't give you that unless it's already been tested and confirmed as cancer. 2 is regular irregularities that are no cause for concern.
If you're worried, and felt you were not given a proper explanation, I'd call your doctors office. Maybe ask them for your birad rating...But please don't dx yourself until you've gotten your biopsy results back...
And I know it's hard because I'm going thru a similar thing... It's hard not to think the worst... Good luck to you in keeping calm and for benign results! -
Thank you yell1724. I have been stressed out ever since i did the mammo and sono. The sonogram tech left the room in the middle of performing the sonogram. She said she went to look at my last sonogram. My dr. Called the next day telling me i needed a biopsy. The urgency has scared me so much. I have a ten yr. Old and i can't leave her behind.

I think they generally try to get news to you right away when dealing with anything breast related. My radiologist told me right in the office that I needed 2 biopsies(one on each side). It's scary, and when you have kids, of course you're thinking about them... But don't go down that road yet! I have two, 9 and 6. You have to stay positive, and strong for them:) and eventually it'll rub off on you a little:)

Agree with Yell...dont panic yet. I tried to read my tech's face too but then decide just to flat out ask her...she was positive it was nothing; the radiologist said it was cancer. Biopsy was scheduled. Cancer confirmed the next day. Techs are bombarded with questions for obvious reasons. We are and were all scared so anyone who could tip the scales our way is a plus. There is no way any of us can advise you to calm down and think you will. I can speak for myself...outwardly I was calm; internally I was a basket case. I was braced for the worst and kind of knew anyway. Just remember even if it is it isnt the death sentence anymore. You just play the hand you are dealt. I didnt take my husband with me when I had the biopsy. They dont tell you right then anyway. If it turns out to be BC rely on friends and family. They, and us, will be your support team. Good luck. Let us know. Diane

For sure they do not know if you have cancer until pathology sees the tissue, so right now no one knows your results.
Don't read much into the Doctor's voice. Some are natural worry warts and always sound serious. Others are almost too calm and happy even in the worst case.
Plus they are often wrong. I have seen many, many times where the radiologist was just about "sure" the patient had cancer only to be totally contradicted on pathology. Other times they have been very assured the finding would be benign, only to be surprised the other way.
Bottom line, nothing is known til it's in the lab on a slide. The answers will come to you, try and be as good to yourself as you can while you endure the wait, which is hard on all of us, for sure.

I agree with you Beacon. They are wrong sometimes for sure. I had the "cheerful" radiologist who told me even though I had a Birads 4, she was just being cautious and that it was a 4-A and almost a 3 with another 6 months of watch and wait. She decided to err on the side of caution she said.
She also said that my microcalcs were "Round and punctuate" and that she felt the chances of b-9 were around 90-95%. She said this after my stereotactic biopsy as well after looking at the tissue and the "after biopsy mammo" I guess she was surprised by my path report too! But, I guess that is why she decided to biopsy as she knew there was a small chance. I fell into that side unfortunately.

Thank you Yell, Edwards, Beacon and April for taking the time out to give me some kind words. Im so worried. I have been having horrible headaches for along time. Im hoping that this wasn't the cause. I noticed my right breast started looking quite a bit larger than the left and the coloring started to get lighter. I was 3 months late doing the mammo but the pain is what sent me in.

Can i ask you guys if your lump was painful when it was found

Can i ask you guys if your lump when painful when it was found

I did not have a "lump" but microcalcifications in a cluster. I did have some pain but many people do not. It can be anything from BC to benign, pain or no pain. There is no "normal" in this regard. Sometimes old information says BC never hurts. That is not true. It can but it often doesn't and sometimes B-9 conditions like fibroids hurt even more than true BC. So the long and short of it is that you cannot go by pain. Just get it checked and that is your best way to know what is going on in there.
Best of luck! We are here!!!

I couldn't find a lump, but I had pain. On the one side. On the other I had no pain at all. They found masses on each that needed to be biopsied.
