Scar tissue look like cancer on ultrasound?
I posted about 4 weeks ago because I had a fibroadenoma removed because it had over doubled in size in 6 month time period. Excisional biopsy came back benign (fibroadenoma). I went back to surgeon today due to pain and he sent me for ultrasound. this was not the same place that did my first imaging..so they didn't have any info on me. I explained that I just had surgery 4 weeks prior. The tech was very concerned with what she was seeing. She went to get radiologist. He came into my room 3 times and said I just don't know if what we're seeing is from your surgery or something new. Is this a typical finding a month after surgery? Can scar tissue look so daunting on ultrasound? Typically, You don't have an ultrasound 1 month after excisional biopsy but due to pain they did it early. Sorry so long. I feel more anxious about this than a month ago.
Thanks for any help it info.

Michelle,
Hello and welcome.
Yes, scar tissue can look "suspicious" on imaging.
What did the radiologist recommend?
-
Hello Michelle,
Oh yes, it can. I had ultra sound three weeks after surgery and it was found to be a fat necrosis, around the site of the surgical scar. Fat necrosis and scar tissue which is what is left behind after the cells die and form oil cysts, mimics carcinoma vividly.
So like Marie, I ask the same, what did the radiologist recommend?
-
He told me to come back in 1 month for ultrasound.
-
Right, then I would take that to mean he is actively surveilling you and that is good. I had a cyst drained which is what happened with my fat necrosis, it could be something as simple as that, which can be quite painful and is notorious for mimicking a malignancy because the edges are so irregular.
Whatever it is, try not to worry, I was terrified when I found a new lump two weeks after surgery, it felt huge. The surgery had caused trauma to my breast and it was the same as you, a removal of a fibroadenoma. While the surgery is quick, my body hated being invaded and this was the reaction.
Hugs Michelle, rest up for a month, and come back and let us know how you got on!

Scar tissue can look so much like cancer that they thought my cancer was scar tissue. As you've had surgery (I hadn't) it probably is scar tissue, but they are wise to watch it carefully.

I have had a lump under my skin that seemed to develope after my diep surgery. I had an ultrasound today. I showed up suspicious. Tomorrow I have a biopsy. It seems to be large, with a blood supply.
I do not want to be but I am worried.
Robin -
Robin, I am headed to my surgeon tomorrow to have a look see at suspicious breast changes, wishing the best for both of us.
Lori -
Lori, Thank you for your kindness. I wish you well too. ((((hugs))))). God bless. Thanks for the reply too. Was starting to feel alone tonight. Alaska, must be beautiful.
Robin -
Robin, it's cold and dark right now. Where is Roy? I will have to look it up.
How was your biopsy? I am going in to hopefully have one tomorrow-if that doesn't work I have to have a surgical biopsy.
((Hugs)) 2 u too -
I had a biopsy that had to be stopped due to bleeding and I developed a hematoma. When I had my next biopsy 5 weeks later, my results came back B9 necrosis. Now I am being sent to a breast surgeon because not sure if findings are necrosis from first biopsy as I have had no other surgery or trauma to my breast-and did the correct spot get biopsied? Thought it was over and now it starts again....
-
I'm going through this too. New suspicious lump. Ultrasound Monday. -
So if they are telling me it's just scar tissue from mammogram and ultrasound review would second opinion be advised since I've never had a biopsy or trauma in this breast?
-
Yes, or You could call the doctors and ask them what it could be since you have had no problem with that breast before. Something doesn't sound right, was this your first ever mammogram.
-
Are they saying scar tissue or radial scar
-
I am in one of these situations where the 3D screening mammogram of my left breast where I originally had breast cancer was suspicious. Followup diagnostic mammography and ultrasound also suspicious. My oncologist who is highly experienced does not think it is cancer. He ordered a breast MRI before just automatically having me proceed to a core biopsy. That came out "highly suspicious for malignancy." The oncologist still thinks it is not cancer but possibly fatty necrosis. The suspicious area is adjacent to the original surgery lumpectomy scar from almost five years ago. There has been no trauma recently so wondering why something new would appear in that area.
I am not keen about having a core biopsy--would rather have a single needle biopsy or watchful waiting. Has anyone been in a similar situation?
-
To GranM--
Was it the core biopsy that caused all the bleeding and a hemotoma?
-
Yogalady, If you look at the date, this is an older thread. Im not sure if GranM is even around anymore? If she is (you can check by looking at her profile), you can send her a PM and ask your question
Welcome to BCO

Yogalady- what ended up happening? I'm in a similar situation right now. Imaging could go either way so I'm getting a biopsy. This is of course, after having breast cancer twice. Once in 2010, then got a double mastectomy and tram flap reconstruction. Then 4 years later, a new primary formed in the other breast. So I'm breaking all the rules here

I had my mammogram 8 months after radiation ended. (Stage 1A Grade 3 HER+) I went to my radiologist/oncologist a week later and he told me that my breast was pink and warm to the touch (The mammogram was normal by the way). He put me on Keflex 250 mg. 4 x daily. It didn't work. I saw my surgeon who put me on Keflex 500 mg. 3 x per day - it didn't work. My breast swelling goes down when I lie in bed at night and it gets cooler. Surgeon tried needle aspiration (5 times) in the office. Didn't get anything out. Sent a sample for a culture which came back negative. I saw my oncologist and he prescribed Levaquin (500 mg 1 x per day). That didn't work. Had an ultrasound that showed I had a cyst or abscess on the lumpectomy scar (7 cm). This all happened after the mammogram. Now my surgeon wants to do a biopsy of my breast skin and a core biopsy of the "cyst". If it's a cyst, why would they do a core biopsy? I had played this waiting game last year when I got breast cancer and now it's the same thing over again. I'm waiting for them to set up the biopsy appointment now. I just keep wondering when this nightmare is going to end. Asked my surgeon if the mammogram caused this and he said it was just a coincidence. (My oncologist seemed to think there were germs on the mammogram machine). I am a complete emotional wreck over this. They have the diagnosis as cellulitis and another doctor called it a seroma. Am not taking antibiotics for now. The surgeon wanted to use general anesthesia for the biopsy and I told him absolutely not. I did the first biopsy without it. He claimed that I had anxiety. He's now going to give me a form of "twilight" sleep while doing the procedure. They've got me on Xanax and I'm still a nervous wreck. Has anyone had this happen to them a year after their surgery? Of course I can't get any answers from anyone and have to Google everything (which is not good either).
