I'd like to purchase some make-up:  a light foundation, blush, eyeliner and pencil for the eyebrows.  I'd like to go to a cosmetics counter and have someone apply the make-up for me, so I can see the colors and know they go well with my complexion.

Right now, I don't wear foundation or blush.  Occasionally, I'll use eyeliner and mascara.  Every day I use lip gloss and fill in my eyebrows with pencil.

I'd like to know which brands of make-up I should look at that don't have all the nasty ingredients that we don't need.  If I went into a place like Macy's, or similar department store, which make-up counter should I chose?  I'd also like a brand that doesnt' charge astronomical prices.

Do you have a Sephora near you?  They sell all brands.  They are very extremely helpful and would be able to recommend the natural products.   Good luck!  Angie

I sell Mary Kay (as a side business) & while I don't know enough about the ingredients today (I'm doing some research while in post-op recovery).

I've always liked MK products (I'm 42) and a local lady will come to your home which is nice and private. Just something to think about. You can check out the full product line at www.marykay.com

Good luck and have fun. Getting a makeover is nice and relaxing.

carolina, I've done a little searching online, and it appears that Sephora offers quite a few of the kinds of products I'm looking for, paraben free, ect.  There are several Sephora's inside of JCPenneys that are within reasonable driving distance to me.  I think I will treat myself soon by going to one of them and having a make-up make-over.

Shadytrake, I've had many people recommend MK products to me.  There's a local woman who sells it in the town I live.  I haven't heard much about their product ingredients, but will check it out.  I do like the idea of someone coming into the home, it's a nice, personal way to check their stuff out.

divine - use that skindeep website to check cosmetics, but I like Tarte, Josie Maran, Bare Minerals and Korres for their non-nasty ingredients.  You should be able to try those at Sephora.

Philosophy brand mineral powder doesn't have any bad stuff in it.  Bert's bees tinted lip gloss is wonderful and also safe.  I go to my natural foods store and shop their cosmetic aisle for everything else.

SpecialK, I use the skindeep website quite often these days, love it.

claire, I also use Burt's Bees for my lips, tinted lip shimmer for color with their lip gloss over top for shine. It's my favorite lip stuff I've ever used.

Some bigger malls have Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals stores. I think you will also want to find a mall with a separate Sephora store if possible because the selection is bigger than at most JCPenneys. I would steer clear of Macy's. Most of the stuff there, if not all, will have ingredients we want to avoid. Most of my makeup now is from Bare Minerals except for Burt Bee's for the lips. Can't beat it.

divine - glad you like the website - it is pretty awesome.  I like Korres mascara and the volume building one from Bare Minerals.  Depending on how moist your skin is I also like the Bare Minerals mineral foundation and Josie Maran's all-in-one powder foundation, but if your skin is dry neither of those work well.  Tarte has a nice foundation and I like their cream blush, good for "mature" skin and I tend to be on the dry side.  They also have a gel liner that comes in a little pot with a nice brush but it can take some getting used to as far as ease of application.  If you buy it use it every day, if you leave it sitting around it will dry out and not be usable - I learned this lesson!  I use Anastasia colored brow gel - not sure on the ingredients but it does what I want it to do so I have kept using it - it is like brow mascara - I have brows they are just too light so they don't show up.

SpecialK, thank for reminding meof Korres. It is local, after all, and I already use their perfume and lipgloss.

One problem I have run into with "natural" creams and cosmetics is that they tend to be loaded with various herbs. My mother sent me, for example, a skin-healing balm from her local healthfood store. It was really nice, but when I checked the herbal extracts in it, every single one was estrogonic. Since my cancer is 100% ER+, I am nervous about those creams.

mary, that makes sense about the Sephoras in the JC Penneys being smaller.  I think those are the only ones close to me tho, no Sephora stores on their own.  And are all BareEscuntials products paraben free, ect.?  I don't know much about their cosmetics but have been hearing more about them.  There are several places near Pittsburgh that sell their products, maybe I should check them out.

SpecialK, is that Tarte brand a whole line of cosmetics?  I've seen a few of their products on Ulta.com.  What about the make up counters at Ulta?  Do they have cosmetic lines there where I could purchase paraben free makeup?

Momine, you make a good point, but I'm not sure I would know which herbs are estrogenic.  Can you provide any info on it, or a link to look that explains what to look for?

Divine, I go by that web-based foods list, it has herbs too, or else I simply put the name of the herb in google along with "estrogen" and boom. Problem is that most of the herbs that are good for your skin have some kind of estrogonic action, as far as I can tell.

Problem is that by the time I go to the store, I can't remember, lol, which herbs are OK. I should probably work it backwards and look at a couple of creams that look nice, write it all down, research, then buy.

Again, I really wish more proper research would be done on phytoestrogens, because nobody actually seems to know how careful we are supposed to be with this.

divine - I shop at both Sephora (we have the JCP one and a couple of stand alone stores near me) and also at Ulta.  There are definitely makeup artists at Sephora but the Ulta near me doesn't really have them.  There are also Bare Escentuals stores in malls - there is one in every mall here with makeup artists that will demo on you.  Tarte is a whole line of cosmetics, as is Korres but it is harder to find - I can find the skin care more easily.  You asked about Bare Minerals - mineral based foundations and cosmetics are generally safe because they are natural, but natural things can be not so good - as in estrogenic plants as momine mentioned.  I look at skindeep and the best rated foundations seem to be mineral based, so that may be something to try.  They sell it at both Ulta and Sephora, and in their own stores.

Bare Escentuals has older products that have parabens in them. I learned this when they tried to sell me a product that makes eyeliner waterproof. It's best to check everything for its ingredients.

Does anyone have any information about the new makeup line Drew Berrymore has called Flower?  I saw her on a talk show and she mentioned that it was made with natural products.  Just curious.... I know it is sold at Wal-Mart so thought it might be more affordable.

    Thanks

The Macy's here has an Orgins counter and I think they are pretty natural. I got the blush and foundation and I am happy with them. They didn't irritate my skin at all. I plan to go back for eye shadow and liner. I also just bought Covergirl's natural line of mascara. Don't know how natural it is, but it was on sale at target and I figured I'd give it a try. I like it.

Question- does everyone stay away from Parabens?  It is in my moisterizer and I still use it.  Is a little bit, ok?

I sell Arbonne and their cosmetics and skin care are paraben free and phthalate free. Those are the two things u need to stay away from because they affect the estrogen and progesterone in your body. The Arbonne products really work and although they are expensive you use very little because they have no fillers. I became a consultant once I was diagnosed because they use natural ingredients, no petroleum and no artificial colors, scents, etc. I signed up because the products are safe, they work, and I needed the 35% discount!

My DIL sold Arbonne for awhile. I love their products! Best therapy is the Soulmate pampermint foot cream and the Pampermint foot scrub.

Definitely my choice for an evening of aromatherapy.

Did not realize these were on the OK to use list.

Thank you for the info! I think I will make a cake for DH in exchange for a foot massage.

It is amazing the products we use on a daily basis that contain parabens!

I haven't gotten around to purchasing paraben free cosmetics yet altho I did by paraben free moisturizer.

Today, I bought the following paraben free products from Walgreens:  liquid hand soap, hand cream, shampoo, conditioner and hair gel.

They are different brands, and I checked out the ingredient/toxicity information at Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database | Environmental Working Group.  All the products I bought have a hazard score of 4 our less (out of a possible 10) and all scored 0 for cancer causing ingredients.

I still want to purchase some less toxic deodorant/antiperspirant, hair spray, and hair wax or clay.  Sheesh.  It's surprising to realize all the stuff we 'apply' to ourselves!

My hairdressor has just turned me on to color revolution. I brought a couple of eyeshadows home. I went to there website, but it doesnt list the ingrediants there. But here is list from the eyeshadow. Mica, iron oxides, titanium dioxide, organic honey extract. Thats all. She showed me how you can take a clear nail polish and dip it into the mineral color to make nail polish. It was pretty amazing

    Hi everyone,

I have been using Aveda moisterizer for my face.  I really like it a little expensive, but nice.  I am trying to find a nice eye cream, any suggestions.

They have two different types of night cream. One is anti aging and one is more of a fresh feeling. They also have great day creams. One is anti aging and the other one is a fresh feeling. I use both types and they both look great. If you go on Arbonne.com they list the ingredients for all of their products. I am a consultant for Arbonne and sell the products. I signed up to be a consultant once I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I did a lot of research on skin care and cosmetics and arbonne's products are pretty good. And they work great too!!

Divine, idk if you use face powder but I recently made my own and I and my mom and sister love it! All it is is Bobs Redmill Arrowroot flour and cocoa powder. About 6 parts flour to one part cocoa and then adjust for your coloring. I can't believe how well it works! I also have been making my own lip balm using the same ingredients as buts bees. If you do a goole dearch for diy makeup there are lots of recipes out there for making things from natural ingredients. Of course not everyone wants to make their own stuff but I like it because I love making things! And my lip balm is even better than burts if I do say so!

Colorescience for makeup ...it's expensive but lasts a long time. I love My Favorite Eyes Cream.

Hylunia for skin care. Both are expensive but you use less so they last longer.

Estée Lauder double wear foundation has no parabens. What I do is, look on line at Estée Lauder and Lancôme and find what I like and then call customer service and they will tell you the ingredients. Clinique moisture surge and all about eyes have no parabens either, that is what they told me. But, dramatically different moisturizer does have parabens. I threw mine out!

I thought it was almost like a right of passage to research all my makeup at http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/, then throw out all the crappy, (including my Mary Kay.. sorry!)  and purchase the healthy new makeup. But here's curious. I purchased my new makeup from a natural food market. Now, as a result of finding this post, I did a little further research on the Gabriel products and they are not all as great as I thought. Hmmph. So... off to learn more!
