ILC Symptoms

Hi there -

I am 35 years-old and recently had a baby (she's 6 months now). I have been having slight swelling (not noticable on sight to anyone but me) and achey pain in my left breast and underarm for a little over a month. I quit nursing over three months ago. Since my mother was diagnosed with ILC last year, I was immediately proactive and scheduled a mammogram which came back normal. I am going in for an ultrasound tomorrow. Given that genetic counseling shows my having a 28% lifetime BC risk, my OB/GYN is pushing my insurance company to also give me an MRI.

I guess my question is did you have any symptoms before being diagnosed with ILC and what screening tool (mammo, US, MRI, biopsy) caught it?

Thanks so much, all. These boards are wonderful

well my breast felt different, i guess maybe a mild thickening but I have really lumpy breasts, it looked off or different, cant really explain what, maybe the nipple . Mammo and ultra sound missed it 9mnths prior but ultra sound and mri picked up the big one. Hopefully it is a blocked milk duct or something like that but I agree with family history its better to be careful. Hope everything ends up being clear.

my mom just dx with ILC, but approx 5yrs ago her nipple began to invert... she was very concerned, but is not very good self advocate. she gets mam done each yr, and today learned from surgeon that he could just make out the tumor right under her nipple-----

    in the 2009 mam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :(

anyhow, she had mam, then us, then us guided needle biopsy. ILC is sneaky i've read, and sneaky is the word the surgeon stated as well....

sounds like you are doing the right thing and i'm glad you are pushing mri and so is your dr! i also hope it just a blocked duct or something of the sort, i know i had same but r/t mastitis....

congrats on your new baby :)

Chasing, it would be helpful if you added "My Mom's Diagnosis" to your signature line. It starts getting confusing to other posters when they see this. Until I went back & read your other posts i thought both your mother & you had cancer.

As I look back on my life before diagnosis I can remember that I felt fatigued or weak. It could have been a virus or sinus infection or it could have been a symptom. I dont know. However, in June I had a pain in my breast and I rubbed it and felt a lump. I had just had a normal mammo 6 months earlier. I also had fibrocystic breasts so I thought that I mustve had too much caffeine recently. I was on vacation so when I went back to work I showed some of my coworkers who are also my close friends and they immediately sent me to the breast center. I work in radiology so I had connections. The mammo didnt show it. They could see something on ultrasound and did a bx that day. When the results came back I had a mri which showed a 5.something cm mass. None of the other test showed the lymphnodes which were positive.  Hope this info helps and praying for good negative results for you. Hraling hugs.

MRI is the gold standard to find lobular - the symptoms you describe were some of mine also but I hope it is something like blocked milk ducts in your case.......

    Hi,

I had no symptoms at all. BC found on my yearly routine mammogram. Couldn't see it or feel it, nothing. MRI found second .9mm tumor.

    Shock is not the word!

But you are doing the rigt thing to check this out. I had lots of breast pain that lingered after pregnancy/nursing. Hopefully that's all this is.

    Good luck!

OMG - melmcbee my story is almost identical to yours, except I was diagnosed about a month after you.  August 3.  Nipple retraction was what I first noticed.  Even the Dr. thought I'd had too much caffeine but in an abundance of caution sent me for another mamm (I'd had a clean mamm in March).  Mamm showed nothing, but ultrasound picked it up.  I tell all my girlfriends to really watch for the visual signs!

Blocked milk ducts is my prayer for you floraD!
