Pattzsy, it sounds like your official dx is IDC and not DCIS? If they found invasive, that's more than DCIS, no? Ask for the oncotype dx on that tumor to determine whether or not you really need chemo. Also, feel free to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion before doing anything.
-
Pattszy~ I'm sorry to hear that you may need more treatment. Please find out more about your pathology report and like crescent5 said, at least another opinnion. You could have DCIS-MI (DCIS with microinvasion) or IDS, but generally DCIS is not invesive and is a stage 0. Did they take sentinal nodes? Were they clear? I'm keeping you in my thoughts until you get the answers you need!

hi crescent5 and tami,
yup i dont know what to think.. yup all my nodes are clear she added up some additional test just to make sure thanks for the advise i will surely follow them would seek 2nd or 3rd opinion before doing anything. thanks thanks! -
Hello ladies I am a big fan of forum boards for travel and such and just came across this!! I had my surgery Jan 8th, Both breast removed and tissue expanders placed. My pathology report was very disapointing. Although my stage of cancer is only between and one and two I have to have CHemo, Radiation, and Her2 treatments for a year. My biopsy in Nov showed lots of pre cancer and also some invasive cancer under my armpit. So after surgery I was told they did find a small invasive tumor in the breast, a very large area of pre cancer, this is why I have to do radiation, and although the surgeon removed a good amount of fat pad under my armpit he did NOT get ANY lymph nodes out to test at all, including the one that tested positive for cancer. His explanation was he thought for sure the node that tested postive in the biopsy would be in the area he took, but it wasnt. HE said he could take me back into surgery or we could just start Chemo My oncologist said we should just start Chemo as the Chemo would kill that off anyway.. It really sacares me to think I am still walking around with cancer though. I am going in today to have a Port as I cant imagine being stuck for an entire year!! Tomorrow a heart test and then Friday Chemo starts. I am still pretty sore and cant lift my arms above my head or reach for something high in the kitchen. Im really worried about going back to work I am a hairstylist and hope this tightness and pain gets better in a few weeks. I dont know how I will be able to work like this. Also worried about how the Chemo will make me feel. Lots of worries still even though my surgery is over. I have been doing lots of resting, maybe too much? Maybe I need to be doing more? Hoping I am feeling much better in a few weeks to go back to work and praying I dont get sick from Chemo........

Question ladies. I have an area on my right side that feels like I have a small rock under my skin. Has anyone else noticed anything like this. I did not have the immediate recon so do not know if I should be alarmed.
-
Hi girls! I had my bmx w/ TE's on Jan. 8th. Went home with 5 drains and still have 2. I can't believe I still have them since it's been 3 weeks, but I am hoping that they will come out today or maybe Wednesday. So my question is what are you doing for exercise? I have been doing my arm stretches, like instructed by a PT, but laying around the house so much can't be good. I just don't want to do anything that could cause damage to my incisions or whatever's going on in there! I'd love to go for walks, but it's freezing here and I don't know if pushing the stroller would be ok. I'm thinking no. I can't drive yet, so going to the gym is out. What are you creative ladies doing to get a little movement in your days?
-
Ok I don't want to sound like a know it all or that I'm questioning anyone's drs, but I'm questioning anyway.
Pattzsy, please run to a 2nd opinion. Make the calls TODAY. Any BS who takes out 36 perfectly good nodes needs to have his/her work checked. This dr may be wonderful, and I'm just a patient. But it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense given the rest of your post.
tangles I have to question your drs too. Maybe they're fabulous, and I'm the numb one, but why on earth would they shoot a bunch of chemo into someone who may not need it instead of just going in and getting the nodes?! 2nd opinion is in order IMO.
robinlee76 It hurts like there's a small rock or you're feeling a lump? If it's pain, it may just be tissue/muscular pain. But if you feel a little lump, get it checked. It may just be internal stitches that are yet to dissolve, but it's worth it to have it checked.
kelly279 I don't think you can do any exercise until those remaining drains come out. I know it sucks, but even walking can cause those drains to fill. I know I know. It really sucks. But once those remaining drains come out, you can start up again.
-
I called the Dr and he had me come in. Thy are not sure what is causing the lump. There is a little redness so they are putting me on antibiotics and will have me come back in a week. Yay more pills.
-
Tami: youre not going to believe this......i woke up this morning.....still in pain from the tubes AND the flu i got this weekend.....thinking.......GOSH! how cool that Tami doesn't have to deal with this! I'm sorry honey! but the antibiotics will help so much! i got my first infection last Monday and the antibotics helped immediately. but this weekend i got a flu type thing and i'm not sure if it caused a slight infection on the other side or if that was why i had a temp of 103 on saturday evening. i feel much better this morning and doc says just stay on the antibiotics but i can't lie.......because of going thru everything i have in this last 15 months......this just made me cry. it made me think i wish i wouldn't have done it. and i'm a pretty strong girl! very upbeat and filled with God's spirit.....but i had a weak moment this weekend. over stupid drain tubes! lol! i know when it's all done and the drains are gone and i'm on the healing path.....i'll be way better.
i was sooooo a big ole baby this weekend! LOL! glad you're feeling better!

much love Tammi T!

Ding Dong the wicked drains are dead! Thank you God for a BS who was willing to run up to her office between cases on an OR day and take my drains out. I will love her forever. Now that I have graduated from PJs to a sweat suit it feels like formal night on a cruise ship. Now I can start gradually building my activity level up. I was terrified to do much of anything until I got rid of the drains for fear that I would have to keep them longer.
dynadebbs everyone has an occasional down day and you are certainlly entitled when you coping with both surgery and the flu. Both will sap your evergy level dramatically and when your defenses are down like that every little thing that goes wrong seems like a huge problem that piled on top of everything else is just too much to deal with. This is a journey that is filled with ups and downs but keep your eyes on the destination-regaining your health and energy so that yu can live a full and long life. You will get there sooner than you think.
-
I'm having trouble comprehending the theory behind the drains. So we have to have the drains in until they drain only a small amount, which means less physical exertion and more resting. But once they are out, we can exercise and move about a lot? Doesn't this cause a lot of fluid and now there is nowhere for it to drain? I almost feel like resting to get the drains out is cheating the system (ie getting them out earlier than we should??), if once they are out we change our habits. I guess I'm just confused because no one explained the drains to me, and I'm fearful that if I move a lot after they are out, I will have excess fluid and maybe get lymphodema??? If someone could explain this to me, I'd really appreciate it. I wish I asked more questions to the dr! I'm so confused!
Thinking of you today, TammyT!

Hi all. There seems to be a lot of people wondering about chemo. Have you all been to the John Hopkins message board? This is what I was told by them and my oncologist.
"oncotypeDx will help to make a determination regarding how beneficial or not chemo would be. commonly low grade slow growing tumors are not chemo worthy because chemo destroys rapidly growing cells and these are not of that grade. wait for score to come back. today size of tumor and age are not the major focus-- genomes are."
Here is the link.

My oncotype is back and I go in Friday to hear what is is. More waiting.
I'm thinking of you all. I think we are all realizing how massive this surgery is and that recovery is more than a few weeks. I am so over the heavy swollen concrete foobs and the pain where everything was sewn on my ribs. I hope pt will help. I'm also going to a counselor and beginning a support group here. I need to DO something to help me.
I hope drains come out, test scores are positive and moral continues to grow. Best to everyone. -
mmss! WOOOO HOOOOO! i'm soooo excited for you honey! that is way awesome! and thanks for the "pick me up"!
fight4two......i had drains before this time....when i had my mastectomy and yes....i can see where it doesn't make sense but i was fine after my drains were out. the first couple weeks you still feel some of the fluid building up but if you massage it......it will work itself out to your other lymph nodes. AND....because i waited til i was <25cc's for 3 days straight to take out my tubes......whatever was in there was small enough that my body naturally took care of it. even tho i wore a compression wrap and rested alot. it helps keep the cc's down but it doesn't help THAT MUCH. what you should really look to do is go to a lymphedema specialist. that person will tell you what to do to when you think you have too much fluid build up. it helped me alot. i did not get lymphedema after my mastectomy. i was worried about it too but it didnt happen. if you really read up on lymphedema and go see a specialist you will see that it's much easier to manage then you think it is. now....having said that.....i have to insert a disclaimer saying that everyone is different. but if you learn more about it, i think you will be fine. teach yourself what its about so you dont have to fear it anymore. good luck hun!

Prayers going up for you TammyT. Pray surgery goes smoothly, everything is accomplished and a speedy and easy recovery.
Today is the first day I feel almost normal (except when I do my exercises! Still have some pulling and twinges of pain when I do certain ones. It is amazing how stiff you get after just 3 weeks of being down!). The weather is beautiful here today a balmy 65 degrees and a high in the 70's tomorrow! Is this really January? I'm sitting out on the deck and reading over all the names for surgery in January. My heart is saddened that there are so many, but yet encouraged that there are so many fighting for healthier lives. I have lifted each of you up by name and pray that wherever you are in this journey you get continued strength.
MMSS, yay no drains! It is the most freeing experience is it not?
Tamiami, so sorry you are having to deal with the fever on top of all of this.
Robinlee76, I also had a hard lump right where my drains were, my PS told me that they could be clots so now I am taking aspirin daily until they go away.
Dadebbs, I hope your flu bug hurries up and leaves you alone!
Lmimp64, when do you start PT? I was in PT before surgery for MS related issues and my therapist told me to come back as soon as I was released to work on the tightness and scar tissue formation. PT seems to help me in most areas when I have needed it. I hope you find relief soon.
Hopex3 glad to hear you are doing so well, but do not try to rush off your pain meds too soon, pain can actually keep your body from healing. Please take it if you need to! (I know I am not telling you anything you don't already know, but sometimes we just need to hear it again!)
Pattszy, sorry to hear that more treatment may be in your future, but just as you've gotten through this, you can get through whatever they throw at you!
Lbwagner69, melindagb, and shadytrake, best of luck to you all tomorrow! Praying for calm nerves and a restful night tonight! -
Well I got sick of waiting for a bone scan results phone call, so I called the issuing Dr. myself. Happily I found out there is no evidence of mets!!! YAY!!! Still have to get a PET scan though.
Now I am sitting in my breast surgeons office awaiting the pathology report. Let's hope the days earlier results are an indication of great news to come!!! -
PeggySull - great news - will go look at their website to see if there's a freebie. Not started chemo yet, and am waiting for the date for mediport placement. Thanks for the suggestion - will follow up on it.

Kelly - I sooo feel for you with 5 drains! Geez I only have one from 1/7 and getting it pulled 1/31 - happy day. I'm still like you, can't drive either, it's hard being a patient when you lifestyle is a fairly active one.
Janice
-
Tangles - you can't do to much resting right now, that's what my BS kept enforcing, let your body heal, but that sure is hard for the head to follow.
I'm in the same boat as you, with being told I'll need chemo, radiation and 5 yrs of hormone blockers...AND I am the bread winner, having to go/drive to work, think, analyze data, etc. It's not a physical job, but a heavy mental one. I'm so scared of the "chemo brain" effect and how this could affect my type of work down the road. I know fear is paralyzing so, we all need to get these fears (dragons) out and deal with them so we can find creative ways of working through the coming months and that pink light at the end of the treatment tunnel.

Report isn't ready yet!? So very bummed out right now. It's been three weeks... the waiting is the worst part by far. Such is life I suppose. Hurry up and wait already.
-
Mirmirpanda, so sorry report isn't back. If it helps at all, I will tell you mine was almost like reading the biopsy again.Nothing new. Great news on the bone scan.
Pam, I'm beginning pt exactly 3 weeks after surgery. She only works with breast cancer and lymphodema patients so I hope to she can really help me to help myself. The pain where the alloderm is sewn onto my ribs is the worst. It actually is worse. I hope she can help me there as well as with mobility.
Best to all. -
Thanks for the support everyone! I'm doing really good again as of this morning...antibiotics have kicked in. Going to see the PA at my PS office tomorrow morning to check the drains and MAYBE remove one...not the infected one tho. That one started putting out 60-70cc's after my fill on Friday. Stupid drain! Who would have thought (or believe) that the drains are the worst part of a mastectomy? I have to keep reminding myself that things could be worse...and they really could. I know that, and I also know that some of you are going through so much more than I am and with such grace. It makes me feel silly complaining about drains.
tangles~ I'm a hairstylist too...with the same worries about my arms. I took 7 weeks off figuring that would be MORE than enough time, but now I'm just hoping that I will have enough arm stength and range of motion to do 10-12 clients a day 5 days a week! I guess I could go in shorter days to start if need be, but I just don't want to lose my clientelle!
crescent5~ I love you! You shoot straight from the hip! Thanks for the excercise info, I'm itching to get back to it as well.
Healing thoughts and wishes to you all this week, Tami
-
Mirmir, I can't imagine being 3 weeks out and no report! I'm only 4 days post surgery (1 business day) and the desire to know patho report is literally plaguing my every other thought (first I couldn't sleep because of pain and now it's my thoughts!). Don't feel like you can breath for fear of what might be!
*hugs*
Prayers for those facing surgery today, those recovering from illness and those who are still healing.
-
Well..surgery date approaching. I'd like to say that I feel ready, but I couldn't tell you. I know I am in good hands and all will be well. I will check in when I can!
Laurie

Love and prayers for Laurie, Melinda and Shadytrake, our surgery sisters for tomorrow. Enjoy the good drugs and before you know it you will be feeling so much better. We have left a huge pile of cancer cells behind us this month and that is real progress that we can all be proud of.
-
fight4two, I agree that the whole drain thing can be confusing but what it really boils down to is that you have to stay fairly quiet until the incisions heal enough that there is less drainage and then after that occurs and they pull the drains you can start back GRADUALLY into an exercise program and work your way back. A healing body hates surprises so easy does it for the best results. Do too much one day and you will pay for it for a day or two afterwards. This is NOT a no pain no gain situation and Jillian is not our taskmaster.
-
TammyT-I hope you kicked some ass today!
Lbwagner69 melindagb shadytrake-Goodluck!
-
I've temporarily misplaced my mind.
I had so much riding emotionally on that appointment today, I thought I was going to get to move forward, to find out just what my situation is... answers!!! When my surgeon said that the report wasn't available yet I cried, infact I bawled. Actually I've been bawling all day, I can't control it, I just feel so sad right now. It's so dumb, but I just can't explain this feeling. I just want to know exactly what's happening with my body, this is my life. 3 weeks... Ugh! I sure hope my oncologists appointment on Wednesday proves to be more fruitful than today's appointment with the surgeon.
Lbwagner69, melindagb and shadytrake: best thoughts with you tomorrow. Kick some ass!!! -
mirmipanda, that pathology bullshit is the worst part of BC in BC. Dr. Dingee even told me that it could take forever the day of my surgery. I did not cry but I did get mad and I think the staff at MSJH was relieved when it finally came through, not to mention everyone around me. Hurry up and wait became my motto. 3 weeks +/- a few days seems the crazy norm and BS said in US only a few days. But we can take heart in the fact that theirs is an insurance issue and patholgists there get paid a bundle to do it. Does not make it easier to wait but I bet Hazel keeps you from going completely crazy.
-
I feel so bad for complaining about it. I should be so grateful and so thankful for what I do have. I'm just still so scared and I was hoping that today would put some fears to rest. I just want this all over with, I just want my life back.
Tomorrow is another day. One step forward...
