Sheryl~Thanks for the tip. I wondered how the Biotene gum was. I also rinse my mouth 4 or 5 times a day with a mixture of baking soda & salt in warm water.

I have a 24 year old son has been Type I diabetic since he was 6 years old. He takes 4 insulin injections a day.

Since diabetics are a bit more susceptible to yeast infection and thrush of the mouth is yeast, I find it very helpful to take 1 acidophilus pill each day, and I eat yogurt every day. So far, no mouth problems at all.

Since you're getting taxotere and one side effect is neuropathy in feet & hands, ask your onc about taking vitamin B6. It's supposed to help.

I pray you have an easy time. My side effects have been minimal.

    Blessings

Paula, thank you, I do eat yogurt since I finally found one I like, Fage, Greek Yogurt, yum. I have baking soda on my list for the rinses and I am working hard to get in control of my sugar and quit eating the crap I like that is so bad for me. I figure if I can take the chemo I can at least knock off the sugar and flour products for awhile at least so the chemo works its best.

So sorry for your son but when I hear of people with diabetes type I I think of Mary Tyler Moore she has been a type I for many, many years and does well. Paula what I am finding so sad is the number of young kids coming down with diabetes type II which is caused by obesity in 80% of the cases. Doubly sad is the parents, the schools, etc still have control to a point with what the kids are eating.

Sheryl~You're right! Many of those kids are diagnosed Type I and later on they find it to be Type II. Sad. My Jesse has always been a skinny little guy. His is autoimmune from fighting a 24 hour virus. One of those vomiting/diarrhea ones. His body fought the virus so hard, the antibodies destroyed the cells that produce insulin.

I know more about Type I and Breast Cancer than I ever thought possible.

It looks like you're getting ahead of the game. After a couple days of constipation caused by anti-nausea meds, the diarrhea starts with taxetere. So don't forget meds for that, and baby wipes.

It's great to see someone else joining in on this thread. Nico & I keep bumping it, so that it stays high on the Active List. So, if you see BUMP, that's what we're doing.

Paula, I am so glad I just found you.  I have Type 1 diabetes, pump, 35 years.  (Not the A patient I should have been)  Just got dianosed IDC, Grade 3, Triple Neg, 4.0 to 4.5 with some uncertain lymph involvment.

I am presently trying to change programs at the advice of a personal friend who is a radiology ocologist.

The lump was examined on Dec 3 and I have had test everyweek going through the steps of dianosis and then the surgeon could not operate until the 15th. My Doctor friend finally got the path report after I asked it be sent on the 27th and eventually went to the hospital myself on New Year's eve and sent it myself.  He is in another state but made some calls because he felt chemo before was in order.

I am supposed to start Thursday or Friday of this week. I am most concerned of the Type 1 with the treatment.  Can you direct me with any advise or reference material?

Thanking you in advance for all your help.

    Sandra

Sandra, I know an awful lot about Type I for not being a dr. Probably more that most GPs know, but I don't know about he diabetes coupled with BC.

I do know, that with insulin, you've got to be sure to get enough carbs. I think you'll be able to do that just fine.

You didn't mention which chemo you'll be getting. I'm getting Adria/cytoxan every third weeks for 4 treatments. Then 12 weekly taxol.

I just had my 2nd chemo this past Friday. I've had no nausea or vomiting. The anti-nausea meds tend to cause constipation, so I get a head start by taking a stool softener in the morning and one in the evening, starting the day before chemo. I do that for several days.

I take an acidophilus each morning, eat a yogurt a day, and rinse my mouth several times a day with a mix of 1.tsp salt & 1tsp baking soda in a pint of water. That protects me from mouth sores and thrush. You can also use Biotene mouth wash or toothpaste.

As far as I can tell from my Bloodwork, chemo hasn't affected my blood glucose levels at all.

I tried for many years to get my son to have an insulin pump. He refused. He doesn't have the best of control. His A1C has been as high as 12.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. Let me know how you're doing.

    Blessings

    Paula

Paula, Thanks. I to do not know my protocal yet. I go today to the new center. Apparently they get together on Tuesdays of each week and will determine my path next week. I feel so blessed they have excepted me.  I have a mast scheduled for Tuesday of next week with another general surgeon and will not cancel until I am positive I am on the road with the Massey Cancer Center of UVA and certain they have a plan.

I am so resentful of having a clear Mammo in Sept, finding the lump in Nov, my ob put me in for test Dec 3rd and after all the test and space between, I got a surgery date of Jan 15th.  I felt like  it took 12 weeks to develop and another 6 for them to fit me in for  any type of treatment. Everyone was off during the holidays but my cancer. That is why I am desparately trying to move into a more aggressive program.

Please tell your son that moving to a pump was a big step for me but once I did it has made my life so much easier.  I don't have to eat at a certain time and make sure I have carbs. What you do have to do is adjust your insilin when you do eat carbs by giving yourself a bolus.  Your base rate  or basal should keep you level.  If you eat or exercise or do anything that effects your blood sugar level (stress) you adjust your pump.  My A!C was 8 last time. Should it be lower? yes. When I check my sugars regularly, it will be.  Looks like that is in my future. I will let you know what the plan is after today.  If your son has any questions about pumping, I would be happy to discuss.  Just reality, no sales pitch.
