It amazes me that all day today I just wanted to see what all the girls were doing today and how everyone was feeling. Thank you for becoming my new family. Still doing good, was a little tired today but I didn't sleep great. Damn steroids. Glad that's done for a couple weeks.

Question? After Herceptin does anyone elses neck feel tender? The nurse mentioned I may have achy flu like symptoms but thought I would ask. My back was sore after the port placememt and I had everythingthe same day so it could be just getting back to normal. Its not bad, just tender.

We got out and about for awhile today. Figured I better do it this week since my counts will probably crash next week. Still hoping for the best though.

Have a great night my sisters!

cancernoway, I've had Herceptin three times now - the first time was a stand-alone session (sans chemo).  I did feel some achiness in the area above my knees (lower thighs) but that was about it.

Well after all those good plans to make that Kale recipee - now I am too tired after shopping ( Guess will make Sunday or Monday ) . Good thing I picked up a dinner to go at Whole Foods.  Love that market but wow things are a little pricey !

Picked up some nice cleanser and moisterizer with all natural ingredients though - and deodorent to.  I really worry about all the chemicals we put on our skin .

Welcome to the new ladies and bless you all an your families  - this group is so full of good advise and help !

Hey everyone, should I be able to start chemo Monday afternoon as long as my fever is gone and I have enough fluids in me? I have a stomach bug. I am keeping water down pretty good so far.

Colleenkelly, I don't know but I'll offer up this:  I was on the tail-end of a rather nasty cough/cold and I was able to start chemo on schedule.

I hope you feel better soon.  I'm wondering if Pedialyte would help?  Also, Trader Joe's sells water that's "electrolyte" enhanced.

Thanks LeeA. Maybe if I am feeling fine I shouldn't even mention it. My mom just drove 3.5 hours to be with me for my first treatment. Is gatorade good too u think? I have some G2 here.

SeattleMama, a dear friend of mine and my PCP both went to Overlake for chemo. I thought about it -- I teach right down the road at Bellevue High School -- but I just adore my MO at Swedish. I'll tell you what, though: When I'm back at school during the Taxol months, you just let me know if you want me to swing by with a latte for you. Or a cupcake from Cupcake Royale. They said they'd make booby cupcakes for me when I'm done with chemo... and I'll share! :)

Sandra, we never call it Whole Foods in my house. We always call it Whole Paycheck. So expensive... but so yummy...

Colleen, I'd be worried about not mentioning the stomach flu to my MO. I know you want to get in there and get through this, but it's better to play it safe with full disclosure. After all, they might be able to adjust pre- and post-tx meds to help your body handle the extra insult of the stomach flu. Is there anyone on call that you could talk to tonight or tomorrow? Maybe they can give you good advice about how to get your body as prepared as possible in the next 36 hours. Feel better, sweetie.

cancernoway, I'm glad you're feeling okay so far. And I know how you feel about the group. We're a pretty lovable bunch, huh? Even if we all do start painting on eyebrows like the ones in that pic skimommi posted.

Sending some extra-special big love to all of you who are coping with round 2. Sounds like it was a tough one. Just want you to know I'm thinking 'bout you. Bisous, cheries! (Because I'm much better at French than at Italian...)

I am starting TC chemo, 4 rounds, on January 31st.  I am nervous, but I have been reading a lot on these message boards.  It has been so helpful.  I thought I was going to avoid chemo, but grade 3 on the pathology report put it back on the table.  I am 43 and teach kindergarten.  I am planning to work through this, so I know keeping things clean in my classroom will be important.  I am very happy to have found this group.

Welcome, teacherjulief, to the club none of us want to belong to.

Re: working throughout treatment - I thought I'd pass this along:  my thoracic surgeon (port placement) said he never missed a day of work when he went through chemotherapy ten years ago.

Whenever I'm dragging, which is fairly often, I think of him (note: I'm not working so I have lots of admiration for those of you who are working throughout this and/or still have children at home).

Welcome teacher Julie - we will help you through the chemo jungle ....

I am doing the same chemo as u so thought I would let u know that I do work from both home and go to the office occasionally . Days 3 - 9 are the worst for me and 7-9 is when u might be very susceptible to the little guys bugs in the classroom . I would suggest trying to time your chemo so that u can take one week or a partial week off followed by 2 weeks on . Not sure what state u live in but you should be covered by short term disability for the days u don't work and the school district can certainly get a sub for u !! Everyone is different in how they handle it so I would see how you feel after session 1 and then plan accordingly .

Don't be nervous it is "doable" and u are giving yourself the extra protection for the future :)

    Hi Julie

I'm also a teacher, though my students are teenagers. I'm not sure who is grubbier but I imagine both groups harbour their fair share of bugs. I have planned to have a week off post each chemo, as I am physically incapable of even holding myself up. but unfortunately it is the week after that that our blood cell counts are down and we are at risk of infection. I can't take more time than the one week after each AC, it's not feasible with setting work and marking etc. my first week back is this week, and I better not get sick!

    Good luck!

    Xx holly

Colleen, I am with Bryona, full disclosure is best. There is just so much to all the meds/chemo more than we can know unless we are a doctor too. Trust you MO to do what is best for you. Better safe than sorry. The best is to hydrate your body. I recommend a gallon a day if no heart or kidney problems. Gatorade is great (notice I am from Gainesville Florida home of the UF Gators LOL). Pedialyte, water, broth, jello, etc. Popsicles are my favorite esp. Edys fruit ones.

Generally if no fever, well hydrated, and no nausea/vomiting you will probably be good to go. At least your mom will be with you no matter which way the decision rolls. My DH buzzed my hair the other night and I so wanted my mother (passed 2001), I have cowlicks everywhere and I remember she wrote in my Baby Book when I was 6 months old "I can't do a thing with her hair due to the cowlicks".

    Hang tough, Sheryl

Hi all, reading and listening to TV video/music and heard this song. While I already enjoyed the song I hadn't really heard the lyrics until this am. Hope it brings you positive feelings and peace as it did me.

Phillip Phillips was the American Idol 11 season winner and these are the lyrics for his song “Home”

I felt it said what we are feeling so clearly.

Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave is stringing us along
    Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
    They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

    Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
    They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

    Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

    Hang tough, Sheryl

CancerNoWay, I joined this group because, like you, I kept checking on everyone's progress and decided that I wanted to be a part of such a loving, caring group.

KiwiKid and teacherjuli,  Like you, I am a teacher and still working.  However, as a college professor, I have the privilege of telling my students to stay away if they are sick.  I can use technology to catch them up on their work.  On the first day of class, we discussed my cancer treatment and plans for covering class if I got too ill.  My wonderful colleagues, who are willing to step in at moment's notice, came to the first day of class with me.  I am hopeful that I will be able to teach the whole semester.

Colleen, I agree with the others.  Please discuss your flu before proceeding with your chemo.  Don't take any chances.

Have a blessed day everyone.  My husband and I love movies and are going to see "Silver Linings Playbook" later. We decided to have some fun while I'm still feeling good.

A new resolution - come here to read every day without fail!  LOL it's been probably just a week and took me all afternoon and evening yesterday to catch up!

You ladies are THE BEST!!!  Reading all the posts took a while but was so rewarding!  I have a word document open and am cutting and pasting your wisdom, your tips, your humor, and your inspiration and the document is at page 22!

Nothing to add just now; I am entering the 3rd week, feeling great, and actually looking forward to losing the hair just to get it over with!

    Everyone have a restful Sunday.

Good Morning Ladies! I too think all day long about how all of you are doing. Wondering what kind of new catch phrase we've come up with, now pics and just our daily grind. I am so glad to have found all of you. You truly have made this journey emotionally and physically doable. ((Cyber High Five))

Day 3...TX#2... and I had the mother of all steroid highs yesterday. I was up at 7 and cleaned the house, took my niece to donate her hair, shopped for her flowers. I am doing her flowers (silk) for her. I did my own flowers and the were so pretty that she asked if I would do hers !! I thought Hell Yeah, with this steroid high I could have a bridal party of 12 with parents grandparents and ushers done in like a hour. lol. She is a great girl, I will cry like a baby when she is married.

So other than the high, nothing to report. Taking my meds when I am supposed to and just feel a bit tired sometimes. I wish all of you to have minimal SEs. I am so afraid of being sick.

3littleangels- Yes TX#2 My hair is gone. I started to pull some out at day14 and we buzzed it on day 16. I had very long hair and cut it short twice before I buzzed. Now (everyone is still laughing about this) I take the pet hair lint sticky roller to my head once a day to get the stubble off. It really works great.

Jubby- It gets better. I am not on the same TX as you but I do see others post that it gets better. Hang in there. It's tough not to give your all to your babies. Mine is 10 and I hate that I cant keep up with him right now.

Lauren- Good to get that port checked. Hopefully its some antibiotics and home quickly for you. Emergency rooms are not a place to be during all this.

    SherylB- Great lyrics. Well stated.

Colleen- def tell them that you had a bug. I dont think that will stop chemo tomorrow. If you are feeling better, they should see that and you can belly up! I will say am extra prayer tonight for you to have a good day tomorrow.

To all you wonderful strong beautiful women.... Thank god for all of you. We are a small village of warriors. I am blessed to have all of you in my thoughts and prayers. I so speak of you often to my friends. I wish all of you wonderful memories and long lives!!

Beautiful Sunday here in upstate NY. Its going to be 27 degrees. I am going for a walk today...

Thanks everyone for your kind words about my craptastic day. I really needed it. Turns out PMS cancels out happy pills-at least it did for me. Lol I'm thankful yesterday I woke up feeling like my old self and went and spent time with my favorite germ factories: my 5 year old niece and year old nephew. She entertained me by dancing to this odd Japanese techno music on my nephews toy and all I thought was "this is how our crack monkey dances." It was great.

As for food-I crave ethnic foods like crazy from the pathetic (taco bell) to my beloved Tom Kha (coconut milk soup) from my Thai restaurant. Tonight I'm getting Ethiopian with my BF :-p''' I'm living it up while I can before round 2 weds and my appetite goes to the crapper.

I don't have mouth sores per se-but my tongue started getting super sore and feels like there are cuts on it. Does that make sense to anyone? It's not thrush because I have no white spots-it's odd.

Welcome all newbies and gd2shuz I'm so happy you got that great news!

Colleenkelly I agree with everyone else regarding letting your MO know that you've had stomach flu.  When I saw my MO prior to the first chemo one of the first things I told him was that I was at the tail-end of a cough/cold.  He kind of brushed it off and away I went over to the infusion area.

Nikki I've been thinking about you and offering up positive thoughts/prayers toward the Cincinnati area.  I'm so glad to hear you're feeing better.  One of my favorite steakhouses of all time is in your area - The Precinct (or I assume it's still there - I haven't been to Cincinnati in years and no longer eat much steak).  Glad you had a good time with your niece/nephew.

louise8118 Welcome, and glad to hear you are feeling great!   I was just looking at your diagnosis/treatment section.  Does your MO have you holding off on Herceptin until after rads?  Our cocktail is almost the same: taxotere, carboplatin and herceptin but I'm getting the herceptin concurrently with the taxotere and carboplatin.

    Editing to add:

Sheryl, great lyrics - thanks for posting them.  I'm sure I've heard the song as I was an American Idol watcher last year (I've given it up for good this year).  Once my DH wakes up I'm going to listen to the song on YouTube.

    Sheryl,

To me kale tastes like brussel sprouts, slightly bitter. To make it in a salad, make sure you massage the leaves after you tear it into bite size. This will break down the fiber so it won't be so tough.  Read it in a recipe once.

Also bake kale with some olive oil and sea salt until wilted taste good too.

These are all before chemo, don't know how it will taste during chemo though!

We add a half or full bag of kale to our vegetable soup toward the end of the cooking cycle.

Hello to all of you wonderful ladies! Like you, I am often thinking/wondering about you all during the day. You are like my new best friends. Sheryl, I love that song. Had posted it on my CaringBridge site before having bmx in October. It was very fitting.

Well #2 has been a little tough. I feel relatively BLAH!! Tried to go out and enjoy a movie with DH last night and wouldn't even be able to tell you about the darn thing. I feel like I slept through it. Nothing sounds good at all, but mexican food tastes fantastic. Water is hard to go down too, even though I know the hydration is important. Felt a little weepy this morning after the shower rubbing this peach fuzz on my head. My face looks 40, but my head looks 90. So weird. I haven't gone without something on my head for one minute, but DH says I need to let my head breath. Ha! I tell him the material on my buff is breathable enough.

Cancernoway, I'm not on Herceptin but have been achy as well. My neck is super sore like I've been lifting weights. I did walk and ride a stationary bike the past couple of days, but geez, really? Tell me I am not this sore just from a little exercise.

Colleenkelly, so sorry you have to deal with the stomach bug. We go through all this preparation to be sure and not be sick during chemo, yet you have to deal with it before starting.

I have to say the prilosec has been awesome. Heartburn was never a problem for me before, but boy did I have some issues last time. So, due to the advice on this board I've taken it every morning on schedule. Thank goodness too since all I can stomach is spicy food. This is the point where I just don't want to swallow anything else though. Really, really not looking forward to what round #3 will bring. :(

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will let my MO know about the bug. Hopefully it doesn't delay me being able to get my first dose of the red devil tomorrow. Skigirl, I can't believe you think 27degrees is warm enough to go walking in . Burr. It's been raining here last couple of days but generally we hit the 60's for the high. Sometimes even 70's. We had one week where the low was in the 20's and I froze my ass off! I should make a commune out of my house here and you can all move to AZ while we go thru treatments. That would be a hoot! Skimommi, I hope you get some energy back soon. Does anyone know if it would be okay to take immodium AD before my chemo? Don't want to be worried that I may have an accident while sitting there after this stupid bug.

Skimommi- I don't usually wear anything on my head while I am in the house. Only when I go out. I'm sure that will change when the weather warms up. I do find myself comfortable enough to take off my buff when I am sitting with some friends at their place or when I am out. I think its no big deal if you are among friends. I hope I will get used to it when I work and can tear off the BUFF when I got to hot working. That would be funny... I'm sure that will surprise a few customers...

I take prilosec every morning. It's been that way for a few years and I am so happy I have no more heartburn. I did take a TUMS the first time around for just one day. no issues yet with heartburn. Once you are done with this TX schedule wean yourself off of it slowly. Go to every other day, then very third and then you should be back to your normal before chemo.

    Happy Sunday, friends!

Sheryl, thanks for the lyrics...we should make this our team song as for me, I feel this is truly a home I can come to that will uplift me and make me feel safe.  I, too wonder about all of you during the day and often tell my DH I have to go check in with my friends.  While I would certainly give back my diagnosis if I could the experience has not been all bad and I have learned to treasure the many blessings it has brought to my life of which I count you all among.   Have a beautiful day!

Colleen - I am so sorry you had that stomach bug - but glad you are starting to feel a bit better.

Regarding the immodium - can you call your " on call"  Dr or does you health plan have an " ask a nurse"  service - most health plans do.  I would recommend utilizing those resources with your questions today on Sunday so you can go into the session tomarrow with peace.  The nurses there will take good care of you  - my 2 experiences have been quite pleasant on the day of the session - you feel pampered a bit even though what you are going through is not what you ever dreamed of.

Skimommi I am sore too! My neck and shoulders and upper torso hurts to be touched. It was the same with round 1. I'm on day 8 now and it started about day 5 and is now improving somewhat. It feels like it could be muscular but I just think it's how my body processes toxins. I hope that gives you some comfort.
