I'm not saying you can't wear the one with zippers for 9 weeks if you want.  I'm just saying... in the world of compression garments, per the people who make them and the lipo doctors who give them to patients... no one expects the zippered ones to be comfortable enough to wear that long.  They have zippers because you're swollen and sore and it's hard to pull up a garment.  The non-zippered ones are more comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. FOR MOST PEOPLE.

If your doctor insists on zippers for 9 weeks, or you don't find them uncomfortable... mazel tov. More power to you.

I'm just saying... there are two styles of garments for a reason.  And you don't have to wear the zippered one the whole time if you don't want.  Compression is compression. There's no difference in the fabric or compression strength between "stage 1" and "stage 2" garments (stage=lipo/compression garment terms, not breast recon terms), except that manufacturers make stage 1 garments in the same size slightly larger to accommodate swelling.

Having said that... it's possible the doctors are recommending a certain style or brand because they think it works better.  But I think the (post-surgical compression) garment manufacturers would argue that point.

P.S. to throw my experience in the mix... and Dr. M will hate me for this... I wore Marena 99% of the time I wore compression, and I never had a seroma or excessive swelling.  Both with SGAP and DIEP, after all surgeries. No problems whatsoever. The Veronique however... my skin hated the rough fabric, got blisters in spots, the zippers pinched my skin when I sat, and putting it on once gave me a panic attack because it was so constraining and binding in certain areas.

Yes, everyone is different.  That was my experience.

Hi Linda,  everything seems to be going well for me.  I am also interested in what the Gals have to say about the tattoos with no nipple protrusion.  I am still on the fence about what to do.  If I knew the nipples were a slam dunk I would do them.  I just don't want to open the door to problems.  I have a date in April for my 2C.  I need a little more symmetry and sure hope this visit will finish that off.  I was worried about my butt (SGAP areas) but I'm seeing some improvement at almost 6 weeks. How are things with you?  We are having a cold snap in NC and have ice on the roads.  Good time to hibernate.....except company coming for dinner. Warm Hugs, Jamie

    Jamie,

What will Dr M be doing to give symetry? Just fat grafting?

I'm with you on the nips or no nips. I'm starting to work with Dr K scheduler on dates for 2b. I will need a 2c so dont need to make decision on nips for a while.

Sounds like you are getting close to finish line on recon. :)

I finally got on the photo forum and am now considering nips.  I didn't see too much protrusion and thought it could be covered easily if desired.  Yes, I know - changing my mind, but hoping I don't have to decide before Stage 2.  With nips, do people have Dr. M do the tatoo or do they go to Vinnie.

Jamie - are you before or after me in April?

Yes it sure has been quiet here!  I think that Sewaneegirl should be out of the hospital shortly.

Pink, what are you having done at 2b?

The weather turned colder here at the Isle of Palms, but it is what I expected the whole time to be so no biggy, kind of nice watching the waves look more like Hawaii! Brr at night but good brrr. Home was for sure brrr without the view.

I've not heard from Sewannee yet, hoping her hospital went well and she is released soon, hoping also that Marty and I get to meet her.

I had part of stitches (the only ones that will be removed) removed yesterday, the others dissolve. But sore anyway, think its the way I positioned for them to be reached. All in all things are going as planned per Dr. K and the new flap is "beautiful" - trusting him as I don't see it yet, but I'm sure he sees the big picture.

And, sure has been quite here. I haven't been on the photo section, but will try to get there too. I'm also in a quandry re nipples. My daughter doesn't think I need them, however I do. Just not sure which. Will look to you ladies for guidance there.

    Happy Weekend!

    Marty,

I'm getting ready to send pics and email with questions to Dr. K to ask about symmetry, breast lifts or whatever the heck they do.

Will be starting fat grafting, too. My SGAP butt donor site was perfect after stage one. He did smooth out part of one incision on left butt even though I never asked. My bilat SGAP incision looks more like a Hip flap incision and looks more like a V.

He may need to smooth out incisions from LNT lymph node transfer sites at 2b. Time will tell.

    Gma,

Looks like warm weather coming your way at the beach again. It's been in single digits here so talk about Brrrrrr. :)

    Hi ladies,

Yes it has been quiet here lately! I am continuing to heal and am looking forward to my next appointment on the 4th with Dr. Craige.  Hoping to get rid of some more drains - the bane of my existence these days!  The one on my left hip looks to me like it is trying to come out (the stitch on the drain is no longer next to my skin).  I talked to Kim yesterday, but she didn't seem concerned.  Hopefully it will hang on - lol!  And also looking forward to talking to them about scheduling my DIEP for my failed left side.

Hope everyone is healing well! Take care,

    Beth

Hi Marty, I am scheduled on April 9th...so I'll be after.  Its funney that we talked about nipples and now we are both on the fence.  We are women and it is our perogative to change our minds!!

PinkHeart,  I'm not sure what Dr. M will do.  It may be that she reduces lefty a little and does a little reshaping.  Not sure about the fat grafting.

I can't remember which site I was on talking about the tattoo ink.  I emailed my permanent makeup lady and this is what she told me.  She uses Premier Pigments that are organic.  The regular type ink is not to be used in intraderall cosmetics (permanent makeup).  I guess you can go on the site and they list the artists that use it.  She does say it is long lasting and certainly has been on me.

    Beth,

I've had 15 drains in past 18 months. I always use white hypoallergenic medical tape to tape down drains about an inch or so from drain incision site so it's not tugging on stitches. Have heard that many patients do this. I always ask nurse in hospital for roll of that tape. Good to hear from you and that you hanging in there well. Take care.

Jamie - I think I realized that I might want nips with projections after I wore the coobie with the pads inserted.  Haven't worn a bra in so long I didn't realize how easy it was to cover.  Besides, right now they are like the nose cone of a B-52 - in need of focus.

Downey,  maybe this is just on my computer,  but has anyone else see a bunch of numbers, letters, different languages under what Downey writes, or is it just my computer (Mac), Or maybe I'm delirious. LOL.

Beth,  In my stage I one of my drains just fell out on it's own. I don't remember what my numbers were at that point, but I was so surprised and it scared me to death.

I was going to do nips, but I promised my family I woun't have any more surgery.  So I will either stay with the Barbie doll look or see Vinnie or someone just as qulified for 3D.  FYI.  I have a BC.org friend that has had her nips tattooed by her Dr. and they always fad.  Maybe I can have her pipe in on this.  I will go with Vinnie, or Earlene in Ashville, NC.

So glad to hear from all of you and what is going on.  I live in MI but my DH and I are in Orange Beach, AL for 1 month so avoid some of the cold.  We will still have to face it at the end of Feb., but I have to keep positive and know that Spring is just around the corner.

Me to, might be something in her settings?

How long do tattooed nips last vs the protrusion ones? I guess I've been so concerned about just getting the flaps that I put the nips on the back burner. But thinking about them now. So many questions!

Pink, I'd be interested in that type of tape, I've made a little carrier for my drain with a 2x2 gauze with tape at the top of the gauze about a couple of inches up to serve as sort of a sling, trying to not put tape on the tubing, do you tape the tubing without a problem? If so, that would be even better. This drain is coming out of my thigh and it is bothersome 90% of the time.

And, yes, good weather coming on Tuesday I think!

Dr. M did my nips, Vinnie did my tats. The nips look good, but have flattened out . The tats have faded some, but I'm done! Truly wasn't seeking perfection and I am totally thrilled with my results! My breasts look and feel so real...well, they are, but you know what I mean.

    Catie,

Yes, i put the tape across the tubing to keep it flat against my body. When moving my drains from cami pouches to lanyard when i take showers, i have dropped the drain but having the tape in place stopped it from pulling directly on stitch holding it in.

Hope u get your drains out soon. Are you driving yet or still on pain meds?

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing that on Downey's posts.   Oh Downey, don't worry about it....we want to hear from you.

Marty, what is a coobie?  A bra?  Also, are you saying that your new girls are pointed?  Mine are quite round.  I like the bra by Sassybax.  It is similar to a Geni, but the fabric is sturdier and it is pricey.  If you like the pointed look then this wouldn't be a style for you, but I like how it holds me, is comfortable and eliminates bra bulge.  Not pretty with lace, but they may have one that does.  Only comes in the basic colors.  The one I get is called the bralette from the classic collection. Not for everyone, but I like it for me.  One drawback is that is should be hand washed, but I just put mine on a hand wash cycle in my machine and hang to dry.  You could also put it in one of those lingerie bags.

Bdavis  Three days and counting.  Sending good vibes your way with Dr. D in NOLA!  Let us know how you are doing.

I have had tats from Dr.M twice and they have faded to the point I will be going and having them redone probably by Erlene in North Carolina.  Dr. Massey does not like to do tats and she tried to talk me out of doing them and told me she wanted me to go and let Vinnie do them because he was the expert in that line, like she was the expert in the reconstruction part.  Since I was already in Chicago for tats, I told her I wanted her to go ahead and do the work, and she did.  They did fade...and like I said before, that was the second time she had colored them.  I am not even sure if she does them anymore! I would really like to get a group of us together to go to Erlene in North Carolina to get our tats done.  Linda...you know that is our next "mermaid" trip on the agenda!!!!!  If anyone has any questions, feel free to pm me!!!

Downey, I agree with Linda, would rather have you post than worry about seeing stuff. I think we just wanted to make sure it wasn't our particular screen/computer that was giving us those weird codes. I for one can very well overlook them, and think your posts are pretty interesting.

The whole nipple thing is what sent me out of a PS in Atlanta in 1994 in tears. I was a single mother, 3 sons in college and a teen age daughter. I freaked with my dx, thought I was going to die shortly and if not, be single forever. I was wrong on both counts. However the nipple thing had me decide to do the lumpectomy, rads and chemo instead of mx. My second son and his girlfriend were with me for the appt but waited in the waiting room. Up until that visit they hadn't seen me cry at all. I came out in tears. The PS had NO bedside manner at all, took pictures of me and told me that the nipples would be tattooed on, and that was my only option.

In between sobs (I think it all just let loose then) going into the elevator to go home, I told my son (who had no idea why I was crying so hard) that they were going to tattoo me. He was relieved to find out it was ONLY tattooing I was crying about. He told me that I should remember that when he was in boot camp the previous summer he was his in charge of designing and drawing the flag for his platoon and that every time I needed to go on a date, he would draw nipples on my breasts.

I didnt think he needed that responsibility, but it stopped my crying and had me laughing the remaining time in the elevator.

Now, I am thinking which way would be best for me. My daughter doesn't want me to do more surgery stuff, I'm thinking at that time it must be a piece of cake compared to all the other surgeries, and I want to feel and look as close to normal as possible. I'm not married to protrusions but not sure what it would be like without. I know that I was happy with what the SGAP looked like in a bra (albeit only 1 side) and that Dr. K. is pleased with the PAP breast.

I saw Vinnie's site and a couple of his tattoo breasts, if that isn't protrusion he must be an artist!

How long after stage 2 do you do the tattoes?

Pink, no havent started driving yet. I still have the thigh drain in my right thigh. They took the tissue from my right leg/thigh for the left PAP. The position of the drain is kind of funky so would probably wait until that drain is out to drive. I thought from last time I was told to wait to drive until the drain was out. And, I still am taking pain meds, not as many or as often but certainly taking them. I tried to decrease more but really was not keeping up with the pain.

I'm hoping to lose the drain soon though. But I will do your tape thing as the most pain is when it moves on the thigh and pulls.

Gma....Dr M did my nips as part of my Stage 2b. It was a 6 hr surgery, but she did a lot of other little cosmetic things, and had to flip me during surgery. I think they mainly want all "positioning and filling" of the breasts to be finished before nipples are done, so the location of them will be right, and they won't move.

When I say my nips flattened out.....after my nipple recon, the nips were almost the size of a small grape. I freaked out!! But Dr M knew exactly what she was doing and they settled in to be almost perfect shape. One is a liitle weird shaped, but still ok. And if I wear a T shirt, there is a definite nipple protrusion. However, if you run your finger across it, it feels flat....no bump at all. It's fine for me...DH would probably like something "to feel", but it is what it is.

If it wasn't for DH, I would have gone with the 3D tats, Linda. I loved the nice round breast!!!

Sandy...so great to have you pop in!! Miss seeing you around here. Would love to get together with you girls, but probably won't do more tattooing!

Linda - a Coobie is a bra that Jamie (Downey) set me on.  It is a one-size fits all (really does), has narrower straps than my genie (which I really didn't like).  No I am not pointy.  After Stage 1, I probably resemble many others in having 2 hamburger buns.  I am just thinking ahead about the nipples.

Sandy, good to hear about Dr. M and the tats.  Many years ago, after my implants were placed my PS used a plastic disc thing that added projection.  Kind of like having your headlights on all the time.  He tatooed, it faded completely within 6 weeks.  He said that the body will absorb the ink sometimes and tatooed again.  I think Vinnie will be a perfect addition to the team.  Sort of a grand finale!

Catie - I know that your daughter loves you bunches and doesn't want to see you go through more surgery, but you are still young.  If you would feel more finished with nips and tats, then do it.  It is what goes on in your brain more than hers.

Jamie - I, too, would rather hear from you.  Did you notice, on your last post there wasn't any gibberish?

Thanks everyone.  I can't figure out what it going on but I'm gonna try.  I posted before about the tattoo inks.  I started with permanent makup almost 30 years ago when the Opthamologists were doing it.  It was my girlfriends husband that first did it.  Not good!  Anyways, long story short I have been done many times over the years because my body absorbs the ink. The tatoos for radiation only lasted about 10 days. I found a lady here in NC and everything that she has done on me has really stayed.  She uses an organic ink called Premier Pigments. Regular ink is not to be used in intraderall (permanent makeup)....so close to the eyes.  She doesn't do the three D tattoos.  I wish she did because she is really good. I am so looking forward to when I get to this step.  I'm going to do a HAPPY DANCE!  Still on the fence about nipples but really leaning that way.  Hope if I do she can do it in April.  Hugs to all.

Catie, I know our family wants to see us finished too.  I know I am not done until I know it.

gma10, The Center told me that Vinnie requires 12 weeks post final surgery.

Bennetts1,  What do your know about Erlene?  I live in NC

Bdavis,  you have been here so much for all of us.  We will be sending prayers and healing thoughts your way.  Enjoy your time with your DD.
