Ovaries Removed Instead of Tamoxifen - Factor V

Options

Just finished Rads on 12/7/12.   My sister just has some bloodwork done and found out she has Factor V (a blood clotting disorder) and for her siblings to be tested - it's inherited.  My onc tested me and it came back positive.  He is recommending that I get my ovaries removed instead of taking Tamoxifen because of the blood clot SE. (I am sure I will have to take Aromatase therapy after- forgot to ask was so freaked out) Have an appt with gyno tomorrow to discuss.  I asked onc why I just wouldn't have a total hysterectomy and he said I didn't need it just my ovaries?????  I would rather just get it all taken out.  What are some feelings on this?

I had my ovaries removed in Sept. because of history of clots.  Most docs will not do complete hysterectomy unless it's medically necessary.  Ovaries produce estrogen as do adrenal glands.  Tamoxifen is only for pre-menopausal women.  Removing ovaries will throw you into instant menopause thereby making you a candidate for an AI.  I'm on Femara plus a blood thinner (Coumadin).

For me personally, I felt I'd already given enough up to cancer.  Less is best:  less surgery, meds, etc.  Hope this helps.

Msmickig, very often ovary removal only is done because the uterus helps support other pelvic organs. A possible SE of hysterectomy is bladder prolapse. If your uterus is healthy, why take the chance?

    Best of luck.

Depending on how strongly positive your estrogen receptors are, ovary removal is the strongest defense you can get. AI's have a slightly better rep than tamox. And less side effects.

How about Fareston as an alternative to Tamoxifen?

Thanks for the feedback ladies!  Fareston is only used for metastatic bc I thought. My estrogen receptors are very positive (95% & 97%)  beth1965 I would definitely look into this.  My onc was very adamant about the ovary removal when he found out I was Factor V so it scared me.  Then when my gyno agreed, I was "lets do this!"  I met with my gyno yesterday and she is recommending that I have both my ovaries and uterus removed. I think I am going to do it - just get it all out.  Called my onc to tell him I'm going through with it and expressed my concerns that I wouldn't be on any hormone blockers for a month after radiation by the time I have my hysterectomy.  He said it will be ok.  Asked him when I would go on the Armatase inhibitor and he was hesitant (almost like he wasn't going to put me on it).....he said we would discuss when I came in for my 3 month check up in March. I'm confused.  Why wouldn't he put me on that since I will be post-menopausal after the hysterectomy?  What else would I take?

    Is it for premenopausal women?
