First mammogram after lumpectomy abnormal?
Has anyone had an abnormal first mammogram after their lumpectomy? I got a letter from the breast center saying there were some abnormal findings on it. Has this happened to anyone else?

This has not happened to me but wanted to just reach out and tell you that I'm sorry and can only imagine the stress. Drs will now be extra sensitive to any little thing that shows up given your history, it is the new reality, and the truth is you may have nothing at all to worry about, but it is so very stressful.
Did you also have radiation treatments? I had rads after my lumpectomy and the rad onc. strongly encouraged me to have a "post lumpectomy baseline mammogram" prior to starting rads, because she wanted to spare me the stress of potentially having questionable things show up with my first post-rad mammogram (I took her advice, although wasn't thrilled about even more rad exposure).
Wishing you the best.

I was called back, too, at my six month appt, although I didn't have to wait for a letter. At my center, once you've had cancer, you have diagnostic mammos from there on out. I waited and they came to tell me that I needed more films and an ultrasound. Once I had that with the radiologist present, they went back and studied it and then told me that as far as they could tell it was surgical changes. And they said that once you've had surgery, they have to figure out your new normal, just like we have to get used to the way it feels different. I was actually kind of reassured by that.
I've gone back for my one year followup and it was a very quick appointment. One stop in the mammo room and that was it! (:

I'm sure you ladies already know this, But just in case.
Make sure they are using a Thyroid Guard on you when you have your mammos!!!
I read there has been a significant rise in Thyroid Cancer in women which is being attributed to failure to use a Thyroid Guard.
Your dentist should also be using one when they take x-rays.
I went in for a mammo and asked if they had a Thyroid Guard, the tech said yes they did, it was in a drawer nearby. I guess they deem it a hassle to put one on you.

Tn Helen,
They called me back after my first post-lumpectomy mammo because they thought they saw new calcifications. After a magnification mammo, they wanted to do a biopsy. I told them no biopsies until I had an MRI.
I then had an Aurora RODEO MRI, which has less than a 1 percent false negative rate. Even though the RODEO MRI couldn't find anything, the radiologist did an ulrasound and found 2 other questionable areas, which she also then wanted to biopsy.
Because 3 biopsies would be a lot of scaring, making future imaging even harder to read, I got a 2nd opinion from a nationally known radiologist, Dr. Steven Harms. He reviewed everything and said he didn't see anything that he thought needed to be biopsied. He recommended another Auroroa RODEO MRI in 6 months. I had that last August and the only change was the areas in question were a little smaller, than they had been 6 months earlier.
Women often have unnecessary biopsies, because of the fear of missing something. My story illlustrates not only the value of getting a high quality MRI that has a very low false negative rate, but also how important it is to have an expert radiologist read your results. It saved me from getting 3 unnecessary biopsies.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Best,
Sandie

I just had my first mamogram after all chemo, radiation etc. It came back saying it shows surgical changes? Waiting to hear from the BS. What ever happened here with everyone? I was told by nurse not to worry I might have to have another mamogram in 4-6 months. I also asked the tech if she had the throyid guard and she said oh I think it is in the draw somewhere and she never got it for me. I am not putting up with that no more. She was lazy and very mean to me with the mamogram. She kept saying, relax I am do the driving here. I don't want her next time.

Hi tnhelen, I had a lumpectomy in March 2012. Another mammo and MRI in October and further calcifications were noted. I then proceeded to Mx. My BS was convinced that the calcifications were there in March just not picked up at the time of the original lumpectomy. Another lumpectomy was recommended but I insisted on MX and am now in the process of reconstruction. I have not regretted this decision.
All the best Lola.

Thank you Beesie, it's been 2 days no phone call so maybe everything is ok, the woman doing the mammo could not tell be anything she said the radiologist had to red them and he was going to read them until yesterday so no news is good news!!!!

No news is good news!
I had my 6 month post surgery mammo and an ultra sound on the 22nd. Then I'm meeting with the surgeon on Thursday. I guess that is the protocol here. It was all arranged prior to the tests. I'm a bit nervous, but confident it will be fine! But the tech ( who I'm a little ticked at) asked me when I was going to see the surgeon...so now of course, in the back of my mind I'm thinking....what did she see????

mine came back as a bi rads 3. It said no malignancy detected. But a bi rads 3 sounds very very scary to me
The student dr called me in and said micro calcification were there so I raced in. While in apt the real dr said those aren't micro calcifications. So now I'm just shitting Bricks
