So...whats for dinner?

LOL at the dishwasher stories. So I'm not the only one who rearranges. DH's philosophy is that if it fits somewhere in the dishwasher, he has done his part in cleaning the dishes! It may be hereditary because his mother could get more dishes into her dishwasher than seemed possible. When I load the dishwasher, the dishes are clean because I rinse them and brush off sticky food residue.
He does pretty well with unloading the dishwasher. Occasionally when he "misplaces" something, I realize that his placement might be better than mine. Otherwise I just change the placement and don't complain. Unloading the dishwasher is not one of my favorite tasks.
Dinner tonight is a bowl of home-made beef veggie noodle soup that DH cooked today while I was out and about. It's delicious because I had some of it for a late lunch when I got home. I'll make a salad and slice up some home-made artisan wheat bread.
-
So. we only run the dishwasher every other or third day, with just the two of us here. I rinse and put the dishes in as we use them and then when its time to run the thing my DH rearranges it first. I have them in there right, but he arranges them by size...all lg plates together, sm plates together etc. If he is so anal about this, why isnt he the same about getting them in there in the first place? Leaves his dishes for me to pick up! It must be "selective OCD"?
Tonight will be salad with the leftover chicken I grilled yesterday.
Welcome Belinda and Carollynn
Linda Thank You, we received the news.
-
Carole, that fits my DH's philosophy perfectly. I too asked him to leave out the things if he didn't know where they went but so many things ended up on the counter, I think he felt that he hadn't done much lol. Oh well, I can't really complain, he has a lot of other very fine qualities. For instance, after he put dishes away today, he went to his workshop and made me a pasta drying rack. Gotta love him!
-
Nancy, that's great! Neither DH nor I are handy. The light bulb burned out of the light in the foyer. DH, my two DS's and I all tried to get the cover off to replace the bulb, and none of us could figure it out. I bought a lamp to plug in and put in the foyer! It seemed crazy to call a repairman to replace a light bulb. My brother said he'd come over and fix it, but I've been waiting since Christmas Eve.
Carrie, I think I must e distantly related to your DH. I am OCD about the dishwasher, but will leave empty glasses just sitting around. But I am also the one who will pick it up the next morning and put it in the dishwasher. If I go away I can tell when I get home if anyone cooked because I have a system for putting the plates away. We have three sets of everyday dishes because of breaks. They are similar, but not exactly alike. I always put them in the cabinet in a set way. If they used the dishes, the three sets are always mixed together in the column instead of the way I do it. They don't know how I always know what they've done. I guess they think I am psychic. LOL
DH made chicken masala in the crock pot today. We also had naan and basmati rice. I enjoyed it!
Welcome to the newbies! Debbie, it sounds like you are having quite a vacation! I am so glad you're enjoying yourself. Love everyone's dinner choices. Looking forward to trying some new recipes soon. -
Newbies. -
Kay- Again I am laughing, as a child or in my 20's I would stop by my parents house and scrounge for food due to lack of income and my own food. I would look around the kitchen before I left and think- its perfect, they will never know I was here. My mom would always call me in the next few days and say- so- you stopped and had a BLT? WTF? How did she know that? I washed and dried my dishes etc. Now as the woman running the household and doing all of the cooking and cleaning I get it. I know how many strips of bacon are left over now too. But I was in awe that she knew I had been there!
-
Lol on the Mom super powers!
Although I can relate to having older kids with their late night eating... I usually plan my meals for the week and it's frustrating when I go to get an ingredient out that I need, usually something I've already made that was going to be 'reborn' as something else, and it's gone leaving me to scramble last minute...grrrrrrr....
Tonight was stuffed peppers that I had made and frozen when I had lots of peppers from my garden.... Didn't even thaw them... Just put a little sauce in the casserole dish, plunked them in and topped with a little more sauce.... Super easy! Edited to add: I also covered them with foil and baked them... Lol.... -
Glad our new gals received the official Deb welcome. Thanks Deb!
I have to admit I probably have the selective OCD dx too since I do not mind clutter since I can generally remember where everything is but can't stand mess, dirt (like the mud the builder guys traipsed all over our floors today...ick!) sticky, etc. And a confession ...I have recently been stacking OUR three sets of dishes in a different order than compulsive DH religiously does...just to mix things up a bit....and because I prefer to use the newer ones on the bottom
Speaking of psychic moms....Some years ago, our younger son had stayed home one weekend when we went to the lake. He was a college student and extremely well connected to the social network in our town. So, we worried about the chance of a party happening at home, even tho he was a really trustworthy guy, still a college student! Being really crafty we called around 9 PM Sat evening and told him we decided we might drive home that night instead of the next day. We didn't, and when we arrived home the next night, as soon as we entered the kitchen, the dog slipped on the waxed floor (hmmmm) no confession,..... then I noticed that some furniture was a bit out of line and by the time, I asked why the hurricane lamp was in a new place, he threw up his hands in frustration and told us about the "gathering" he had that (of course) drew more than invited guests, (fortunately for us not too many more...and one kid who drove here got fall down drunk and they all spent a lot of effort getting him and his car back to another town). He thought he'd carefully blocked off parts of the house using the furniture, and cleaned all the floors and any other "suspect" areas needing cleaning right after everyone left. So was he surprised when his mother noticed scene after scene being different than the way she left it...and the waxed floor really gave it away! We all still laugh over that now. Whew...glad they are all grown!
Since our kitchen was off limits today we went to the Rice Barn for lunch (DH's idea...he loves their "box lunches"...had the Korean one). I had a delightfully light dish of chicken and shrimp with asparagus and snowpeas.
Tonight we had lamb lamejan, baba ganoush, and cuke salad. -
Sharon gets frustrated with the "disappearing food items". I just kind of go with the flow and either deal with it by coming up with something else, or going to the store to replace the missing items...we have a store about 1 minute drive from the house.
I guess our different attitudes about this comes from college. Sharon lived in a dorm and ate the dorm food. I had my own place and I followed he "Here's what I have. What can I make with it?" method.
Sometimes I couldn't make anything with what I had in the house....M&Ms, cheese puffs, beer and bacon don't offer many possibilities.....when that happened, Mickey would ride her bike the two blocks to her apartment and call on the phone so we could combine resources. If she was also down to M&Ms, cheese puffs, beer and bacon, then we would *have* to go to the store... Although I do remember that one time, right after we had paid our tuition and bought our books (and budgets were *LEAN*), actaully trying bacon wrapped cheese puffs...it sort of worked! :-)

Eric...culinary creativity in the good ol times!

I had some lean times in college just like so many. My junior year really started bad. Ihad enough money for tuition and books and very little for subsistance. Lived in an apartment with a roommate and figured we could make it by sharing expenses but she got homesick after two weeks and moved home to commute. The increased rent ate my food budget.
I got lucky. Landlord gardened, had way too much produce and a root cellar. Kept me well supplied with onions, potatoes and carrots. After a couple of weeks fried patoes and onions got old. A guy I knew took pity on me when he heard about my predicament and invited me to dinner, I brought him a bag of my produce. He too was a poor student but had a very part time job in the meat Dept of the local store. He kind of adopted me as a little sister and we pooled our resources. I had dinner at his house almost every day for the rest of the school year. But for him I probably would have had to move home that year.
-
Bacon wrapped cheese doodles sounds like it would be my DH favorite meal! And how bout those college Ramen noodles? And box mac n cheese at 59 cents a box.
-
After my mom got us the paperback Betty Crocker cookbook and we figured stuff out, the Ramen noodles and Mac & Cheese became less of a staple.
Final exam stew was designed to last the whole exam week and was added to as needed. Since we would be gone a couple of weeks for semester breaks, it was a put everything that might spoil while we were gone into a huge pot and let it simmer the whole week. Also added was stuff, that while it might not spoil, was on hand and seemed like it would help the flavor
Apples, hamburger, bacon, eggs, vegetables of all types, all sorts of pasta, beer....... Folks coming over to study knew they could eat too and they would bring stuff to add so we wouldn't run out of food.
The engineering types kept the stove from burning the place down and the biology majors made sure it didn't turn into a bacteria farm and make us sick... -
Tonight....skinless, boneless thighs marinated and baked. Brown rice with a can of the tomatoe/jalepeno's and roasted broccoli.
Lunch (work at home). Baked cod and roasted brussel sprouts with balsamic vinegar, a little olive oil, salt and pepper.
After typing this I am hungry.
-
I have to confess we still have ramen noodles! I saute sliced carrots with onion and coarsely chopped cabbage. I cook the ramen noodles but when they are done I drain off the water and then sprinkle the spice packet in and toss the noodles. I pour the noodles into the pan with the vegetables and add a little soy sauce and hot sauce. We usually have potstickers and a dipping sauce of soy sauce with honey and chopped scallions mixed in. If my DH is carbo-loading (distance runner) I will also have some fried rice! It is a naughty meal but so yummy!
-
Eric- I am sorry but YUCK! lol!!
We just ate lots of spaghetti and eggs if I remember right- oh and lots of lettuce tomato and cheese sandwiches. I may have been poor and ate strange food and only probably once a day- but damn I looked good! Hahaha! I was skinny!
Belinda- Dinner sounds delish and I am impressed withyour lunch! I am almost always home too- I had a ham and cheese sandwich

Dinner tonight is the patty melts. I made the fried chicken last night with some sauteed zucchini and squash with some of the left over shells from the night before. So basically I don't have to cook tonight as I know DH will take over the patty melt cooking and construction

-
A lot of spices were added along the way...maybe that's why it tasted OK...sort of like the Tobasco sauce in the MREs. :-)
Eric -
Susan- Oh I thought that was a word for your dh ha! Well, I hope you will be around for many, many more years. :-))
Eric- I have to agree with Laurie but have to admit the cheese puffs wrapped in bacon sounds interesting lol
Belinda- what a nice lunch!
I use to eat mayo/ mustard sandwiches with nothing else sounds gross now HaHa!
It is 11 am and sitting in my room I'm too tired to go to the pool today I have done so much walking my feet hurt, I got up early and put the lei in the ocean in memory of apple and said prayers for you all. But think I will stay in the rest of the day. Dh told me he called to change our tickets from the 20th to the17th but the cost is about 500 dollars wow that is really ridiculous
So guess we are staying until next Sunday I have been having fun but I can't believe I'm saying this but ready to go home. Especially since most people don't know we are here and I don't like fibbing to them where we are.they think chuck is having long dr appointments in Portland lol.
Have a great day everyone! -
Oven-fried catfish fillets (not actually fried, of course, but breaded and crispy) and fresh green beans with fingerling potatoes. Dh will mix up a tartar sauce.
I've never had ramen noodles. Am I deprived?
I lived in dorms in college and ate in the cafeteria, but my roommate's parents had a small supermarket. She brought food for snacks and introduced me to drinking hot tea. Sadly she died young of a brain aneurysm (sp?). Oh my goodness, the weatherman is actually promising the return of sunshine by Thursday. It has been rainy and gloomy for days and days.
-
LOL Debbie is that like leaving home, change your address and not tell your children where you are? Ha ha I always threatened my children that I would do that. Moveyour chair outside and soak up some sun while you read a book...trust me...you will miss that sun when you get home.
Husband called and said he was sick, running a fever and has a sore throat. Puttin on the chicken soup for him (if he has any sense to leave work and get his butt home) He may be catching what I had (have)
-
Carrie, I think I caught what you have and chicken soup sounds good to me, but I don't have the energy to fix it. But I have ramen noodles, which I love! Unfortunately, DH doesn't share my enthusiasm.
I think I can manage a fritatta for dinner but that's about my limit. If DH wants a salad, he'll have to make it. I feel like my face is filled with lead :-(
Carole, your catfish sounds delish too. DH doesn't share my enthusiasm for that either. -
Nancy/Carrie/Susan- well everybody! I hope you feel better! This cold that is going around is horrible. I have been bad skipping my antibiotics as it makes my belly yucky and as soon as I skip my ears hurt and my equilibrium is off and I feel horrible. Crazy flu strains out there!
-
Need to learn to make a frittata. I just love eggs in any form.
-
chilli in the crock pot - I totally forgot how working takes hours out of my day. Still the crock pot is getting used again.
Debbie: enjoy the rest of your time away. A story from my Dad when he was in National Service. His Mum moved and forgot to tell him.
They were reunited soon after.Hope everyone feels well soon.
-
Debbie,
$500 to change your tickets is crazy! While I know that feeling of just wanting to get home I can think of worst places to be stuck...lol! Sounds like you have been really busy thus far maybe change things up a bit for the next few days and just relax... Wake up whenever and go to bed whenever with a whole bunch of nothing in between! There's something very healing about taking a day or two and doing absolutely nothing...lol
Deborye,
Love your new avatar photo! You look so pretty and is that a fascinator I see on your head?
Belinda, I am an egg person too and can't think of a way that I don't like them except raw... or also soft-boiled... Aside from those two, I'm good to go!
Tazzy, Love chili and the crockpot saved me when I was working... So nice to come home to a meal already made!
Tonight was Chicken Cacciatore and it came out mighty good if I do say so myself..lol! -
Wow, that virus is travelling everywhere...hope you all feel better soon!
And Laurie, MaMa Lacey suggests that you take your meds with milk or yogurt or other gentle food to help your stomach tolerate it. I know that yucky feeling, myself, but I'm worried that if you don't get your full consistent dose, that damn bacteria that is taking its toll on you this year will just get stronger....and you will be one sick gal. Good luck!
The huge window that we are having replaced in our breakfast area was supposed to take one day....so far it has taken two and the builder is coming back tomorrow....hopefully to finish! We were lucky that it was 60 degrees out yesterday when we were totally open to the elements, but back to the cold today, so I felt badly for the guys out there hammering.
The state of our kitchen surfaces is typical of construction thin layers of soot and plaster everywhere.....so not too much creative cooking going on. Good thing I made a beef stew on Sunday. We had that tonight with orzo rice pilaf and a kale salad with cranberries and almonds. I was dying to share that meal, so made a duplicate for my neighor who is just getting back from one of her many nursing missions to Haiti.
Sending healing thoughts to all.... -
Kay iknow I'm feeling perry ssceecrery is that even a word? Hehe oh Lord love me some drinking lol in not sure I'd my words or the correct captions is so I will leave it for now heheh!

Ok yea I'm drinking no surprise but I still wouldn't say those darn things lol
Seaside- if you think about it it will cost us a hell a lot more than 500 to stay those xrra days and I will make sure they so lol
Tazzy- funny but maybe not, want nice he didn't tell you . Men... I told dh I need xrra stuff like female stuff to stay here he says why? I said so you want me to pee my pants ( yes I use pads) all the female things I need I have run out of since we are staying longer also my inhalers and Nicolette gum , oh well he just has to pay for them, not gonna worry. Laurie what was it you said about liquid courage lool -
Oh also dh keeps rolling over in bed and looking at me I'm likenWHat? He says I'm being noisy jimaney crickets I havt moved what's his problem geesh why ya gotta be so mean? Love that song too!
Did I tell you my aunt Claudia passed away (dads sister) so took 2 leis down and put then in the ocean thus moening I took pictures but all I got was a bunch of sparkling stuff coming odd the water and couldn't see them but took pis anyway will post them somehow -
Made a chicken pot pie, but as we cannot eat wheat anymore I made the crust using rice flour, butter and just a smidge of tapioca flour. It turned out really well.
-
Debbie- LOL! Sounds like you were having one hack of a night!
Snowing here today. Most schools were closed but not DS's pre school. I made the decision to keep him home anyway. We have had a typical quiet winter day. Made banana bread, stripped the beds and did layndry and headed out for some sledding. We had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch. I made my grilled cheese with pumpernickel bread and Swiss cheese and American cheese. I am stuffed and it was wonderful.
Now to get those boys to snuggle with me and take a nap!!
