I have been lurking for awhile. I was diagnosed shortly after Benny and followed her posts from the beginning as I had a lot of the same thoughts. There is a thread for winter rads that I have been following through my rad journey. This group is very inspiring and definitely warriors as chemo sounds much harder than rads.
This has been my rad journey...35 treatments-27 full breast and 8 boost which is where they just eradicate your surgery area. You start off with your first appointment with them taking X-rays for positioning and getting tattoos. I got 5 - 3 down my breast bone on 1 on each side of stomach area. They don't hurt and seriously very small. They are smaller than freckles and sometimes I wonder how they see them as I don't notice them at all. The RO and the physicist use the X-rays to figure out the angles of the rads and set the computer. The machine won't turn on if you are not exact on the machine.
I have 2 angles that are radiated. It takes less than a minute on each angle. The massiveness of the machine moving on top of me bothers me the most. You don't feel anything and it doesn't hurt. It took about 11 treatments for me to notice a skin reaction. I used pure aloe Vera (I bought mine at Whole Foods but others found it at Walmart) until my skin was worse. Then I switched to radiogel and biotine that was prescribed by my doctor. My underarm, nipple and underneath my breast are my most sensitive. My RO switched me to my boosts at 20 treatments to give these areas a break and then I will finish with the full breast rad. I see the doctor every week and they monitor the skin very closely. If it is between doctor visits, you just have a let them know that it is uncomfortable and they will give you a break on Friday or Monday to give you a longer weekend to heal. Also, the techs have this tape you can put on your bad areas that protect it better.
I do get tired about 45 minutes after treatment. I go at the end of the day so I don't feel tired at work. I was able to choose my time and they were quite a few options. if you time isn't available, they will let you switch when it opens up. the techs are extremely compassionate and nice to you! It isn't a sleepy tired just more exhaustion. I'm sure it isn't like chemo tired. The daily treatments get boring but I live close to the treatment center so the drive isn't bad.
It is annoying not to shave my underarm. My hair has not fallen out. This is probably a chemo benefit as you won't have to deal with this. You can't wear deordorant as it has aluminum in it. They give you a salt crystal but It doesn't work very well. I have chosen to just deal with it and I smell everyday
I only have 7 to go. Hopefully, my skin will hold up then I start tamoxifen. My oncologist didn't want to start until after rads so that if there were se we would know if it was the rads or tamoxifen. Some people are doing both at the same time. I hope this helps and good luck with your journeys!
Laura -
Benny, radiation was a breeze. If you can throw around 32 haybales while on chemo, you will certainly be able to function normally. The tattoos did not hurt at all; I felt nothing. As far as the 'rad' fatique, I never really experienced that. I did sleep longer hours though during rads, and took long naps during the day now and then, but that was it. Waited for the fatique crash, but it never came. The BC Cancer agency where I went for rads was very considerate, and worked with me to find the appointment times which suited me best. I had to stay in Victoria for the five weeks of rads. On Mondays they gave me the last appointment of the day so that I still had the whole morning at home before I had to drive down the island to Victoria, and on Fridays they gave me the first one of the day so that I could get away and be home for the weekend by lunch time. Once again, it is so good to see you doing so well. Keep it up now!
Laura, welcome here, and best wishes. You are almost done!
-
Hi ladies-
Glad everyone seems to be hanging in there!!! Went out with a girlfriend from college last night it was so good to be out even tho we did talk about BC as her mom had it too! Hands are starting to peel so strange.
Edi-
One of my favorite meals is shepards pie, tho little guy doesn't like mashed potatoes. Who doesn't like mashed potatoes????
Will find out this weekmifvi have to do rads. Thanks for ll the info on it!!!
Benny-
So glad things are going well don't over do it girlfriend !!
Beacub- dear do can't imagine hitting a moose!!
Trail- I am all ready to watch the Australian open!!!
Nihahi, Lesley glad to hear from u!!
Hugs to u all!! Enjoy the day!!! -
Benny, nuts and bolts sounds gorgeous, bu one portion and I would be sitting on a cloud clutching a harp lol.
I can only take the gaviscon liquid, pink and thick but you can feel it coating pipes on way down. Take the biggest dose going to bed, magic !! Then after eating a meal. Still not being silly but soft stuff fine.
Sorry you are knackered today but rest and rebuild, know its hard but you must try and pace yourself on good days, you have felt so yuk for so long ,understand why you throw yourself into doing things but maybe same things spread over two days ?
I do feel so much better but it floors me if I get carried away
Get some tasty fuel in ready for next battle. x
Nihahi, lack of sleep is so horrible hope you rest better tonight. Your DH could be my DH twin, we have sat nav ( which I HATE ) and he even argues with that !
Hope your snow was moderate, ours is due through the night so will be using shovel first thing. Luckily DH on late shift so not too bad, I am going nowhere, just catching up on all the things I should have done last week.
Have you a balaclava to protect your nose while whizzing about, only mouth and eyes exposed.
Will your nose always be so sensitive or just for a while ?
Have fun tomorrow, look out for Mooses lol xCarla, are you still ok ? x
Bevlee, We are all concerned about you Hope you are ok x
Shepherd's pie is calling me and for once I am hungry.
Laters Edi x

Loving and Liefie, Rads info taken on board by me for one, sure Benny too, you are all wonderful. Many thanks xx
-
Thinking of you Traii as I'm sitting here watching the Australian Open. I love tennis - used to play it lots, but probably going to be a spectator from now on. Sounds like you might be having a bit of a break from the super hot weather for a day at least!
Edi..another translation needed....! What the heck is quorn and sweetheart cabbage?????? I'm telling you, it's a different language! The nose sensitivity is (hopefully) temporary, from the surgery a few months ago. They had to shift around a bunch of skin, so the nerves are pretty screwed up, but it is getting better. Balaclava's give me panic attacks, plus make my head too hot. So I'm stuck with using a "muff" around my face, which really isn't much better and makes my sunglasses fog up!!!!!!! Pfft. small potatoes to what we have gone/going through!!!! It is supposed to be warmer tomorrow, so the plan is to head out again for a "shoe". I go with a great friend, who puts up with my whining.
Dakota, college friends are great aren't they? Makes you realize how long friendships can last.
Hubby managed to get things assembled with only a few "take it apart and do it the way it tells you to" incidents. Better than usual I must admit. I'm not thrilled about the nail heads poking through where he went out of bounds a bit, but, I've learned to creatively place things around those scenarios. He really does try, just not a handy kind of guy! He did make me proud.....changed 2 lightbulbs all by himself with no electrocution problems!
Websister..how is your Mom doing, and, how are YOU doing?
Back to tennis, hi to everyone I haven't mentioned.
-
Thanks Nihahi, sun out today (as you can see from Aust Open) but this week there's been forcast of very hot weather Wednesday / Thursday.....(great !!!!
) I love the hot nights (well liked it alot before SLND because now I smother myself in insect repellent...lol) but the days are draining inside with the aircon! )Edi, I'm making Scotch Fillet Steak tonight with mashed pumpkin and potato ( my all time fav...lol) and cabbage, I steam the cabagge and put onion and bacon in it with a lilttle garlic powder.....I love garlic....lol . Ok, what is quorn ??
Dakota, I watch the Aust Open, but hubbys not too keen, I use to go when I was younger, my dad loves the tennis, but I'd rather just sit at home and watch it, I can talk here, there I can't .... lol
Carlads, how's the headaches ? hope you are feeling ok otherwise.
Luvmygoats, my uncle has goats, doesn't breed them but has a few acres so gets them to eat his grass....my DS was intrigued by them the last time that we went there and one didn't take a liking to him and scared him...lol.....
Lifie, deep fried bread !!! hmmm....the only bread thats touched the pan here is if I make french toast...but deep fried as a signature dish ...... amazes me ... lol...much prefer bread with something yummy in it or Bruchetta with onion and fresh basil and tomatoes.....oh with a little drizzle of oil on french bread...I'm making my mouth water as I think about it....lol
Benny, its so easy to over do it when you're feeling good....I did with the CMF regime the first week and then it hit bit so I'm TRYING to learn to slow down a little......so it doesn't catch up with me at the end. Hope you are feeling well and resting
I'm really worried about Bevlee, hope all is ok.
-
morning ladies,
Hope weather not too hot/cold where you are. Got up expecting deep deep snow and guess what ? Met men got it wrong again !! Just wet. That is a relief phew.
Nihahi, Translation coming. Sweetheart cabbage-pointed- hispi cabbage. Gorgeous steamed with black pepper and can be used in stir fries. Quorn fab meat substitiute, very popular here. Made from a mushroom like fungus. Comes in mince form or ready made into burgers sausages or chunks that look just like chicken breast pieces. Cooks quickly in sauce of your choice and is really low in fat. Makes a great bolognaise or shepherds pie and if you like the texture of meat but are trying to cut back on meat products ( we are ) is ideal substitute. I tried soya but yuk, this really does the job.
Think you can get it in the USA.
Glad nose will get better and hope you have a glorious day with your friend.
DH sounds like a sweetheart, at least he has a go. When we were little my Dad would get phone call all times of the day or night to change light bulbs for his friend who was a Doctor for goodness sake. At least they could change the toilet roll lol xTraii, early evening with you according to my world clock. Hope you have a super week off and the arm is ok ?
Tennis reminds me of school too much
my racket was pristine when I left with just a scraped top from hitting the floor instead of the ball.
Will try bit of bacon in my cabbage, sounds tasty. Don't think Quorn ( see above ) is available in Aus.My ED loves it and it really is very nice.
They are back from London this afternoon and have had a ball. GD was trying on princess shoes in the toy dept of Harrods yesterday. Then the only thing she asked for was a bag of marbles.
Just been on trafalgar sq webcam and saw Ed and GD waving to us. xCarla hope you ok ? x
Benny, hope you perked up today x
Dakota, I LOVE mash but one of my GD's almost throws up if she sees it. Hope you have a good week. When your next treatment ? x
Can hear DH clanking around, mugs of tea time, take care everyone xxxx
-
Traii-
I saw its supposed to be 100 for u on Thursday!! Wow. Be careful so jealous u got to go to the open. It's on my bucket list to get to one of the grand slams.
Edi-
My next treatment is onThursday. 2nd taxol. Glad u had only rain.
Nihahi-I will be watching with u when I can!
Every warrior have a great day !!!
Hugs to all!!! -
Morning all,
Traii, I'm thinking you are Edi are fabulous cooks! Your meals make my mouth start drooling in anticipation, only to get pretty disappointed when it realizes it's only a cyber meal!
Edi, glad your snow turned out to be rain, as I don't think you Brits really like dealing with snow, from what I hear. Thanks for the food translations. My friend today is a Brit, and I'm going to have to get further translation on the cabbage from her. "hipsi".....still a mystery. But I can agree that bacon with cabbage is yummy! Works with brussel sprouts too! I've never seen something called quorn in Canada, maybe Benny can educate me on that one.
Hope today is the start of a good week for all.
-
Nihahi - translated Hispi cabbage. What would I do without Google?
-
Good Morning Ladies,
Everyone sounds like they had a good weekend! My SE's weren't too bad. Headaches got much better. Now today I have the mouth soreness.. Only on the tongue.. A little sore throat but not too bad. I can't remember if I told all of you I am a Dental Asst so I am big on the salt and soda rinse, but I have to admit I don't know how much it is helping right now.. I really shouldn't complain because I think I have been very lucky..
Food doesn't taste too good but I am trying to eat.
Traii, are you still on Taxotere or is that one that you are off of now? It seems to really dry everything out!
Edi, didn't I see somewhere in an older post about Lemon drops and fuzzy tongue? My tongue is fuzzy just sore but maybe that would help..
We are having a head shaving party here at my house on January 27th I figure I should be shedding good by then. Hopefully the hair will hang on that long.. All donations going to Susan G Komen... it should be a fun day.
Hope everyone else is doing well..
Love you ladies,
Carla
-
Carla, so glad you are still doing well, sore mouth is unpleasant but I have lemon sweets, actually sherbet lemons which ease the dry yucky sore tongue feeling. I find things do taste different and texture too seems weird. Gone right off bread as like chewing a bath sponge lol.
Sure all this will pass and in the meanwhile I have gone down TWO sizes in slacks that is good, as needed to lose weight, hope it stays off.
As you will have seen I love baking soda and find it really soothing
end of my tongue feels as if it has a spot about to erupt but sure this too will pass.
You are doing great, I find now I crave food with strong flavours, going to have baked beans with cheese grated on the top and maybe bit of garlic.
I was on epirubicin and that does dry everything out, think most chemo's do. Sometimes sit watching tv with tongue in glass of iced water, not a pretty sight lol.
Also found gentle brushing of tongue with the tongue cleaner on the back of toothbrush helps.
Headshaving party fab idea ! May as well raise funds out of what will also make you feel more comfy. Just be gentle with your hair in the meantime then it will last .xLuvmy, google rocks !! I gently cook a chopped onion in a little butter, when going clear add a couple fresh tomatoes ,quartered, cook for a few minutes. Then add sweetheart cabbage cut up quite small and freshly washed so drops of water still on it. Put lid on pan and cook on gentle heat until cabbage softens. Take off lid, add ground black pepper and stir all together. ( add cooked bacon if you want ) sooo tasty. All cooks without any extra liquid just the water off the cabbage.x
Nihahi, Brits and snow !! don't go there, we have the worse systems in the world, a few years ago all the powers that be ran out of grit for the roads, now that was bad.Shops also sold out first day it fell.
DH has lots of it in his shed which we bought when stocks came in after it all melted.
My uncle lived in Toronto and on his visits here used to fascinate us with how it doesn't stop everything there. If it costs money here, they won't do it, simple. We may do good pomp and ceremony and olympics but looking after our roads in bad weather NO.xGonna cook me up a mess of beans, love and hugs to you all xx
-
Carlads-
Glad things r going well !!!
Edi- definately glad for no snow then!...lol -
Edi, I'll have to try your onion-tomato-cabbage dish. It sounds delicious. The baked beans, cheese and garlic also sounds wonderful. I am so hungry now!
Tonight I'm making salmon in the oven with lemon and a little butter, something with leeks, onions and spinach, and beet salad. A little non-fat sour cream should round everything off nicely.
It was so cold here this weekend, so DH and I hunkered down, watched TV, and ate lots. Of chocolate. We did take the dog for a walk both days and came home almost frozen despite warm jackets, gloves, scarves etc. Which in turn sparked more eating . . . This morning we have sunshine, and it is actually beautiful outside. Already took the dog for a quick walk/run, then went to the gym for a 45 min. strength training workout. Nothing like a guilty conscience to get you moving - LOL.
All of you still doing chemo, you are such a lovely, positive bunch of women! You hardly ever complain, and just endure the treatment so stoically. The sense of humour on this forum is also something extraordinary; no sorry-for-yourself victim mentality here, just warriors pushing forward, and doing what they have to do. What a joy you all are!
-
Liefie, please let me know if you try the recipe. I adore salmon with spring onions and slivers of fresh ginger, recipe given me by chinese friend all wrapped in foil with teeny bit of butter.Yours sounds gorgeous will have to try that.
DH and I did same as you for most of weekend, lovely, just a little shopping thrown in but at least not as chilly here.
Chemo is a long journey but watching how younger women on here cope fills me with awe.
We are warriors and will get there and laughter is the best medicine, that and all the advice and support from you and other sisters keeps us all going.Love you xx
-
Ladies, I'm at work so short and sweet I shall leave this for you to read, thoughts ???
http://www.madisonmag.com.au/life/can-wine-increase-breast-cancer-survival.htm
Hope you all have a great day, enjoy the sunshine ( 29 degrees here and sunny) enjoy the tennis is you're watching from sunny Melbourne xx love and hugs Traii xx
-
This article is very interesting, Traii. It's a pity that I can't drink any alcohol at all. It makes me really sick.
-
I thought it was interesting too Lifie, I don't usually drink but I might start....lol

-
Here in the US they say drinking alcohol daily increases risk - go figure.....
-
Back from a successful snowshoe. Mild temps today so both the nose and shoulders were happy.
I love the recipes being written up here. Can't wait to try some. Traii.....waiting anxiously for some more info on your scotch steak!

I am in awe of how incredible you ladies with young kids AND JOBS are doing through all this. I had a 1 year old and an 8 year old while I was going through chemo, and don't remember being nearly as busy as you all have been!!!!
Carlads - a head shave....you are just rising to the challenge of bc in buckets my dear! Shows how much fight you have in you. You are definitely a champion!
Think I'll now pour myself a glass of wine while I settle down to watch some more tennis. Good night to you all.
-
ahh work done for today and day off tomorrow to enjoy sunshine with my little mr. munchkin!! Spaghetti Bolognase tonight with garlic bread...nice, quick and easy...

Carlads, go girl shaving your hair.......
will be thinking on the 27th Jan . I'm not on Taxotere anymore, new regime is CMF...I have 4 infusions left but 2 cycles...should finish up on the 15th March , 3 days after my birthday
I just finished the pills today after 14 days so looking forward to the next 14 days of pills and infusion free.....yipppppppeeeeeeee ! hot weather and fun times
Nihahi, Scotch fillet steak is just the cut of the meat ... its so yummy and tender, its beef. I just fried it with garlic powder (put extra chilli on the hubbies one...lol) and made some mushroom gravy sauce yummo..... Hope you enjoy the tennis today.....see the sun....pretend you are here, it will do good for your shoulders and nose (which I'm glad you didn't have snow so shoulders were good to you
)Lifie, I was told by my onc earlier on that one wine won't hurt but reading that article..hmmm you just don't know anymore.....what to eat, what to drink, what to do???
-
Hi everyone, I'm trying to catch up on all the posts - sounds like everyone is doing well. This won't be long but I saw my oncologist this a.m., passed the MUGA scan so able to continue with the Herceptin infusions for another three months until the next scan. Hemoglobin was low, good to know that was why I have been short of breath and tired, she says that will probably take about three months to get back to normal.
Mom is making good progress, I have a feeling they will send her back to her lodge either this week or next, I hope that's it for a bit, for both our sakes
Dakota - in your pockets on Thursday
Carlads - glad you are doing well, please post pictures of your headshaving for us
Benny - are you getting ready for Wednesday?
Edi - I think we got your snow here today, now tomorrow it is supposed to go above zero so we will really need our windshield washer fluid
Traii - hope you are able to go to your aunt's pool again to stay cool
Bearcub - counting down those rads
Liefie - glad you had some sunshine today, sounds like a wonderful way to spend your weekend and today
Off to bed, supposed to take my tamoxifen for the first time this evening - not quite sure what to expect, the hot flashes in the night have already been pretty intense
Take care everyone -
Good News Websister that you are able to continue with the Hercepin.......Interesting to know about that Hemoglobin I've been a little short of breath at times and have all funny thoughts in my head !! I will look into that when I see the doc, I know it can be a SE still from Taxotere so right now aches and pains and shortness of breath etc can be from a bit of this and a bit of that ...... arghhh!
Fingers crossed that your mum can go back to the lodge and then its upwards for the both of you.

Lol re Hot Flashes.....I am getting them and I'm sounding like mum so I can compare notes with her......lol......mine comes around 10pm and wow.....I just want to strip.....!! (I'm on Zoladex injections to supress ovaries thus my flashes)!!
Good night Websister, have a good sleep and sweet dreams xx
-
Websister great news that you can continue with the herceptin. I get my 3 rd on Wednesday. Our weather is warming up this week to plus 5, seems a bit odd for January, but I won't complain. It will be a slushy week! Glad your mom is doing well.
Traii and Nihahi enjoy the tennis, I have never been a huge fan, tried it as a teenager, pulled a muscle and that was my experience....never picked up a racket after that.
Dakota and Carlads hope your SE are tolerable, Benny good luck on Wednesday.
Edi I get a good laugh reading your posts, you girls sound like chefs..makes me hungry.
Keep the snow shovel handy.....you may need it still..
Liefie you are so lucky to be living on the island, I am assuming Vancouver island since you head off to Victoria for treatment. I met my DH on the island many years ago.
I thought I would point out I have been on tamoxifen since Dec, 5th, and haven't noticed any SE .....touch wood..I did have lots of night sweats while doing AC.
I did #8/16 rads today half way, skin is still looking pretty good..I will be very happy when it's over, I have met some very nice people though in the waiting room.
Well everyone have a safe Tuesday -
Good to hear from you websister. Sounds like you're doing well, too. Tamoxifen hot flashes, yeah, been there, but compared to side effects from other chemo, certainly not the worst thing to go through. The sleep interruption can add to the fatigue levels, which make it even more important to not try to do the super woman thing. I actually had the fun of going through menopause twice, once from the tamoxifen, then later, the "natural" version. Fun, eh! Re: the wine theories. I figure if you live long enough, eventually you'll hear what used to be bad is now good, or what was good is now bad just regarding just about everything you have ever consumed. I figure that moderation and balance is your best bet for everything in life, food and drink included. Just my theory, no backup proof.
Hope the flu and norovirus in Calgary doesn't keep Mom out of the lodge. I can identify with how getting her "settled" again will be a good thing for both of you.
Traii, thank goodness for the Aussie open on tv. Between hubby's "sound effects" and the alien on my chest, sleep is hard to come by again tonight. At least I have something to help pass the time!
Benny - you're quiet again, hope you're just "getting on with life".
I do understand the importance of putting this whole "thing" on the back burner sometimes. Eventually, it'll happen without such an effort, then we'll all just be cyber-sisters! I hope that we all stay in touch as time goes on.
-
Nihahi-glad it was mild for u. Hope the wine was good !!
Traii- yay for u a day off! What is spaghetti bolognese. I need easy
stay cool I hear its going to get hot hot hot!!
Web sister- yay u passed ur mugs!!! Thanks for the pocket party. I have people who have offered to come but it's so stressful having to entertain people for 7 hours anyone else feel that way??
Beat cub- warm in January is weird. It was 51 here yesterday. January thaw I guess
Benny- where r u??
Lesley , luck my, carlads hope u all are well !!
Hugs
-
Gosh you sisters have been busy.
All se's stopped with me and feel amazing.Went for coffee with my BC buddy did a bit of grocery shopping, got in car and turned key. NOTHING !! thank goodness DH was still at home before late shift, after half an hour trying to jump start had to do that put in second gear, he then pushes me dead fast, phew, foot off clutch and here we goooo. It is in the local garage where they have fitted it with brand new battery. No way can I have that happen again and this cold weather doesn't help.
DH goes out to his car to leave for work later and elderley gentleman over the road has the same thing happen ! Over goes my hero and gets another car going too.Traii, love the drink link.
-
Traii
I enjoyed a glass of wine last night more than I have in the last three years since my diagnosis! Savored every drop! Thanks!
You ladies are so inspirational. I had such a love hate relationship with food during chemo, your recipe swapping and helpful hints are so awesome to share with one another. I had a gread group. April 2009 Chemo starters and there are 10 of us that STILL chat we were just saying this morning that we cannot believe this March will be 4 years since diagnosis for most of us. These friendships you are all forming will last, sharing this experience creates a bond that few understand.
Nihahi, I am 4 and a half weeks out from my last surgery. No more drains, still in compression, but hoping to go on my own short snowshoe in a week and a half. There is all this lovely snow in the Sierras, although we have had bitter cold, below zero and single digits which is uncharachteristic for us, so I convince myself I would not enjoy it that cold anyway
I know I will not get far, but everytime I pass my poor snowshoes and poles I know they are begging to get out there! I had surgery last January and we had no snow in Nov or Dec so I did not go at all last year and it IS one of my favorite activities.I don't pipe in all the time but I read every word of all of your posts and think of all of you gals every day and what you are pushing through. SO proud of all of you, you are doing it!!!!!
-
Edi- so glad u got the car going!!!! Ur so lucky to have such a DH!!! And to help the neighbor too!!!
