After my stage II and before IIb, my doctor said to get in as good shape as I could. Apparently, easier said then done. When I went to my MO last month, he said I had lost 5 pounds since June, but my clothes don't agree... I am about 37 pounds above my ideal perfect weight. I don't have expectations to be that weight now, but if I could lose 25-30 pounds I'd be very happy. So with only 2.5 weeks til my stage IIb, I am hoping to drop 5 pounds, and then go from there. If by fall I have lost the weight and I need a little revision I will cross that bridge then. I think it will be fine though. My fat is well distributed now, and if I lose, I will lose all over. So no matter what, it will all work out I am sure.
-
I'd wait on the DIEP until after the trip, as well.
I am trying to have all my surgery in one year due to the insurance. DIEP for Feb14th, I'm thinking stage II in July. The doctor told me if I lost another 20 or so lbs between the stage 1 & 2, he'd tighten my up again. So that is incentive for me to get back to my regular size!
-
Ronnie, Good to hear from you. Hope you are having minimal SEs from treatment! I'm glad things are sounding encouraging. I am mailing you the blanket soon! hang in there.
-
Yes -- one of the benefits of losing the weight prior to stage 2 is that the PS can tighten up loose torso and breast skin.
But, as Beckers says -- the important thing is to get through your surgeries and be as healthy as you can, and cross the bridges as they come. The #1 health reason to lose the weight ASAP is that excess fat creates estrogen. The so that is the real goal -- to be as healthy as possible as soon as possible and not create extra food for any remaining cancer. The other reasons to lose prior to stage 2 are just for best cosmetic results. Personally, I had NEVER considered any sort of plastic surgery prior to this dx... but now that I find myself having to have PS -- I would very much like to have it assist me in achieving the healthy-looking body of my dreams... just as much as it can!
And using my stage 2 surgery as a deadline for weight loss is a wonderful incentive to lose the weight that I have always wanted to (and I certainly need to for health reasons) -- and it is helping -- because I am a deadline-based person!

Can they also tighten things up at a 2b? I only have 5 1/2 weeks. Hoping to get at least 5 off before 2a, then 10-15 after. I don't want to delay surgery at this point as it is all set up.
Thanks for the info. -
Everyone's stage 2 (2b, 3 etc) is different... best thing is to talk to your doc... or put in a (free) call to the nurse.
-
I will email them this week. Looks like mine will be late march due to hubbys schedule. That puts me at six months between anyway. Going to new PT tomorrow. Going to start some US to that scar tissue in radiated breast. Going to get them to do some massage to armpit area. I just have this mild nagging pain tightness ti breast and arm pit area. We have new LE person in area, but I couldnt get her on phone. She is occupational therapist anyway. She probably doesnt do massage. And I probably know more about LE than she does
Been going to gym. Can do 30 min on the bouncy eliptical -
Hi everyone! I don't usually post on here often, but I want to ask those of you who have already had your DIEP surgeries for some advice. I am scheduled for DIEP on 2/4 and have yet to get any of the post surgical garments that I may need. Can any of you recommend a good post-surgical camisole? Also, it would be helpful to know what I may need to take with me to the hospital as well as what will be needed when I return home. I probably have a ton of questions, but am blank at the moment, so I figured I would start with the most basic ones.
-
Sonyalee - there is a great packing list on the NOLA in September thread. Before purchasing any post surgical garments, talk with your PS to see what you need. Different PS have different approaches. I know some women who didn't have compression (abdominal), my doctor prefers it and a garment was provided (I woke up in it). Most seem to use a simple, light hook-front bra. As time progressed, I moved to other soft (non-wire) bras and am now wearing a Coobie Bra. Just ring up the PS office and speak to the nurse as she should be able to tell you exactly what you will need in the way of garments.
-
Thanks MartyJ, my PS had wrote a prescription for me to get a post-surgical cami fitting at Nordstroms, but there isn't one in my area without driving at least 3 hours. He didn't say anything regarding compression, so I'm not sure about that. I will check out the packing list on the NOLA thread, thanks again for telling me about it. The closer my date gets the more nervous I get, so I've been scrolling through the threads trying to learn as much as I can.
-
Sonyalee... Maybe you could measure yourself and order the cami online?? I didn't wear a cami, but rather I wore a bra as Marty described... As Marty said all doctors have their own thing.
-
Thanks bdavis, I was hoping to be able to order something online. I think I would rather wear a soft bra than a cami. I have a couple of post-surgical bras that my BS recommended for after mastectomy surgery. They are soft, no wires and zip in the front, I wonder if they would be suffice minus the breast form?
-
Well... you can certainly ask your PS.. In NOLA they only use bras. So if you want to wear the bra only, just ask if its ok.

Just popping in to ask if anyone out there had chemo AFTER diep? I had my first treatment last week and had a burning sensation on both sides, most prevelant under the port. Have a call into my ps but I have a feeling he may be researching it to as I haven't heard back yet. I know protocol is to go through treatment first...just wondering if anyone else has gone through a diagnosis afterwards...and pray that none of my sisters do!!! Thinking of you all...wish you love & healing!
-
Ronnie, glad to "see" ya
I cannot comment on chemo, however, we are only weeks apart on when we had our surgeries.
I have noticed some feeling along the side of my breast especially where the "stick" part of my skin paddle is.
It radiates toward my new nipple which is awesome
That is really all of the feeling I expect. Surface/skin sensations but weird and nice all in the same sense.
I also noticed that the total numbness in my snb site is slowly easing and having more feeling there too.
I have nothing else to offer, but thought that the timing of our surgeries and having some sensations was worth throwing out there.
Wishing you well and great comfort during your treatments with few SEs.
XOXOXOX

Hi Ronnie!!!!!!!! ((healing hugs))
-
Hi Ronnie. ... I don't think most have chemo first.... But certainly some do. I had a lumpectomy and then chemo and then decided to have MX. They tried to remove my port during surgery but had trouble and left it for my radiologist to take it out. In the meantime it got a bacterial infection and really hurt. So just make sure the port is fine.
-
I felt it Beckers!!! My ps was out of town at a conference so got to me a couple days later. He said many patients have had chemo after diep and that there's no fear of failure...THANK GOD! He said that what I was probably experiencing was either neuropathy or nerve tingling, which is very common during the treatment. I was so relieved and experienced almost no tingling with the 2nd treatment. Also had no side effects...so it's been a happy week! Praying that all of my diep sisters are healing well. I feel so good...happy day to all!!!
-
Ronnie, so good to hear you're tolerating your treatments well! I'm hoping its doing the job and you get good news at your next scan. Have you healed up well from stage 2 now?
Rebecca, hope you are well too! Looks like several of us will be headed for stage 2 soon.
I'm 3 months out on Thursday and we'll celebrate my little one's 4th birthday too! My darn abs (and boobs) are still swollen after an active day but my energy is great. It's been quiet on here lately but if any of you have an idea of when the swelling finally stops, it would be great to know. I can also ask at f/u in a couple of wks.
Hope the quiet means everyone is doing well!! -
Cg1234...I have healed so well from stage 2...of course sometimes I think it's because it's not my primary focus right now, but I think that if I would've had this diagnosis before stage 2, and not had it done, I would've been very sad. For me, Stage 2 did just what it was supposed to do so I'm hoping the same for all of you getting there! The few hardened areas were taken out, or softened up, the fat under my armpits is gone, the dog ears gone...just very happy. I still have a bit of a bulge in the pelvic area but it's lessened. I have to say that since I've really been watching what I eat, have pretty much given up any dessert/sugar type foods, mochas, focusing on what's good for my liver...and that's pretty much veggies, fruits, healthy proteins, etc, I've lost about 12 pounds and my contour looks even better. Praying I have lots of years to enjoy my new toobs...port and all. Love to all of you!

CG--Definitely ask for the anti-nausea patch. They put mine on before I even was wheeled into surgery. (I am very prone to nausea, although don't vomit.) I had to take a very strong antibiotic when home, and it made me so sick I couldn't move or feel like eating. Finally, after many phone calls, the PS nurse approved an anti-nausea med (expensive) that I believe is the type people take when having chemo. That helped immediately. So don't let nausea, especially vomiting, go unchallenged. Let them know up front that is an issue for you.
As for no stage 2, my shape (DIEP and lift) is fine and I wouldn't need to tweak anything. I do have some hard necrosis (this is not unusual) that I want removed, plus the nipple will be built from the extra skin where it used to be. So I will be having outpatient surgery for that at the end of Feb. But nipple creating and tatooing (after the nipple heals) may be the only stage you may need.
-
Good to hear you are doing so well Ronnie with minimal SE's. Wow, you lost 12 lbs? That's awesome! I'm jealous.
Cg1234 - I had stage 2 in Dec. I can see that my body absorbed some of the fat grafting in left side. I'm taking a good long break from surgery though. I almost forget I even had surgery. Recovery is nothing compared to stage 1.
Hope everyone is doing well. -
I'm happy you three have done well! Ronnie, I'm glad you got through stage 2 as well (even with the port now). Your positive attitude and lifestyle are wonderful! I agree with Rebecca...12 lbs is great!
Chris, I'm with you on the patch and zofran. Despite being under for so long with stage 1, it's the first time the anesthesiologists were able to help me avoid post-op n/v. What a difference!
Rebecca, do you plan to eventually go back for more fat grafting? I can't remember if you did nipples too or planned for 3d tattoos. I'm hoping some fat grafting will do the trick for me since I have one side that's flatter. I totally understand wanting a break after stage 2. It's been a long year for you but great you've recovered well!
Thanks for the responses! I'm looking forward to celebrating today...3 months post-diep, dh and I had our first date 27 yrs ago, and my son turns 4. I was up late making a requested strawberry batman cake last night. Kneading homemade fondant (my first time) wore me out, but the cake is cute! Let's hope it tastes good! -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sweet 4 year old!!! Life doesn't get much better than that! AND Happy Anniversary of "finding" each other, Cindy! A blessed day!!!
-
Aww, it was a nice day, and the cake was good! :-)
-
Glad to hear...I know you're an awesome Mom
-
Cg1234, I would be open to another fat grafting. It's looking better though. It's so interesting. I had nipple sparing. They may be done. Time will tell.
-
Crap my email has been hacked. I cant get back in it. I still have pictures on there that i have neen emailing back and forth to prma on there. Crap
-
Rebecca, that's great! Hope you end up happy with the results.
Fran, sorry about the email problems, especially if you had pics in there! How are you otherwise and when is stage 2 for you?
Ronniekay, I hope you're still feeling good this week. You're sweet, and I hope you're enjoying those cute grand kids every chance you get! -
I think my hubby gave me his ick. My eyesburn, back hurts, sneezing, tickly throat, ntired. I am better oatient than he is. He can barely swallow pill, and wont drink his fluids.
My second part is first of april. Awaiting insurance approval.
Does anyone know what we can take when we get cold. No morebenadryl with tamox. I loved that drug.
Been lurking lately. This will be my last week of pt. This guy ismuchbetter than last one. He doesnt spend long time on arm, but at endhe stretches my arm back while stablizing my ribs. It hurts but it feelsgood.
