    A Hayley Mills movie was one of the few occasions that my mother would waive our usual early bed time.  That and Topo Gigo or The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show.

    Shampoo and chewing gum - two of my big memories. I think it was called Freshen Up or maybe Squirt gum with the liquid center that squirted when you chewed it. There was a rumor at my jr. high that the center was embalming fluid! Also Lemon Up shampoo with the lemon on top of it. There was another shampoo called Dawn, I think. It settled into layers that looked like a sunrise and you shook it before you used it to mix it all up. And of course, Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific! Oh, and Bonne Bell lip smackers and Smitty cologne!

    Jillejo - I did a doubletake a couple days ago.  Saw Freshen Up gum in convenience store.  Kinda scared me since I, too, hadn't seen it in ages but then I wasn't looking for it.  Looked real close at the expiration date on the item I bought!  They still make Lip Smackers; see them at WalMart, I think.  My 25 y.o. DD collected them.  I LOVED the old Herbal Essence shampoo.  Don't remember Smitty cologne.  Saw Windsong cologne the other day.

    Although we may have already gone over some of these, the Breck Girls and Prell that was so think a pearl took a long time to sink when dropped into it.  I remember the glass shampoo bottles, and none of them were the big 16-32 oz size.

    I rememeber those gums as well.

    Chef Boyardee has brought back one of their old commercials recently, but I was thinking there was a jingle for Chef Boyardee.  I went to YouTube and saw the Beef-a-roni commercials.  Remember the one where the children were running through the streets of possibly an Italian city, to sit down at a long table and eating Beef-a-roni?

    The label on Herbal Esence (what a great smell!) reminded me of a magazine ad for Cornsilk powder make up, that had Cybill Shephard standing in a cornfield, wearing just her long blonde hair (and supposedly she had the make up on also.)

    NativeMaine...I LOVED Topo Gigio!!  Thanks for the memory!  And, I remember the "British Invasion" on Ed Sullivan...Cried for Davey Jones and Paul McCartney!

    I was just thinking about cigarette machines.  I haven't seen one in quite a while.  They used to be everywhere (not just bars) like in the supermarket and in the lobbies of hospitals.  As a kid, it was fun to try and pull or turn all the knobs.

                                                                         

    Which reminds me that even gumball machines are few and far between in the new millenium, although they were still in the stores when my kids were little in the 1990's.  They are starting to seem kind of vintage now.

    Elimar - I live in a small town.  Think the grocery still has gumball machines but then have no small children begging me for my loose change.

    On another topic - Had to google YouTube of Karen Carpenter singing "Merry Christmas Darling".  Might have to put on Christmas CDs later.  It is almost 80 here in N Central Texas.  Where did winter go??  End of weather report.

    I agree.  It was raining yesterday and was 73 degrees! 

    Luv, I heard a Carpenter's song yesterday and mentioned to DH that you don't hear them much anymore.  What ever happened to Him after Karen died?

    DH and I were also talking about cigarette machines this weekend.  Yep, we liked messing with the knobs, too.  But our parents were always telling us to leave them alone.  Were they afraid it would actually dispense some and we would go out back and smoke 'em?

    The job I just left had a gumball machine in the lobby.  Good thing the candy was stale or I'd picked up a few too many calories when I had a stress craving for chocolate.

    I remember when those machines took pennies not quarters!

    When I was in grade school, the long stocking caps were in fashion.  Although they contained at least two feet of hat that you didn't need, and were like wearing a sign that every boy in your class could read so clearly ("Pull off,") I think it's almost time for them to be recycled into trendy again.  Maybe those and the 6ft. scarf!

    Never had one, but we have a lot warmer weather here.  It wouldn't have been a sign of fashion, but a sign of an overprotective mother for us.

    I was posting on Eli~'s Middies thread a few minutes ago and a memory from my grandmother's house came to mind.  When we'd go to stay with her she had some stuff to keep us entertained.

    One thing was to take one of the two pair of safety scissors from behind the kitchen door and cut out chains of paper dolls and then color their clothes.  SO simple, yet so fun!

    I used to love paperdolls where you'd get a book with the doll on the front cover in a stiffer cardboard & then the clothes were on the pages inside & you'd cut those out to dress the dolls.

    My sister had "magic"paper dolls that were sooooo fashionable.  She rationed out my play time with them, and always let me play with the one who was heavier and whose clothes weren't quite as cute.   Yes, she still has them.  This is a pic of the same ones...can't believe I found it!

    Pretty sure I posted on this way back in the thread...I had the Mary Poppins set of paper dolls. 

    Meece, The ones you pictured are like Colorforms, but before Colorforms came out.  My school had the colorforms Weather Set, and each day one kid got to put a cloud or a sun on that board and then dress the figure up in rain gear or whatever went with the weather of the day.

    That tickled a memory for me, but I am not sure if it was power of suggestion, or if our school actually had that as well.

    At this point, I think we may be revisting some of our older posts now and again, but that's okay, I like the memories.

    Love the Body on Tap. I had totally forgotten about that one and used it every day during my teenage years! Wow, it seems like so long ago in some ways, but just yesterday in others. :)

    I don't know.  I had more fun trying to put them back on the black sheet perfectly, than I did dressing them.

    Hahaha!  I also liked to put them back perfectly on the sheet like little puzzle pieces.  I had the set for 101 Dalmations too.

    I don't frequent the toy stores much these days, but I know they were still around when my kids were little...Power Rangers Colorforms.
