atypical ductal hyperplasia - I haven't heard of that. I guess it's similar to dcis. BC is the most confusing desease ever.
-
Lol, breastcancer makes breakups look easy!
Yes Sophia, lumpectomy... They took the size of a peach to remove a tumor the size of a grape, so now my lopsided breasts are even! The incision was across the nipple in a circle so the scar has blended in nicely. I'm happy cosmetically but looking good wont keep me alive!
adh is pre dcis, and the surgeon said about 50% of adh will develop into dcis. Not knowing if it was dcis or adh is inconsequential really, it's abnormal cells and I want them all gone! Since it was right at the margin the surgeon said he thinks its all gone but I am the one who wakes up with the fear or recurrence every day, not him! Not one woman I've spoken to think I'm unwise to go for the mastectomy and recon. Men seem to think differently, but that's just their caveman speaking. No breasts, no hair, no babies, I suppose I better get used to it!
How's your hair Sophia? Mine is still hanging in there, today is day 11 counting chemo as day 1.
Xx -
Kiwikid, I went one day before you and still have my hair, but I keep scratching my head. Must be a sign...
I understand your doubts, I had a unilateral mastectomy and I'm only going to place the TE in a few months, but sometimes I think that I'm always going to be afraid about the other breast, and keep thinking if I should do a prophylatic mx. I guess there's no right or wrong answers, you should think and do what's best for you, and not do this or that because others do it. I haven't decided yet too.
The no babies thing is bodering me more and more everyday. Never thought I'd realize how much I wanted to be a mom ONLY when they told me I can't because of BC. But that's another story...
-
If its any consolation my MO told me that after two years on tamoxifen a break to have a baby has the same benefits as being on the drug, so I guess there is some hope down the track for us er youngsters.
I had not yet wanted children but I was not ready to have that choice ripped away from me either. Sneaky shitty cancer.
My scalp is scratchy too! Have your cats fund the vacuum yet?
Xx -
Have your cats fund the vacuum yet? LOL
No, but my mom politely offered to spend the day cleaning my house, so I immediately started vacuuming, deep-cleaned the litter boxes, cleaned the windows, did lots of laundry, before she did it herself. I keep forgetting that I CAN use my right arm
I've heard of the "after two years" break on Tamoxifen. My doctor doesn't agree. I can always change doctor.
Xx.

kiwikid, good info on the lysine. I'm feeling lucky that I haven't gotten any mouth sores yet, but I'll keep that in mind just in case.
-
Sophia and kiwi kid - I started on 12/28 and it is holding strong still . I think this weekend will be about the time we start to see a change - hot some new head scarves amd a cute white beret ( parlez-vous francais ? ) in the mail today and going wig shopping Friday !
Gosh it feels food to finally feel normal !!! -
sophiafred, having lost one's boyfriend was a good way to word it - I just wanted to make sure he hadn't died (I was gauging my sympathy response!)
sandra, I'm adding the number of days you are ahead of me (I started 1/2) to see when feeling normal again might be something I can say! I'm so encouraged to read those words! I have this annoying lower stomach/intestinal pain/discomfort. I'm sure this, too, shall pass!
-
Lee - yes I had more of that about that time - it will pass indeed ! Keep up the protien intake , fluids and walks if u can - you will feel normal too very soon !!!
-
Sandra - glad you are feeling better!
Lee - I had the same stomach/intestinal discomfort after tx1. It was not nearly so bad after tx2.
I am off to chemo number 3 today. Another 8 hours at the hospital. DD took the day off from work and is going with me this time, so I glad to be able to spend the time with her. I don't get to see her nearly as often as I would like due to her longs hours at work.
Hope you all have a day of mild SE's and can keep a positive outlook.
-
Bren - thank u for your kind words !
I am thinking good thoughts about u today and that all will run smoothly . So nice your daughter is able to be there wih you ! -
Bren58, thanks so much for letting me know about the lower intestinal discomfort and TX 1! So glad to hear it wasn't as bad after TX 2! I hope today goes well and happy to hear you can spend some time with your daughter!
Sandra, are you still feeling good today! I hope so! I keep thinking about these words of yours: "Gosh it feels food to finally feel normal!!!" Those words are a beacon - although I must say, it's not been as awful as I thought it could have been - it's just that normal would be GREAT (I'm also thinking of normal as being how I felt pre-BMX). Also, I started out chemo with the dregs of a sore throat/cough/cold so that may have impacted how I felt once the steroid dose wore off. I keep thinking those famous words "this, too, shall pass!" And the good thing is - I've been able to walk a mile a day so far so as long as I can keep getting those little endorphin bursts it's all good!
Good thoughts/wishes/prayers to everyone today!
ETA: Sandra, I know I've said it already but I really love your haircut! If my stylist was closer (she's 100 miles away!) I would go get a similar cut in waiting for the "fall out."
-
I went out to lunch today and ate a salad with chicken and lo and behold... it tasted normal! And delicious. Thank you taste buds for reappearing. Perhaps a glass of wine tonight!
-
FriendGwen, that's GREAT NEWS! Enjoy your kitty and a glass of wine tonight - and your normal tastebuds!
-
My kitty Annie is a chow hound! And I fear she will be way too interested in that glass of wine. She's my cat for sure.
-
Sandra60 - If we count from 28th Dec, tomorrow is day 14. For most of the girls here, it seems to be when it starts falling. Mine is completely dry and it just doesn't feel like my hair anymore, but the itchy feeling got better when I started using Head & Shoulders. I'm hoping it lasts a few more days because my mom's birthday is saturday. I keep telling her that it's fine, but she's having a hard time accepting everything.
-
Sophia - if you can handle it switch to just taking baths and don't wash your hair. I did that from day 15 when I had port surgery until day 20 and held on to my hair through Xmas. Once I hit the shower it came out in clumps but still appeared pretty normal. That night however I was ready and so had my DH shave it. It's all rather surreal but the anticipation was worse than the reality.
-
Yay Gwen! Glad your tastebuds are back to normal. It makes eating so much more enjoyable.
-
FriendGwen - I washed my hair today and it's still holding. Maybe it will get to Saturday.
Annie is such a cute name for a kitty... One of mine found a box of sugar packets and thought that was a cat toy of some sort, I'm like in an easter egg hunt all over the house following the sugar! But they're so cute, I can't be mad...
-
Back from chemo 3. All went well except that I forgot to put on the numbing cream before I went and my center does not have the freezing spray. Ouch. I don't think I will make mistake again! They did cut my Carboplatin dose because of the ringing in the ears and I also did not not get a headache from it this time. My stomach does not feel well, but I think that has more to do with the Vietnamese food that my DD ordered for lunch, rather than the chemo. At least I hope the stomach upset is not starting this soon! I did have all the anti nausea meds with the chemo.
Each time I feel a little more prepared for the SE's. Hopefully I won't get any new or weird ones this time around.
-
Just had chemo #2 last Friday and starting to feel better. However, the zofran does a real number on my digestive system! My NP said I could take Miralax and Colace to help make things "move" better. But I also read many of you recommending a probiotic. Have any of you found this to be just as effective or more effective than other OTC stuff? I cannot stomach yogurt. (I know - I'm picky and just can't eat the stuff.) I see these probiotic tablets advertised, though, that I can just swallow with some water. Does anyone have a testimonial for it? Do they really work? I can't be the only one suffering through this horrid constipation, am I? Looking for quick and easy relief with not too many side effects. I usually stop the nausea meds around day 5 - 6 and it gets better, but I need something to get me through those few days each treatment time. I can't give up the zofran or else I'll get nauseous. Help???
-
Duckie- I do eat yogurt and take a pill probiotic, but I also have been taking a teaspoonful of this stuff called Calm. Got it at the health food store on the recommendation of a nurse when I had surgery. It is calcium magnesium and has a very mild laxative effect.after my first go-round I made the mistake of taking some nasty little pill and I was up all night with stomach cramps and diarrhea. Not fun! So I started on the Calm this time and so far my stomach feels better. No constipation or diarrhea. Hope that can be of some help to you.
-
Trying to get ahead of the diarrhea se from my first treatment of taxotere/cytoxan. Anyone have a solution? I don't want constipation but wonder which would be easier to fix .
-
Gwen, can you post a picture of your kitten? Welcome back taste buds! Mine are about 80% back, I'd say.
-
Grace - try Immodium. It should help with the Diarrhea but should not make you constipated.
-
Maybe some of you knowledgeable women can give me some recommendations. Are there any paraben free moisturizers/makeup products you have found? I have tried looking online, but it is such a daunting task.
-
Dukidee ~
I too struggled badly with consitpation with Round 1 of AC. My nurse warned me about the zofran so I took 250 mg nightly of colace (docusate sodium) and two 8.6 mg tabs of Senna. Things never got completely blocked but it was challenging to be sure. After surgery I had the same issue from the oxycodone and after a few frustrating days I upped the Senna to 4 tabs/day. That was a mistake so I stick with two now. Walking also helps some and warm water after big meals helps me too. I take a probiotic every day (and have for years) and do not think that by itself it would help with Zofran induced constipation.
I have really enjoyed feeling "normal" for the last 4 days and am sad to be giving that up at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow when I go in for round 2. However, the only way out of this chemo tunnel is through so onward I go!
Bren 58 ~ congrats on having your round 3 infusion in the rearview mirror! I hope the nausea wanes and your SE journey is an easy one.
-
duckiedee- I have the same problem. I take a probiotic. I also take a dose of Miralax with a morning cup of coffee during chemo week. No taste, no cramps, no embarrassing surprises
-
Sophia-yes I had the same experience today with my hair -day 14 for me as well. While styling this new pixie do (which I have to admit I hate - reminds me of a 1960's county singer or something
my hair started to come out in fist fills using my flat iron ! Oh well - I am prepared - but may take Gwen's advice and do the bath's instead of shower to preserve it just a bit longer .....
Went to the office this afternoon - really had a lot of energy - feeling good !
Duckedee - are u sure u need to take the zofran for that many days ? I know we are all different but I only needed to take 1 pill - did not have nausea after that . My biggestrpblem was the acid reflux - hearburn which I will head off with Prevacid prior to chemo next time .
Nicole - will be thinking food thoughts for you on round # 2 tomorrow ! You are a veteran now so all should go well and back to that beloved " normal ". Very soon !
Bren - glad things went ok for u today And thinking good thoughts for minimal side effects for you in the next few days - ! -
Are there any paraben free moisturizers/makeup products you have found? I have tried looking online, but it is such a daunting task.
Powermom - I make my own soap, so I know there's nothing artificial there, and it's easy to find deodorants in any supermarket that say: "0% aluminium chlorohydrate, parabens and alcohol". It's a lot more complicated with lotions, because this is a type of product that needs some kind of preservative or else it will spoill very quickly. There are some paraben-free ones but... I do not consider a product safe only for this reason. There was a study relating parabens to breast cancer, so what some companies do is substitute parabens for OTHER preservatives with more weird names that have no studies guaranteeing that they are safe. You are basically *%&$# with cosmetics.
