So...whats for dinner?

More prayers for Apple and her family.
Eric -
I was just thinking
In order to keep it easier for Apple and her family to read everyone's good wishes, why don't we post them all in this thread:http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/8/topic/798177?page=4#idx_96
Yes, it's a Stage IV forum, but no one objects to well wishes and supportive notes being posted by anyone.
-
Thank you Michelle for the update on Apple. Will take your advice and post there.
Susan So glad your back! Keep resting!
No dinner last night, nothing sounded appetizing so I just skipped it alltogether.
-
DH told me ahead of time that Notre Dame would be no match for the Crimson Tide. Apparently the SEC is the powerhouse conference. I'm wondering if LSU fans weren't rooting for ND! No way could they root for AL. I really like the AL coach who also coached for LSU. All this said, I'm not a college football fan. Prefer to watch the gladiators, aka NFL. It's such a brutal sport and yet so graceful in the slow motion replays.
Susan, it's wonderful to see your post. Hope you continue to get stronger.
Michelle, thanks so much for the info on Apple. I will follow your suggestion.
Chabba, the walleye was delicious. And it was caught very close to ND. Our friends live in Eden, SD, which is close to Sisseton, up in the northeast corner of SD. They make shopping trips to Fargo, about an hour and a half drive. When we visited these friends this summer, they gave us frozen walleye and we gave them frozen Louisiana shrimp that I had headed and put into packages myself. The shrimp were fresh off a shrimp boat.
Last night I got a biga or bread starter out of the freezer. It was made months ago before we went away for the summer. This morning it is bubbling so the yeast is alive. I also got flour out of the freezer so later on I'll make some artisan bread. The ingredients are so simple. Starter, yeast, water, flour and, depending on the recipe, salt. The Tuscan recipes don't call for salt since salt was too expensive way back when.
I must get moving. It's almost 10 am and I'm still in my robe. Lazybones me. DH exercised at the Y and is off to play tennis.
-
Been cleaning cast iron.... the first pieces should be ready for re-seasoning tonight.....a #8 (chicken) fryer with a self basting lid, both made by Griswold. It's basically 1/2 way in height between a skillet and a dutch oven and has the same style lid as the dutch oven.
The talk of types of chickens made me decide to work on that one first.
Eric -
Sending prayers and positive energy to Apple.
Saw the movie Django today..Quentin Tarantano's usual...blood and guts, plus lots of swearing. Could have been made in two hours...not three.
Last night was steak and potatoes with red velvet cupcakes for dessert, while watching Bama beat ND! Tonight will be leftover sliced pork loin over cornbread stuffing with gravy, green beans and a salad.
-
Michelle- Thanks for the link on Apple. Have a great trip!
Susan- glad to see you posting again. Rest up and feel better.
Carol- I say yay for lazy mornings! And I want some of your bread;)
Eric- Good luck with the chicken and your new cook wear!
I went to the Dr today with double ear infections. Yuck. But I have meds now and should be better in no time. I have Michelle's spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove and am going to make chicken parm with it. Yummmm.
Hope everyone had a good day today.
-
Hi everyone! Debbie and Michelle, enjoy your trip!! I am so jealous, soak up some sun and fun for me.
Susan, I'm glad to see you back too. Hope you'll be feeling like your normal self soon.
Boy, Laurie, you sure are getting hit with bugs! Hope you feel better. You too Carrie. I have been really lucky, knock on wood.
Everyone's dinners sound good, but you're all going to be jealous of mine tonigt. Today is the actual 50th b-day and DH is cooking lobster tails and baked potatoes and a salad, and some carrot cake after. I have been thinking about it since Sunday when we bought the lobster tails. It's been quite a while since I've had lobster, it should be good!
And Kaara, I think you got that wrong. You meant to say Bama beat ND
, didn't you?Enjoy the rest of the day everyone. And Michelle, thanks again for the link to post to Apple. I think that was a great idea.
-
Ditto on the vacations Debbie and Michelle!
I'm glad you're feeling better Susan
And glad to hear from Apple
Kay G Gimme them lobster tails! And the rest too.
Love my goats. Gimme your goats. I Will get one some day. I want one or two!
I've won the dope of the day award. Couldn't find my company i phone and paniced. Called with my cheap 30 prepaid one and still couldn't find it. I was sittting on it in the car with the radio on. Then I made a fire with the flu? Flew? whatever closed and wondered where all the smoke was coming from. Yay! You're all safe for another day!
I will try to do something really dumb first thing in the morning so that you don't have to worry about winning the *prize of shame* tomorrow
I am babysitting my landlords old deaf/blind poodle tonight. He likes to snore in my ear. I call him gee-gaw. My daughter calls him balls. Don't ask.
I thought I'd have a Blue Moon for dinner. It was a good thought. The orange slice will cover the fruit group.
-
Bedo, are you sure you didn't have several Blue Moons before writing that post? LOL. Thanks for making me smile.
Kay, enjoy that delicious birthday dinner. It sounds wonderful.
The house smells like fresh-baked bread. Besides bread and butter, dinner will be linguine with marinara sauce w/ Italian sausage and a green salad with romaine, tomato, cucumber, avocado and blue cheese. Sweet onion on dh's salad and a few kalamata olives on mine.
I read all the posts on the forum about Apple's absence from bc.org. It was heartwarming to learn how many friends she has made. I so hope she gets better.
Laurie, sure hope the meds do the trick.
Kaara, good to hear from you. Your meals sound good.
Eric, when you use your chicken pot, will you cook a hen, fryer, capon, or cornish hens?

-
Laurie - you just can't get a break!!! Enjoy the chicken parm...DH is making waffles for dinner. Sounds as good as anything else. Bless his heart, I've been so picky about what I eat - nothing tastes good these days. But tomorrow I forsee Emend and Aloxi...gotta get this nausea in check so I can enjoy my trip.
-
Have been busy all day, and it has been fun catching up to these posts. Clever ladies!
Bedo, I had the same thought as Carole...And be careful with that flue! We had a flue fire many years ago in our NH place...very scary....my bad for building too big a fire when we arrived late on a frigid cold night many years ago and we were lucky that the Newfound volunteer fire department got out of their beds faster than my DH and sons to extinguish it....a wonderful virus laden woman leading the group!
Yes, ND succumbed to an NFL level Bama team. WOW! MY DH warned me about that. I feel badly for the young Irish, but am still glad I was one of the first women students to ever set foot on that wonderful campus. At least I was able to go to bed before the brutal end since I had an early doc appt today.

So my PC, who I really like, never alluded to my avoidance of her since the hospitalization, yet is referring me to a cardiologist to get that concern out of the way. We both loved the fact that for the first time in about 18 years I was not seeing her for bronchitis at this same time.....might have to do with the fact that I am not working in my old germ factory!
After that appt., I decided to head to one of my favorite produce stores, and went crazy buying just that! I got this red swiss chard (first time purchase)that looked so appealing, then had to figure out what to do with it aside from using it in smoothies since I have plenty of other veggies for that. I found a great eggplant lasagna with chard in the ricotta filling recipe that was light and delightful. Unfortunately, I totally forgot that DH had a dinner meeting tonight so would not be home to enjoy it....so assembled it and will cook it tomorrow evening. Made a small portion for myself to test it out. Yum!
Michelle, I'm with you on the frustration of people not taking their jobs seriously! And so inconsiderate!
Thanks for the info on how to communicate our support to Apple!
Has anyone seen this hysterical Betty White show ? I'm off to watch it..... -
Kay- Happy Birthday and enjoy your wonderful dinner!
Bedo=LMAO! Love your post, thanks for the giggle.
Michelle-I hope the meds work and you kick the nausea- youdon't need that on your vacation!
No I don't seem to be able to catch a break. I have had this dumb cold for almost three months- but that seems to be the norm with the colds this year. My ears have been bothering me for a couple of weeks now but last night the right one was hot and really quite painful. To quote the Dr "it looks angry." I told her it felt angry- she said the entire canal on my right side is infected- whatever that means- doesn't sound good. Running a temp etc. So 500mg antibiotic three times a day for ten days. Usually in 24 hours things get better- so here is to tomorrow night!!
-
Michelle, I think we overlapped posts. Here's hoping you can get the nausea in check!
And Kay, a big HB! You remind me of my Philly days when we ate lobster tails...rarely hear of them here....but they are so good. -
Laurie, don't forget to eat lots of yogurt ( or take acidophilus) while on that antibiotic, so you can avoid any yeast imbalances! "It's always something...."(RRD)
-
Lacey- You must have secretly whispered in my ear today when I picked up the prescription- grabbed some pro biotics too
Hope you are having a good night:) -
Lacey - are you talking about Betty White's off your Rockers... I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time... hysterical for sure.
Laurie: hope you feel better soon.
Michelle : thanks for update on Apple - hope you feel good soon and can have a good trip.
Love & hugs to everyone - even though I have read all your posts dont have the energy or time to respond to all - sorry.
Dinner is a beef, brocolli stir fry.
-
Yes, Tazzy, that's the show. I only know it because last week I kept hearing DH laughing hysterically and discovered why. I wonder if my DSs would find it as amusing?!

By the way, I recall people mentioning the Fitbit device which we asked DS1 to give us for Christmas....sounded like a neat thing. Well, I have yet to open mine, but DH used his...for two days until it stopped working. He has been trying for days to contact the company, and the farthest he has gotten is to hear a message that the company does not take direct calls, which is why I suppose there is no number displayed anywhere on their packaging. He is not amused after the long search....and we'll see if he hears back from them tomorrow....unless they are related to Michelle' caulker!! We are trying to decide if we should open mine since they say there are no returns unless the package is in it's unopened shape. Great!
Oh Michelle, Bob went to dinner at Via Moda tonight...said it was great....was that where you and Rick went a while ago? -
FLASH!
DH just got a very nice email from Fitbit about how to fix his problem with the device. Yay..I really wanted to try mine, and not feel badly about this newer company.
I think that they just have to get a better front person for customer service so it isn't so hard for customers to reach them and address product issues. So they are not related to the caulking guy. Whew! -
LOL Carole, I think you have bedo's number. Bedo, you really crack me up. You should be a comedian!
Lacey, what is a fitbit? How disappointing! Hope they send DH a new one. I share your sorrow about ND and Bama.
Dinner was delish! I wish I turned 50 every day. Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. -
Aloha! Hi every one. I read all the post last night(took an hour) then wrote a long post and lost it was so disappointed, anyway been having a wonderful time enjoying the sun and drinking mai-Tai's among other drinks went to dinner last night with my sister and her BF took both bottles of wine and drank them there ( thank god they didn't explode in the plane Michelle) HaHa! Suntanned today and ate dinner tonight at the yard house had my favorite green chili and jack cheese burger.Afterwards We went to the rum fire it's a great place here at the Sheraton a hang out for everyone it seems a mix of young and old a lot of yuppies I don't know how these young kids can afford to drink there all night with nothing under $10.00. There was couple next to us he was young (about 25 or so)and she looked to be about 40 she was a hooker he bought a $100 bottle of champagne for her and when he got up to go to the bathroom she hit on other men haha then anther who had skin tight pants on that looked like he was waiting for a flood started pole dancing on a pole that was not for that purpose. Oh my, what a weird night lol But we are having fun!
I was so sad to read about Apple and have been praying really hard for her. Thanks Michelle for keeping every one informed. I hope you get the nausea under control and glad you are going on vacation have a wonderful fun time.
Kay-Happy birthday your dinner sounds so yummy
Before- As always you crack me up
Laurie-your trip sounded fun and glad you enjoyed it. Ear infections are painful I don't usuaLly get them but had one about 4 months ago and it hurt the antibiotics helped.
Hi to everyone better go before I loose this post too not used to typing on acellular an hate spell check lol -
Debbie Sounds like a blast! fun to watch all the weirdos! ha ha
Laurie Thinking my ears may be infected also with this cold, but I also think I just have so much fluid in there that I cant get out. antibiotic working for all other symptoms but not the dang ears. Went to Lowes yesterday to get some paint for chair re-do project and I saw a sales lady walking towards me and I could see that her mouth was moving, but couldnt hear a thing she was saying,,ha ha so I just assumed she was asking if she could help me find anything, so that was how I answered "no thanks" hope it was appropriate.
Kay mmmm on the lobster what a treat!
Bedo Funny stories. If you put your phone on vibrate..you will definitely know that you are sitting on it...LOL
Eric I am also guessing there is a chicken getting ready to go in that pan?
Last night was general tso chicken stir fry. fried the chicken pieces after dredging in cornstarch as directed in my new "The chew Cookbook" but found they were tough...any thoughts on that?
-
I know several people, men and women, with the Fitbit, and they really like the gizmo. I have the WW ActiveLink, which is less expensive than the Fitbit and not quite as sophisticated. The Fitbit supposedly gives feedback on sleep patterns if you wear it on a wristband at night. It also gives activity info like no. of steps a day, etc. The ActiveLink measures activity and computes activity points. Lately I haven't been very active and my ActiveLink website lectures me. It is so funny! Like Big Brother keeping tabs. With both gadgets you plug them into your computer and they automatically download info.
Debbie, sounds like you're having a ball in Hawaii. Good for you.
Michelle, sorry about the nausea. Hope you feel better and can enjoy your trip.
Definitely no drought conditions here in south Louisiana. More downpours last night. My poor sister is having her house renovated, thanks to being flooded during Hurricane Isaac. She says her yard is a disaster and so is her long driveway (she lives in the country and raises horses) from the delivery trucks and workmen. A company had to raise her house 4 ft. On the positive side, it sounds like her house will be really nice when it's eventually finished. Meanwhile she and her dh are tired of camping in a house about a 30 min. drive away.
DH went early to a dermatologist apptment to have "scrapings" on skin cancers. Now he's back home and is planning to cook big lima beans with a ham bone. My task today is to clean up, straighten up the office, which is a large room, originally the master bedroom in this ranch style house built in the 1970's. DH and I built on another master bedroom and bath when we bought and renovated the house 20 yrs. ago. The office isn't used much now because DH and I both have switched to laptops and keep them by our chairs in the living room. Habits CAN change even with old f**ts!

Cornstarch by itself doesn't do much to chicken at all! The method is called velveting [so you can google other ratios.] They will all look something like this:
1 egg white
1 T Chinese rice wine
1 t kosher salt
1 T corn starch (flour)This should be enough for about a pound of chicken. You will also find mixtures with a bit of sesame oil, Shaoxing wine, soy sauce [both light and dark], etc. There are so many wonderful Chinese cookbooks, I probably wouldn't use the Chew as a source for that continent.
*susan*
-
If you're interested in Chinese cooking, go to a large Asian food market. So many interesting things!
Welcome back Susan, I've missed you. -
Oh Nancy that is on the list for DD and I to do one weekend shortly. Irving area towards Dallas has some big Asian markets. Ft. Worth for all its cosmopolitan wantings to be doesn't have one. But what can you say about a city that bills itself as "Cowtown". Also very glad to see you back Susan.

-
Welcome back, Susan!
Thanks for the explanation of the fitbit, Carole. DH is busy wearing his again, after learning how to reset it. For some reason that process was not easily accessible in the manual, (acc to DH) but the guy who eventually responded to DH's email was helpful with it. I must start using mine. I wonder if it will credit my recumbent biking since that does not involve steps. And when I am cooking I think I'll dance around to music, so those hours are not wasted!
I feel like I am heavily into winter cooking mode...and as a result have way too much food in the refridge. Have to invite some friends over to share....and will bring ricotta cookies to some of my neighbors today. Not crazy about the texture of those, but the lemon taste is wonderful.
While tonight we are going to have the eggplant lasagna I constructed last evening, I am also going to make some Amelia chicken pastina soup since I kept some chicken available for this, and am just getting around to it. Maybe that will be lunch food for DH. Still have that whey awaiting in the fridge to be used in bread. Is it going to be worth anything nutritionally at this stage?
Carole, I feel for your sister...so much patience required! I would not do too well wading through mud. But after watching Treme I can't help but wonder how flood survivors ever get rid of the mold?!
We are waiting for our builder guy to settle on a day to replace a giant bay window we have in our breakfast area. As of this AM he says Monday is the day, since it is supposed to be relatively warm then. That would be great! -
So here I am at chemo and I have been diagnosed with "anticipatory nausea"...yeah, it's a real thing although I think it sort of indicates it's psychosomatic. When I think back to my pregnancy days, it's all too familiar. I don't think it's in anticipation of treatment (unless my mind is really playing tricks on me) because there's nothing here that sets me off. In any case, I now have almost all the meds I got when I did DD AC/T. The only thing they couldn't give me is the wonder drug Emend. Apparently the insurance companies think you don't need it with weekly carbo. I hope they are right.
I had Campbell's Chicken Rice soup for lunch...haven't eaten that in years! It tasted really good, which was a pleasant surprise. And DH has gone to get his lunch and is bringing me back some chocolate ice cream. I've lost 5 pounds in the past two weeks so a little ice cream will do me some good!
-
Michelle - we had take-out egg drop soup from our local Chinese restaurant last night and I mixed in white rice (part of the order) and it really tasted good. Just had some leftovers for an early lunch and tasted equally good today.
Something else that's tasting really good to me (and has loads of protein - 23 grams per cup) is Fage Greek Yogurt (0% fat) mixed with Trader Joe's fresh squeezed orange juice. I've unofficially named it a Greek Sunrise
. I hope it continues to taste good throughout chemo because it's one way of getting protein (I've been leaning toward higher carb foods since this started so at least I know this adds in some protein). I hope you get the nausea under control.
FWIW - the cancer navigator at the Disney Cancer Center included some Gin Gins candy - extra strength - in my packet last week. I thought they helped over the weekend so we went on a semi-wild goose chase to find more of them and ended up locating them at Cost Plus World Market. Only two or three dollars a bag. The little packages they're wrapped in have airplanes printed on them so I guess they're geared toward travelers but seem to also have a chemo following as well. I'm thinking of getting a pair of Seabands at Walgreen's today - just for extra nausea "insurance." Have you ever tried those?
I asked about the Emend when my chemo started but they said it was "too late" (it's supposed to be taken an hour before). There was an anti-nausea med in the prep IV bag but I can't recall the name (might have started with a K).
Debbie, your trip thus far sounds great! So glad you got that hamburger in and hope you can get another one under your belt before the end of the trip!
-
LeeA - I have tried those bands and they don't work for me. I tried them on a cruise and after 30 minutes I went for the patch. I like egg drop soup, I could add some Minute Rice to it and it would probably be perfect. And I make smoothies with Greek yogurt, a little orange juice, and a few frozen blueberries and raspberries. Unfortunately, that's not fool-proof for my nausea problem. Are the gin-gin candies made with ginger? That's supposed to work for some people so if I run across some, I'll pick up a package. We don't have a World Market in the area, maybe I'll see one in Florida while we're there. This nausea took me by surprise because I really didn't have any problems with DD AC/T. Hopefully IV Aloxi works better than a couple of Zofran.
