Pathology 2nd Opinion
Does anyone know where I can send my slides for a second opinion?
I want to send it to the best pathologists in the USA. I would greatly appreciate
it.
Thank You In Advance.

Viktoria, until members post with their own recommendations, you can find more information about the why, when and where of getting a second opinion in the Getting a Second Opinion section of the main Breastcancer.org site.

I sent mine to Johns Hopkins. This is the link to their website www.pathology.jhu.edu/department/services/secondopinion.cfm. I filled out the forms and then my oncologist's office (who had the slides) sent them for me.

Mt. Sinai in New York City is supposed to be good on differential diagnosis between ADH and DCIS. i'm treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City, which also has an excellent pathology department.
I mistakenly thought you lived in Maryland (but your initials say Michigan), so I mentioned Johns Hopkins in an earlier post. Is U of Michigan Medical Center good for second opinions?

I had my slides sent to a Johns Hopkins Breast Center. It cost $250 for the 2nd opinion (which by the way was the same as the original). My insurance covered it.

I visited with a second MO that was part of a different hospital where more research is done. He thought it might be useful (and might just keep me from fretting) if the pathologists there examined my slides again for an independent assessment. I just got the news today that nothing invasive was found -- yay!

Thanks thanks and thanks for your info. Yes, i live in Michigan

I sent mine to sloan. I got a different diagnosis! You are very wise to get another opinion.

I sent mine to Emory and MD Anderson. Emory found a small (3 mm) IDC that had been missed by 3 prior pathologists (MD Anderson confirmed).

thanks

Wow! I guess that's why MD anderson is number one in the country.
It's amazing how haphazard the process is. The dr looks through a microscope and decides.
I have a friend who is a pathologist. He did his residency at U of Chciago and his fellowship at Sloan.
He was hired at Northwestern. First day he looked at a slide and said the man did not have pancreatic cancer.
He was going by the rule s he'd learned. His supervisor came over and said "here we call that cancer".
Unbelievable!

Yeah...that is pretty unbelievable! I got quite an education on how "grey" the interpretation of DCIS vs ADH vs LCIS was between path's - quite a bit of disagreement between the pathologists on that one. It made a big difference for me as to whether I needed rads bilaterally or not (close margins after MX bilat). And I will be forever grateful for the pathologist at Emory who combed through my slides and found the tiny IDC. I had quite a bit of DCIS, so I've been told that was a lot of slides to look through. The small ones are easy to miss, I guess.
-
may I ask what was the size of your DCIS?
-
I have been reading a lot about a Dr. Lagios (I think the sp is correct) in this forum. He is apparently one of the premier pathologists for DCIS and is very highly recommended. He has saved lots of people from rads and AI's/Tamox that he felt were not necessary based on his research.

M.D. Anderson also has a remote pathology 2nd opinion service.
