Fran, you have good people then!
It's tough. I'm a lifeling sugar and junk food junkie thanks to parents who fed us that as well and didn't cook. So I'm having to erase 48 years of bad eating - it's pushing a year now, and I'm still struggling but doing much better than I ever thought I would be. Start with just one thing to give up/replace, it's a lot easier. Having your people to talk you out of stuff is awesome!

Hello all, and happy new year!
After the festivities last week, I decided it was high time to eat better, esp reducing my sugar intake...my resolve weakened almost the moment I made my decision!
I have done a little better today, at least had some fruit for snack this morning, rather than cookies, ice cream or caramel popcorn...although I did have all those after lunch...yikes I'm a sad case!!
Hmm...just made myself some fruit tea which I enjoy (luckily) without any sweetening necessary...must do more of that...hope others are having a more successful day!
Edited to add: Cheri, your advice about making changes one at a time is a great reminder. Mine for this week is to not snack on starchy or sugary foods after dinner (which I always cook myself and try to make healthy). Here's hoping it sticks...

I like the one thing at a time idea. I was doing really well, but have got back to my old habits. But the one thing I have kept out is diet coke. I used to be addicted to it, haven't drank it now in almost two years. The current item is omitting sugar from my coffee. It's easier because I don't feel deprived since I am still having coffee with others who are enjoying it with sugar. The starchy, sugary things after dinner is my big problem. I am going to have to figure out how to break that into smaller steps. Any ideas?

Great job on the Diet Coke, Kay. I do have diet soda once in awhile. Mostly to use in a mixed drink.
In my coffee, I use Heavy Whipping Cream. Sometimes a spoonful of coconut oil or sugar free. flavored coffee syrup.
For that after dinner sweet craving, try a square of dark chocolate. My favorite is Ghiradelli 86% intense dark.
My effort this new year is to start exersizing every day.

Kay - you could also use berries with a dollop of whipped cream for an after-dinner treat.

Coconut sugar in your coffee is a good sub for processed sugar. There's no coconut taste as I loathe coconut. It's from the plant not the fruit. I'll echo Zogo I have really dark chocolate, one square, and it's PLENTY now. I buy one with evaporated cane juice not regular white sugar. It's amazing that once you give up all the refined and processed sugar, other stuff is soooo sweet. I NEVER in a BILLION YEARS thought I would say that sentence!!!
And yeah, one thing at a time. Epiphany today is my one year I found out I had cancer anniversary. It was also the last day I had a Dr Pepper or any kind of cola. One year today! Dr Pepper and Coke free! I never thought I'd say THAT sentence either!! But I did it! Try stopping one thing for 2 weeks then start the next one. It really is easier that way. Good luck!
