Hi there,

I need help. About 9 months ago I had recon surgery. I had implants put in with fat grafting. They also took the muscle from my back and placed in the breast.

About 6 months ago I hurt the should blade area while boxing. It hurt right along the shoulder blade. It went away.

Then a few months ago it hurt again...but went away.

Then a month ago it hurt again and it went away BUT an area right below my shoulder is tender and slightly sore. The pain was radiating down my arm but that has gone away.It has gotten better but it's still there. Also around my scar line it feels a bit tingely at times. I know that is part of the surgery but the slight pain   So my concern is this part that is still sore mets...I had this spot hurt before about 2 months ago and went away. Can mets go away for months and come back?

I paddle and row often so I am constantly using my shoulders which probably doesnt help. I am SICK to my stomach with worry...Please help!

    hi pure

is it the same side as the lat flap surgery?  the lat can weaken your shoulder/range of motion.  I don't think (and i am not an expert here) that mets pains would come and go...i think it is pretty consistent.  I really think this is your upper body adjusting to the surgeries, apparently our muscles need to compensate for that lat that was moved to the front.  I actually think you are doing really well considering -boxing/paddling/rowing with this surgery is amazing.  I would contact your MO anyway to ease your mind

    Pure,

I think it would be unusual for the pain to get better and then return.  Sounds more like a re-injury pattern.  Is it worse with movement?  Repetitive movement injury (like with rowing?)

    Does ibuprofen make it better?

Don't know your age, but suspect rowing and boxing sure could cause some soreness!

Wishing you all the best, and that it resolves on its own.

The best thing for you to do is speak to your onc or doctor and have an xray or scan done to confirm. My mom is all 11+ year Stage 3 survivor who is currently waiting on biopsy results after some shoulder pain and swelling that has come and gone led them to 3 suspicious bone lesions. She put off getting it checked because she was under the impression that if it was mets the pain and swelling would be constant, but has since learned otherwise from her onc and from the Stage IV ladies on here.

It started with shoulder pain and some collarbone swelling after some heavy lifting. It went away a week later and then 3 months later returned, only far more painful and MASSIVE swelling. It's been 7 weeks of scans, biopsies and waiting and the pain and swelling has since pretty much disappeared again.

The only way to get peace of mind is to get it checked out. Seems the standard is that any pain that lasts more than 2 weeks or keeps coming back should be checked out.

I hope you feel better soon :)

It sounds like some form of lymphedema to me, as it comes and goes and is affected by movement. If not this, a pinched nerve from the surgery, especially if it is radiating down the arm. This nerve could be pinched due to swelling. As there really do seem like there are many very logical reasons for this pain, I think mets are unlikely.  You are using this arm in a way that could easily cause this type of injury after surgery. I think our bodies take a long time to heal and get used to a "change" like moving muscles to new locations, etc...I think you should have it looked at, but only think of your reasons being that it is a pinched nerve or some form of lymphedema, NOT mets! These other reasons for your issues DO make sense....

Sounds like nerve pain to me, hon.  You're less than a year out from recon and that is a huge shift in body tissue.  The front may be affecting the back.  For peace of mind...go get seen so they can tell you that you're all good.  Give Killian smooches from his aunties. :)

Pure, I am sure you will find that this is a matter of overuse. That area of your body is never the same, and I often get pains that eventually go away. I even babied it for a long time the first few years, and I am a runner and exerciser. I used to do a lot of push-ups, but I stopped those and just recently started doing them again. When you have these issues, I think it's our body's way of telling us to slow down. Take it easy for a few weeks on the upper body stuff, and then see how it feels. I've been where you are many times...I know that scary feeling!

{8}  Try not to to worry too much ahead of time, before you see somebody about it. I am am amazed you are doing paddling and rowing and boxing! Can I borrow a half a cupful of your energy? I hope it is just you pushing you to be stronger in your body and nothing worse. I am stage lllb or lllc, just finished chemo, and will start rads soon. lymphodema issues, and with extreme fatigue when i am normally active girl (52 years old) and i'd really like to box all the mad feelings out on a bag.  you know you best, but wow i am impressed with your regime. 12*30*12

Update: I had a very intense massage yesterday...The pain is gone. My shoulder blade is sour the entire area but I assume that is from the intensity of the massage. We shall see if the pain returns today. I feel stupid even asking this but I wonder: Can the pain from mets be massaged away? and WHY IS THE 3RD year of this S&&& so flippin hard! lol Sorry had to rant!

    Hi Jen,

I had pain in my shoulder area as well a while back - pain that would come and go. It seemed accentuated by some workouts but given my history I felt prudent to get it checked. I went to my general practioner and got an ultrasound of the area. The diagnosis was shoulder burstitis. I reduced the weights at my workouts (try to stay below 10 lbs on each side, usually I do 8 lbs) and the problem seems to have resolved. I'd say get it checked but feel confident that it's something else other than mets.

    Good luck!!!

Pure, are you taking some ibuprofen?  I used to not be a medicine taker, even when I had a lot of pain, but I will now if I need to.  I'll take an ibuprofen, and I'm so amazed when I realize a few hours later that the pain is gone (smile).  As for why the journey sometimes seems harder (you mentioned the 3rd year), I think that going through all of this is hard, and sometimes we have to make ourselves be optimistic even when we aren't.  But just hang in there, and tomorrow will be a better day!  I hope that massage did the trick!

Pure, I had so much trouble with my shoulders when I was on aromatase inhibitors. Eventually the inflammation caused tendons in both shoulders to tear, and I ended up having rotator cuff surgeries. When I finally stopped the AI's after six long years, the pain stopped. It was exactly as you describe. Are you on an AI by any chance?

Also, I too had a muscle from my back put in my breast. I think you are working that area too hard, regardless of what else might be going on there.

I am THRILLED to hear the massage made things feel better.  That is a VERY good sign as far as I'm concerned.  I don't thing you could massage mets away babe.

    Love you,

I had radiating elbow pain that would not go away. My chiropractor was actually a great help in dx and working to eliminate the pain. My onc. agreed with everything he said and did!!

The pain is better today so I do feel better about the fact that its slowly getting better. I think... I am praying it doesn't come back.

Weesa: Yes, I am on a AL...though the paid is in one shoulder blade area... not both. It's in the blade area of where I had the surgery ( back muscle removed)

I am such a mess right now... I have always had in my head that if this is coming back it just seems to come back year 3.

My friend, also had bc while pregnant, had hers come back at 3 and half years ( exactly where I am) and died a month later. She was young..and for some reason didn't do a taxol.. I miss her.. I wonder why her not me but I am also scared of what could happen. I have 4 kiddos..To leave them motherless kills me... I have been so so so depressed. I have been feeling like it would be better to just die then to have my family watch me die... To put them thorugh years of pain, tests, tx, etc.. I think I have hit a wall.. I think I would rather die then face this beast again. I hate that this has happen.... I hate that girls in stage 4 go through what they go through. I don't get it... I don't get any of it...

Pure, We are vulnerable by nature of our geography..on top of all the other reasons we share with everyone here.  I share your fear and from this perspective I think the story of your friend is telling of why your anxiety is high right now. It makes sense. maybe the previous injury to your shoulder is being aggravated by the AI. I have lots of aches and pains, and really don't know if it's from the AI or something else. it worries me all the time. anyway, I hope you can find some freedom from your angst, even if they are just moments. I cherish those moments...of peace and gratitude. Although I have to admit the are fleeting, they are powerful and memorable.

Hi Pure, I'm 2 and a half years out and I feel the same way you do. I wanted to share with you that I was having a weird pain from my shoulder and it went down my chest. I had my three month check up and I told my onc about it he checked it out, couldn't feel anything abnormal. But he did say what he worries about is when the pain does not go away. I don't think the pain would come and go with mets. Sure enough about a week later it was gone. I will say I have never had so many aches and pains since I've been on the AI's. I too wish I had just a little of your energy! You are not alone.

Pure, I think we all have bouts of fear and depression at some point. But I would urge you to talk to somebody about this, a nurse, onc, shrink or priest, anybody really. I really think it is important to iron out these feelings and move past them (even if they return occassionally).

Thank you guys... So the pain in my back has I would say almost totally gone away... I am still getting a feeling down my arm but I would say it's 70% better. It's taken about 2 weeks to get to this point but I have to assume with an shoulder problem it would take a while. When I first injuered it it took almost a month.

I have sunk into a deep depression though-for some reason when I first wake up in the morning I am just depressed beyond depressed. I think bad thoughts...really bad... I have never been so low except when i was first diagnosed. I guess I need to get some sort of help but all the doc will do is perscribe something and I don't want to be drugged up... I hate this life..It sucks!

I'm sorry you are feeling so low. I also have a friend who died from BC from recurrence at year 7. I find trying to balance my desire for a long life with my fear of mets very challenging. I haven't found any answers. I try to do the right things like exercise, friends, persuing my dreams. Somedays are great and others aren't. Many times its like living in a dream. How come I have to worry about death in my 50s? I know you know you should see your dr for help. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi, I am new here.  I was dx in February 2010 with infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma of my left breast.  The tumor was walnut size.  I had + lymph nodes in 9 nodes.  When I finally pinned them down they told me I was stage III c.  I did chemo, then surgery (double mastectomy), and then radiation.  I still have not done reconstruction but plan to do so. I took tamoxifen faithfully until this past November when i simply couldn't do it any more. I became menopausal after my first chemo treatment.  The side effects were awful for me - tons of pain, joint damage and pain, no energy, weight gain, headaches almost daily, extreme hot flashes ALL of the time, vaginal atrophy that made intercourse very painful even with the use of lubrication, clay colored stools at times, edema in my hands and legs, changes in vision, and tons of cognitive effects.  The cognitive effects were blamed on 'chemo-brain' but all of the symptoms cleared completely after I had stopped the medication in November.  I am reluctant to try any further medications because of my experience with tamoxifen.  My onc doctor recommends arimedex but I am starting to feel so great that I don't want to change this quality of life issue.  I am 49 years old and I am grateful to have survived my first battle with this demon cancer, but I have never been told about what kind of life extension the tamoxifen will give me.  I don't want to die, but I am also not afraid to do so. Sure could use some feedback from you all.

Cindy, I do not know the exact percentages, but your onc should be able to tell you how much, statistically, you are likely to gain from an AI. As far as I know, the hormone treatments are quite effective in ER+ cancers.

For what it is worth, I am doing fairly OK on letrozole. You could at least try it.

Pure, are there no live support groups in your area? Is there a psychologist at your hospital/clinic? Most cancer units have someone you can talk to when needed. You are not alone in feeling this way.

    Hi Pure,

I wanted to say I'm sorry you're having this worry. :(

My hope is that it's overuse/strain.  When do you see your onc next?  Have you called the office to talk with them?  I've had a couple of bone scans when I have had concerning aches/pains and they have both come back clean.

FWIW, I have gone through periods of depression that was worse after the treatment than during treatment.  I think it's pretty common.  If it doesn't go away, you could consider an antidepressant.  I'm on lexapro and it has made such a difference in my anxiety.

What does that mean? If u have flashes ang night sweats, ur Chances of recurrence is less as per the side effects means its working? I guess I am not understanding those studies tectonic shift?
