radiation and nausea

Options

OK ladies, Let me start by saying, I have been a nurse for 12+years and have heard that radiation does not cause nausea.

Let me also add that I have been lucky enough to bounce back quickly from any surgery and only had to take pain med for the first day after my

lumpectomy.

So, at the beginning of my radiation treatment I knew that the only thing that I would have to deal with was some fatigue .

Well, I made it about 3 block from the hospital when my mouth began to water, my stomach started to feel queasy . By the time I made it home

I was fighting not throwing up. Radiation was at 2pm by 10pm it seemed to pass.

And that is my experience with Radiation. Take if for what its worth. Read all you can find and ask your Dr. they will all say that radiation does not cause nausea.

Gracie, we discussed this on the May 2012 thread ... there were many of us who experienced nausea to some degree (yours sounds severe).  Mine also came in 'waves'.  I say "hogwash" on radiation not causing nausea.  That said, mine did pass after radiation treatment was over (by two weeks out I wasn't having any problems).  Also, it is important for me to come clean and say I have severe chronic gastritis/esophagitis as well -- pretty much all my life (PPI's for many years).

Good luck to you ... I hope it clears up for you.

    Hi Gracie,

Just for some validation, the main Breastcancer.org site lists radiation as a cause of nausea. Check out the page on Nausea for some tips and advice, if you wish!

I had nausea...RO said lots of women get it. He advised me to snack on crackers and peanut butter. It helped.

I also had nausea, as did many of the women on the same Rads thread as me. My rad onc repeated the mantra he'd learned, "It's not from the rads. It's not from the rads.". Unfortunately many SEs are dealt with this way. The rads field is very close to the esophogus and the stomach but for some reason many rad oncs dismiss this.

Add me to the list of breast radiation patients who get nausea from it even if their ROs say they won't. It's not too bad but it is pronounced for a couple hours after the rad treatment and then fades until the next day. I am also on tamoxifen and have been taking it at night, about 7 hours after radiation. the nausea corresponds more directly to the radiation but I bet being on tamoxifen doesn't help my body deal with the nausea better.

Yes! I had nausea as well.  In fact, I even took a pregnancy test, just to cover all my bases. (Not pregnant, BTW). No one at my house had a virus, and my diet was totally normal.  While the RO nurse said she doubted it was the radiation, she said she couldn't guarantee it wasn't, so she prescribed some phenergan.

I had nausea for the first couple of weeks of my rads.  I'm getting close to the end and haven't had it again.  However, I still have diarrhea that started at the beginning of my rads and hasn't completely gone away.
