Has anyone had a bone biopsy of the clavicle?

Options

My mother has finally got her appt. to have a bone biopsy this Thursday morning. They told her that they will do the biopsy on the clavicle where one of the bone lesions was on her CT scan. Has anyone had a biopsy done on the clavicle bone? She's not sure what to expect as far as pain during and after and the person who called with the booking didn't tell her anything.

Just wondering if she'll be able to get back to her usual activities or if she'll be in too much pain.

Thank you :)

I have been doing some reading about biopsies (probably not a good idea) and have come across more than one source that says that clavicle bone biopsies are avoided because of the bone's proximity to other important nerves, veins, and the lungs and that other locations, such as the hip area are preferred for biopsy when possible. My mom has two more suspicious bone lesions - one on the sacrum and other on the illiac bone. If this information is true then I am not sure why they wouldn't biopsy one of the other spots.

Has anyone had their collarbone/clavicle bone biopsied? How was it as far as pain and recovery?

    Hi Canadagirl,

I haven't had a clavicle biopsy but did have my T11 vertebrae biopsied. Pain almost non-existent. Recovered quickly. Unfortunately didn't get conclusive results. I get the impression that bone biopsies are difficult to get a good read from especially if they are small. Maybe the other lesions are too small? You should ask the doctor why they made this choice. I asked why my T11 instead of my liver mets and the answer was that they were just too small.

    Good luck. Annie

She had the biopsy this morning and after some confusion as to what side she was having biopsied...AGAIN...they managed to get 3 samples from the clavicle bone with the lesion. It only hurt for a split second and she was done within a few minutes and we even went shopping all afternoon after the biopsy. Let's hope they don't need to do another and finally get some answers this time. I just hope that if it's bad news they hold off till after Christmas to tell her so she can enjoy herself! There's been nothing but confusion and mishaps since this all started 5 weeks ago! The person performing the biopsy did say that if the samples were insufficient that they would have to opt for surgery to find out what they need. Hope they got it right this time.
