Melatonin?

Hi there

I have fully recovered from a Diep flap op after having DCIS and should now be at a place in my life where I am healthy and happy. For some strange reason in the last 2 weeks am having major problems getting a good nights sleep. In a nutshell I take ages dropping off and wake up every night at about 3 or 4 am feeling hot and can't get back to sleep so you can imagine how this is affecting me. I have seen the DR and medical causes have been rules out. I am not really after advice of ways to sleep as have tried everything believe me lol! I am specifically interested in something called Melatonin don't know if anyone has heard of it or used it as I have read its very good for insomnia and having googled it I can't seem to find anything negative about it but naturally am weary before trying something new. Would be very grateful for any feedback xx

    Hi Bexy I use Melatonin on a regular basis without any problems. There are many women on these boards who also use it.

    There are two types available, the normal melatonin is the one that will put you to sleep but there is a slow release one that will help to keep you asleep.

    By what you say in your post the slow release one would be more appropriate for you.

    Oh wow such a quick response thankyou! I don't suppose you know any brand names of the slow release ones do you I am having real trouble finding them. I will definately give it a go and from what I have read a good aspect of it is it is believed to reduce the risk of breast cancer! Someone else has recommended 5htp which is meant to be similar as it increases melatonin and serotonin so that could be another option too have u heard of that? xxxx

    chrissyb - may I ask how much melatonin you take? I was told to try 1/2 mg but strangely in pharmacies here in the US I can only find 3mg, 5mg and 10mgs strengths, which means I will have to go online....

    Hi,

    I have used melatonin on and off for many years. Start with a low dose, 3 mg, and see how it goes. I usually take 5 or 10 mg. One of my daughters had vivid disturbing dreams when she took it but most people have no problems with it. Hoping you get a good night's sleep soon.

    I take 6mg around 8:30 at night, and go to bed between 9:30 and 10:30. It's been a godsend. Before, I could be tired all day but for some reason once bedtimr rolled around I felt like I could run a marathon. Now I actually get sleepy at bedtime and fall asleep fairly quickly.

    Sorry Bexy and Athena I somehow list this thread so my apologies for being so tardy.



    Bexy I don't know what the brand names would be in the USA but I do know they were available in Walmart as I saw them there when I visited last year.



    Athena I don't think you can get them in such a low dose but on line you can get 1mg. I take 5mg most nights but not every night. I started with 3mg as recommended by my doc but found it wasn't quite enough. In Australia it is not readily available so I have no choice but to get my supply on line.

    When I was having radiation, one of the side effects I suffered from was rampant insomnia.  I'm not talking about having trouble sleeping/staying asleep, I mean I was quite literally awake for a long periods of time; the longest was a nearly 72-hour period.  I was at the point of hallucinating.  I certainly wasn't rational and I probably shouldn't have been driving myself back-and-forth to treatment because I sure I was legally impaired It was awful.  In desperation, I turned to my oncology nurse for advice and she recommended melatonin.  She said that it was a safe, natural supplement that would not interfere with treatment or any of the other drugs I was taking.  And it did the trick.  That night I slept for 18 hours.

    HI everyone, I just watched Dr Oz, he had a doctor on who said 6 mg is 6x the recommended dose and said we should only need and take 1mg. Otherwise we are over dosing on the sleep hormone.  Given it should peak in the evening, they warned about taking extended release and taking it throughout the night. Only 1 mg a approx 2 hours before bed is what this doctor stated is appropriate.

    Wow thanks for all the info guys. Thanks to everyones input going by all your responses I am thinking of maybe taking 1-2mg and taking the normal one. To make matters worse I am not having trouble with my left ear having tinnitus so I am being kept awake by a low noise that is really distracting!

    I think I was initially worried about taking a new supplement as you know what its like with BC I am permanently worried about having too little or too much estrogen and was worried about taking any type of hormone. However as you all say it has also been shown to reduce tumours and the risk of them.

    One other thing I would like to know before all this I was considering sleeping tablets and don't wanna go down that route. Mainly because I hate the grogginess I feel all day after I walk round at work like a zombie and I find even natural herbs like cammomile or valerian root have the same effect - whats it like with the melatonin? Does it make you tired the following day?

    It makes me feel groggy the next day.  I know it doens't effect everyone that way.  Perhaps you should try it on a weekend night :)  Good-luck

    Thanks for that -problem with trying it on a weekend is I sleep late anyway then! I have just found out they are banned in the UK I can get them still but quite expensive how ridiculous to ban something that is just a hormone and not illegal! It makes you wonder if there is some conspiracy theory that the medics would rather we take pharmaceutical drugs!! One thing I did read is that tests on mice found they lived longer too on melatonin...hmmm explains a lot don't think the UK government want people living longer!

    Bexy we have the same problem here in Australua unless they are prescribed by your doc then they are expensive. To overcome this I buy then on the net and they are shipped to me. So far I have not had any shipment confiscated and I've been taking them for over two years.

    Now if the big pharma conspiracy theory were true then they would have been banned in the US, hotbed for conspiracy theories :) On a more serious note, melatonin doesn't make me groggy but it did give my dd strange dreams. I have heard a few others report this se. Hope you find a path to the land of nod soon.

    I've started 3mg melatonin in the last week.



    I was told (by a non medical aunt) that the pineal gland, which produces melatonin, is affected by electromagnetic fields and light, so turning on the light in the night or checking the time on your phone can halt your natural melatonin creation, as can being near electrical currents.



    Melatonin is supposedly lower in people who have or had cancer, wether this is a cause or effect I'm not sure. It's helping me sleep but dreaming about seeing our cat at the supermarket and other weird things has been slightly odd.

    It's also only available here on prescription or from the states in the post, but the dr was happy to prescribe it.

    Just chiming in for those who may see this thread - like others, melatonin was a life-changer for me.  Every since chemo, it had been a couple of years since I had slept for more than 2-3 hours straight. It was awful, and my QOL was terrible because I was always exhausted. I kept reading threads on BCO where women said melatonin had helped them, so I finally went to GNC and bought some.  Wow - I was able to sleep 5-6 hours straight!  And the best part was that even if I woke up because of a hot flash or other reason, I was able to get back to sleep much more quickly instead of being awake for a couple hours.  I had the weird dreams for a week or so, but then that stopped.  I could not believe what a difference melatonin made for me.

    I've been using 3mg almost daily for the past 5 years. I had strange dreams the first couple of times but that stopped and absolutely no groggyness in the morning. I take a couple of hours before bedtime and I can naturally fall asleep and stay asleep all night. Sometimes I wake but am able to go right back to sleep.

    Good grief. I woke up at 4:30 this morning, wide awake. I could NOT get back to sleep til around 8....slept for two hours and that was it.

    I have some Melatonin in the medicine chest...got it a while back but never used it. Since my dreams are like movies anyway, maybe I'll try some tonight!

    How long does it take to kick in? Does it have to build up in your system?

    Blessings I take mine about an hour before bedtime but I know others take it about fifteen minutes before bedtime. Try a time ans see how it worked for you.. Good luck! Hope it works well for you.

    Thanks again everyone, I think when someone had said it made them groggy the jury was out but now I am seeing some others of you saying it absolutely doesn't I guess everyone reacts differently so I am definately going to try them nothing to lose! I have found a website where I can get a bottle for £10 which is quite reasonable. Am going to try the valerian and the 5htp first as I have had them lurking in the cupboard as a back up though I heard 5htp can give very freaky dreams!!

    Just jumping in here late, in case anybody could use my info. 

    I go to a naturopath here in Canada - been to a couple of them and they both indicated melatonin was recommended.  As others have said, research has indicated that melatonin levels in BC patients is low, so I anticipate being on melatonin for ever.  It's also an anti-oxidant.  And yes, I'm taking it even on chemo. 

    Here's what my naturopath said about dosage.  Start with one pill - start with 3 mg (whatever the lowest level you can get).  Use same time EVERY night, just as you turn out the light.  NEVER take it in the middle of the night.  Keep lights out, anything illuminated turned off or around, curtains drawn tight.  Any light will stop the action of the melatonin.  Even if you go to the bathroom, do NOT turn on any lights.  If that dosage doesn't help you sleep, try 2 pills next night.  When you get to a dosage that makes you dopey in the morning, you've taken too much - no harm done but you've found your dosage - your dosage is 1 less than you took when you felt dopey.  Everyone is different - so dosage for one person won't work for another.  Although naturopath said usually dosage is 9 mg, but he's heard of folks who need more than that (20 mg is the most I've read about). 

    Just sharin'.

    So far, I'm not having much luck with the melatonin.

    In all the reports I've read, the standard 3 mg dosage is too much for many people, so it's suggested you start small - 1 mg.

    I took it every night at 8 or 9 pm, planning to be asleep by 11 pm. But I'm wasn't a bit sleepy, and I end up reading until much later.

    Then once I fell asleep, I woke up every few hours. My bedroom is dark, the clock radio glow is hidden, and I don't turn on lights if I go to the bathroom.

    I started with half a 3 mg tablet several nights in a row. No luck at all. Then I took the whole 3 mg tablet, and I started itching. I looked it up, and you can be allergic to melatonin. Great.....Undecided

    It seems I do much better with a Valium or a Benadryl. Drat!

    Blessings,  I mentioned in a post above that I wake up groggy the next day, what I didn't say was that I too have a restless sleep on Melatonin.  I have begun to cut the 3mg tablets in half as it has been suggested that the common doses are way too high for most. What I have noticed is I am able to fall asleep much faster-and that's about it!!  Maybe trying what Albertan suggests would help-keeping eyes closed after taking it.  Bottom line-I don't think it helps everyone, and like you, I do better on Ativan or an antihistimine :(

    Thanks, wenweb....I guess it was just too good to be true for me...Frown

    Last night I took an Atarax (antihistamine) and a nice healthy swig of my prescription Phenergan with Codeine cough syrup.... and only woke up once, slept great the rest of the time, AND didn't cough!!! Laughing

    Haven't tried Ativan...

    lol I bet you slept well with atarax + codeine! lol

    I took melatonin for a while during chemo at the advice of my onc's NP, and it was very helpful. She recommended taking anywhere from 3mg - 9mg at night. Taking 6mg did the trick for me. After a few weeks I stopped taking it and did fine, I think I just needed to get my body back on track.

    Update and question.  After my last post in December, I briefly went off Melatonin and found that the (few) hot flashes I was having stopped.  I have recently gone back on it (at the advise of my psychiatrist) and my (few) hot flashes have returned.  I am taking an even lower dose than I was before which was about 1.5mg-I was dividing a 3mg tablet.  The psychiatrist had me get 500mcg chewable melatonin from Trader Joe's.  It seems just as effective for aiding the falling asleep process, but the hot flashes??  Has anyone experienced this?

    When web, that's a new one on me, melatonin never effected my hot flashes one way or another. Interesting question though.

    I was taking melatonin as well, but then I saw something somewhere that said that melatonin can interfere with antidepressants because they both act on seratonin levels.  Anyone else heard this?
