Hi ladies,

Had neoadjuvent chemo, surgery and then 5 wks of post surgery chemo. Have 7 more infusions left before chemo ends but my veins gave up so got my port put in yesterday. I can honestly say it is more painful than the MX I had in Sept. Is it meant to be this sore? How long will the pain last? All I can say is OUCH!!

You may be sore for at least a week after the port placement.  I had my port placed during my UMX surgery.  My BS told me before the UMX surgery that the port area would probably hurt/be sore more than the UMX.  He was so right!!!!  Check with your onco to see if you can take some over the counter pain reliever (ie Advil/Motrin/Tylenol) to help with the pain/soreness.  It does get better.

I hope you asked the onco to prescribe some EMLA cream (lidocaine cream) that you can apply an hour before you go in for a round of chemo.  The EMLA cream will help numb the area so you won't feel the poke.  Most likely, you will need to wait to use the EMLA cream after the port suture has healed a little since EMLA cream can't be used on newly sutured skin.

Ice packs help with the pain, and did your surgeon prescribe a pain reliever?
