Charleston Bound, part 2

Re Charleston - I would definitely suggest that you look at the hospital rate at the Hampton Inn Historic District as I have been told it is about $89/night, with self - parking at $14/day. Do rent a car as you will need it to get to the hospital and it will make it easier for your daughter to come and go during your hospitalization. If you are staying in the Historic District you really won't need a car until you need to go to the hospital.
I understand that Stage II varies, but may require 1 - 2 nights in hospital. Dr. Massey will preform the surgery at Roper Downtown. It is in the hospital district, but there is not much "siteseeing" in that area. The surrounding neighborhoods have some beautiful homes, but the historic district is the place to be. There is valet parking at Roper for the day of your surgery which will make it much easier for your daughter. I am pretty sure that Dr. M's staff can tell you how to do that.
I second the statement "buses and taxies kind of suck". We do not have the best public transpo, but Charleston is a very walkable city. Things to see and do - take a carriage tour (they leave from the Market), take the gullah tour - a great way to learn about the amazing contributions of the African-Americans, walk to the battery and then walk the battery, wander around at White Point Gardens (South Battery), visit historic houses, drive to the plantations (Middleton, Magnolia and Drayton Hall are good choices). And, did I mention eat? Charleston is a foodies paradise and it is hard to go wrong at our restaurants. Some are very $$$, but many are really a great value for fab food. There is a huge Christmas Light display at James Island Park (gotta drive abt 30 min for this). Go to the Charleston Museum to see a lot of the funky stuff that makes Charleston uniquely Charleston (it is right near Hampton Inn). Go to www.CharlestonCVB.com and you will find lots and lots of info. You will have 3 amazing days.
I did not mention the beach, but with a car you can get to Sullivans Island in about 20 minutes. Isle of Palms is about 30. Folly Beach is very eclectic and funky and about 30 minutes.
Tell me what you might be interested in and I'll see if I may help. PM if you wish.
Betsy - can you give me any more hints on the hotel you stayed in? Market and Queen are parallel and that name doesn't ring a bell.

Flora-
Charleston is easy to get around being a small city You dont have to stay in downtown as you can stay in mt pleasant without parking hassles and fees and be downtown in 15 minutes.
It all depends on personal preferences and financial situation.
I prefer to stay close to the beaches, Shem Creek areas, shopping, versus downtown city. Though I definitely would take a day to see downtown. Weekends are busier downtown and harder to park. So great your surgery mid week. -
Flora, another suggestion for lodging is Priceline. I went for a check up in September and stayed at the Embassy Suites for $65 per night. I chose the are I wanted to be in, put in that I wantd a 3 1/2 star hotel and gave them the dates, area and my credit card, they came back with Embassy Suites. I would have had to take whatever they came up with but with 3 1/2 star I knew it would be pretty good. That price also fed us a cooked breakfast, a wine and snack in the early evening but also free parking. My daughter had used Priceline before and told me not to ask for 4 star because 4 star didn't have the free parking or breakfast.
I loved Charleston. Very easy to get around and so interesting.
Good luck! -
Thanks for all the info ladies. Pinkheart, we would definitely like to beach walk. Can anyone tell me what reasonable hotels are near the beach. It sound like I should rent a car, so I in that case I would prefer to stay nearer the beaches than downtown. Are there reasonable hotels near the beach in Mt. Pleasant?
-
Flora, try rhe Hampton Inn on the Isle of Palms Connector or Homewood Suites or Comfort Inn. All are on the straight run to the Isle of Palms where there is easy beach access and some nice restaurants. The hotels are about 20 minutes from Roper Downtown and may offer a hospital rate. From this location you are easily situated for both the historic district and beach. Should you stay in the historic district, you will be about 20 minutes from Isle of Palms. although Sullivan's Island is closer to the city, Isle of Palms is easier to park and get to the beach.
These are my suggestions, but there are many other options.
IOP Restaurants: Long Island Cafe, Huck's, Luke n Ollie's for pizza, Seabiscuit for breakfast, The Boathouse
Mt. P restaurants near the IoP hotels: Basil for contemporary Thai, Opal, Crave, Mosaic Cafe, Calders Pub, Gilligans for classic Southern seafood.
Sullivan's Island is connected to Isle of Palms by a bridge: Poe's for great burgers, Home Team for great barbeque, Atlanticville. -
Flora - I stayed in Mr. Pleasant at the Homewood suites during one of my surgeries. It isn't as close to Roper than others, but it is located near some shopping and not far from the beach. I paid a medical rate of $89.00 but that was last year. Also, their rooms are suites, so you have a Living room/kitchenette and separate bedroom. Also they offer a full hot breakfast daily and an evening dinner and drinks M-T which is pretty decent. you probably have to call them directly to see if they offer a medical rate. Here is there link.
Marty- you are a world of knowledge when it comes to Charleston and surrounding areas. It is so nice to have a BC.org member that is a resident there. THANKS!
Wish I was there now......just to eat and sight see!
-
Flora--
Was so thankful for three days of nice weather for beach walking!
Walked beaches at Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, and Folly Beach. After walking Folly Beach on James Island today we enjoyed sunset and then went to Festival of Lights 10 minutes away also on James Island. It's $12 per car and you drive through light displays and then park to walk paths with light dispays and can get food and go in building to shop Christmas decorations.
Going to Shem Creek tomorrow.
Possibly going to Middleton Plantation on Wednesday.
This all sure makes it hard to want to show up for pre-ops on Thursday!
Looking forward to meeting Cascader and sh-tn. -
I have a room booked at the Homewood Suites in Mt. Pleasant for my Stage 1 in January. The medical rate they gave me is $119 for a 1 bedroom suite. The East Cooper hospital website lists the medical rate as $89, but when I asked the guy I made my reservation with, he said that was an old rate.
-
The Hampton Inn Patriots Point n mt pleasant is $87 but not a suite. To get medical rate Dr Kline office had to fax them note I was a patient at East Cooper. I am just stayin there night before surgery to b closer for early drive. Stayin w friend in summerville. DH n I stayed there for stage one with same med rate in august which is busy season.
-
I am staying at home wood right now. $119 nt. even tho I miss breakfast every morning, it goes till 10am , and the dinners are decent, free beer and wine also. Lots of pretty walking areas, everything u need right here. Would recommend it
-
Oh, also wanted to say that I got a rental car for 8 days from Avis for only $ 107.00 total!!! Thru Costco , what a deal.
-
Holy cow what a great car deal and a great tip for future reference for stage 2B!
-
Marty... its across the street from Poogans Porch... corner of Meeting and Queen...(not Market) Mills House Inn http://www.millshouse.com/
-
Sorry Betsy, I finally figured that out. Mills House Hotel. My son worked there when he was in college as a bellman/valet - great tips. It is a wonderful property, but I generally don't recommend on the list as it can be quite costly especially since "in season" is now year round. There is another fabulous restaurant next to Poogans Porch - Husk.
-
Yes, Husk... Never ate there... it was pricey... seems to be a theme.
-
Yup. It is Charleston. High cost of living, but low wages. It is a privilege to live in paradise.
-
Cascader - Hope you are doing well. Was Stage II easier for you? What did Dr. Klein do?
-
Hi linda, stage 2 was definitely easier , except I had a worse time with the anesthesia. Rest of Recovery much easier. I am most ssore from lipo on my stomach but everyday it gets better. I had fat put into my butt donor site, it was harvested from the opposite cheek. It looks great now, hope it stays. I also had my recon breast shaped a little making it more round, but mostly it was lots of fat injections to the lower part and cleavage side. Not sure that makes sense. Also had a small lift to my natural breast for symmetry. I am very happy with results. I have one small fold in armpit that he couldn't fix this time. I will see how I feel in six months but I think it is probably something I can live with. I am flying home today, not looking I forward to a long day of travel . Thank you for asking . Met with pinkheart yesterday, so nice to talk with her in person . She is up next , and slh, you too??
-
Cascader, I am so happy this was easier on you. Darn that anesthesia! I was nauseious for 3 weeks. Happy Holidays!!
-
Well, still here in CHS since 10a this morn.lots of flights cancelled due to fog. Now booked tonite via ATL arriving SEA midnt. Ugh... Not fun. Time for another Oxy.
-
Cascader so sorry you are stuck. If there is any way they will put you up overnight and then you fly tomorrow? Once the fog sets in, it doesn't leave. Too much water around us.
-
Old retired travel agent here.....if it's an act of God then the airline usually won't put you up for the night. Sorry Cascader; that sucks. Sleep on the plane!
-
Oh no Cascader. Is there a hotel attached to the airport in case they don't go out until morning? You need to rest someplace. Take care of yourself and keep us updated.
-
Hi all. What a travel day!! I am safe and sound in a Seattle hotel, arrived midnt last night. I had ordered a wheelchair just in case, really didn't need it , but it certainly helped with getting my flights rerouted and baggage switched over. The lines were long, airport a mess. I am an ex airline gal so it helped to know the questions to ask, driving home soon ,,, over the river and thru the woods, 5 hrs and I will be back in my own bed. Ahhhh
Less than a week since surgery , feeling less sore but more bruised. Wearing compression girdle and no bra. Liking what I see so far.
Pinkheart, good luck tomorrow and I will be sending good thoughts of healing and great results. Keep us posted, you will do great! -
Forgot to ask. Can't remember but am I just supposed to let the tape over incisions just fall off on its own? Also wondering if compression girdle will hinder the fat grafting in my butt fonor site? Definitely do not want that.
Anyone? -
Cascader can you call Chris or Dr K and ask them, even email- they usually answer quickly. Would be good to know for all of us. Been thinking about you and your travel dilemmas, so glad you'll soon be home.
Pinkheart, thinking about you and your upcoming, hope all goes well, smooth and perfect. -
Yes, let the tape fall off. Don't pull it off.
-
Question: has anyone had to deal with change of insurance plans mid stream? Hubby told me his employer is changing ins companies starting 1/1/2013. My surgery is scheduled for 1/3/2013 with the MRA on the 2nd. Yikes!
I've been frantic. His HR said there should be no problem but I don't have the temporary card and enrollment numbers yet to give to Drs office yet!
I thought someone here had a similar problem wonder how it all worked out? -
Cascader, sure glad you are home safe and sound. What a horrendously long day for you. I know Jeskachi answered the tape question and I second it. Some parts will come off on there own and it is very tempting to pick at them, but don't. Yes, Call Klein's office about compression. I am thinking if they put you in compression you should wear it especially if you had lipo. You need a thong compression garment, LOL!
Good luck to the upcoming lineup: Pinkheat, Downey, Florafarm and winding up the year with Ms.Sherry. You are all veterans, so should do great. Will be thinking of all of on your day and beyond.
Marty, Just wondered how the Geni bra is working out. I'd like to get a couple of them to get me through the week. I am having some bleeding on one breast. Haven't a clue where it is coming from as there doesn't seem to be an opening. I sent Dr. M a picture and she said it is Old blood that has liquefied and looking for a way out. Not to worry, because it is old blood which is dark brown/wine colored and not bright red. Using Kotex to catch the blood and keep it clean. The tape was starting to irritate my skin, so Dr. M told me to use Kotex and my bra should hold it in place. It really does. That's why I want the Geni because it is stretchy similar to the ones I already wear.
-
Linda I am wearing the Genie bra and they are very comfortable to me. I suppose it depends on the shape of breasts and getting the right size.
Thinking of all the girls going in yet this month. Hugs to you and think positive affirmations. You are all going to do great.
