My mom's breast cancer, now in liver.
10 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with a mass. She received a mammogram and said it dissapeared. Well, she recently had a bowel obstruction and the doctor saw the mass in her breast. They immediately gave her chemo, in which she became violently ill. Entered the hospital with neutropenia. So it had to be stopped, as she is 85...too much for her age. She then had a right mastectomy with 22 lymph nodes removed, with radiation and hormones. This has been about a year. Today, we had to rush her to the hospital, because of nausea and pain in her stomach. She was told the cancer spread to her liver. So sad, she will be released to hospice. I wonder if the breast was never removed, would it have spread? She was living with the mass, with no side effects, until the doctor removed the breast.

Unfortunately, cancer has a mind of its own.
My moms breast cancer went to her bones and then liver, after a lumpectomy, chemo, and radiation.
I hope you and your mom will get comfort and strength. -
Sending you lots of love and hugs. xo

I think we all live with "what ifs," but I would suspect that the cancer was already spreading. A mastectomy shouldn't cause a spread at all. Try your best to be at peace with what was, and simply be there for your mother as best you can. Hugs to both of you, and please remember to take care of yourself during this time. I think sometimes that its actually harder on the family and caregivers than on the patient.

Thank you for all your replies. Unfortunately, my mom has slipped into a coma, mainly due to a bladder infection, that put her over the edge. Unable to intake water, and impossible to treat. She is on her 5th day of no food or liquid. She is tough, and knew it was the holidays...she would be upset that this happened to her. She said she needed to due Christmas shopping, before her coma...This is a tough time for anybody in this situation. I feel helpless. She is at her home, with just me and my husband...her only family. The nurses said, she wouldn't want it any other way, which is comforting.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Cancer is a sneaky, terrible disease-but dont put yourself through the agony of the "what ifs". My thoughts and prayers are with you-
