boosts after a mastectomy

Hi all!

I am currently undergoing radiation therapy after a bilateral mastectomy, no reconstruction. My margins were clean and I am grade 2. I was told 28 treatments and now I see the doctor ordered 5 boosts.

From everything I read boosts are not given after a MX.

Does anyone have any feedback regarding this issue? I am currently on treatment 20.

    Hi Pam!!!  I had the full five boosts; so that made a total of 33 and I had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction either. The 5 boosts were just to the mastectomy scar only. The reason being that if it is to come back, it likes to come back in the mastectomy line...at least that is what I was told anyways. I also had the clavical and underarm area done as well. I had 1.8, stage 2A, 1/17 nodes. I hope that this helps!!

    Editied to add that my margins were clean too. My RO showed me several studies from big cancers centers that showed lowered risk of local recurrance with women with similiar stats to ours; and faired better than woman who didn't have radiation--even with a mastectomy.
