Questions for those who have had a local recurrence...
1) How long after your primary diagnosis was your local recurrence found?
2) After the first local recurrence, have you had any more local recurrences? If so, how long between the two?
3) After the first local recurrence, did you go on to develop distant metastases? If so, how long between the two?
4) What is your ER status?
Thanks, just trying to figure out what's next...

1) My initial dx (DCIS and IDC) was in April 2008. Had 4 x AC, and 12 weekly Taxol with concurrent Herceptin, then just Hercepting and 30 rads. While still on Herceptin and in the midst of my rads, I was diagnosed with IBC. First symptoms were noticed in Jan. 2009 but everyone thought it was side effects from the rads. They kept telling me I had had so much chemo and rads that there was no way I could now have IBC. Actualy biopsy was not done until June 2009. So, I guess the answer to your first question is 9 months.
2) Have not had any additional recurrences.
3) No. It has been 3-1/2 years and it has not spread any further, praise God!
4) ER-/PR- and HER2+
Hope this helps you some. Good luck!

Hi Minxie,
I had a true local recurrence, less than a year after having a lumpectomy, AC chemo and radiation for uni-lateral, triple negative IDC. I found the new lump myself, and at first thought it was hardened tissue from radiation but as time went on it grew larger and became quite sore. By the time I had a mammo, ultasound and biopsy it was almost a year to the date of my first diagnosis that I got the second dx. The pathology was identical, and the location very close to the lumpectomy site, those two factors are what made it a TLR and not a new primary.
The recommended treatment was mastectomy and AT chemo. My original dx was in Jan. 2008, 2nd Jan 2009. As of today I have no other recurrence and no sign of mets. After a failed SGAP reconstruction in 2009 I just had a successful DIEP in June. I plan on still being here in Jan 2013, which is 5 years from my original dx which is the magic number for triple negative!
One of the lessons I've learned the last 4 years is that despite similarities in diagnosis and treatment every person's body reacts differently to cancer and to the treatment. We cannot pin our hope or despair on anybody else's experience. Hang in there!

Glostagirl,
That last paragraph is so, so true! -
Thanks Faith and Glosta. I'd been doing well over the summer, and then the panic struck, again. Will it come back again? When? Next month? Will I get 3 years again? I hate it and there's so little data... It's very nice to see the two of you swimming through life without any return of this evil thing. Thank you!

12 years after my tn. local reurrence
-
I had a local recurrence after radiation & almost 5 years on Tamoxifen. I was ER positive both times. I just was diagnosed with a new primary in the other breast but it this one is HER2 positive as well as ER positive & PR positive.
-
1) How long after your primary diagnosis was your local recurrence found? 19 years. But the docs are calling it a new primary (in the same breast) rather than a recurrence of the original.
2) After the first local recurrence, have you had any more local recurrences? If so, how long between the two? No, but I had a BMX the second time and it's only been about 9 months.
3) After the first local recurrence, did you go on to develop distant metastases? If so, how long between the two? So far, no.
4) What is your ER status? Triple negative both times.

I too was wondering about recurrence too.I was dxed with stage 1 grade 3 tn with clear nodes Aug 3rd this year mine is a new primary, I had bc 1999 er/pr positive in opposite breast.Sept 27th I had bilat mast. because of the cancer in right breast but on removing my left the also found 3mm ICIS so oncol said good thing I went for a dmx. Anyways been a month and I have pains all over and the swelling under my right arm as well as the muscle there is more swollen then it was when the dr saw it a week ago. Actually both drs said it was the fluid but it would reabsorb, but now it is looking worst, I'm getting mild stomach pains and my right shoulder is really starting to be painfull, thats why I've wondered if you can have mets a month after surgery? It may seem a bit quick but after having mri and ultrasound to find nothing 5 months later 1.8cm tnbc that the day my dr found the lump I had an hour before had a clear mammo also. Medical oncol said it was worrysom as my cancer had not showed on the tests and it was only because my rad oncol did an exam after my mammo that she felt it. So does that make a person susseptible (for lack of better word) to having a recurrence or mets so soon after dx. Geesh I haven't even started chemo, not until the 15th

I hear these horrid stories about recurrence. I can honestly tell you I cryed a river for like 7 months. Family told me I need therapy. I had the chemo C/T and surgery. My nodes were clear and tissue removed also and also the margins. When first found in June I had every scan under the moon and then again in October.
I feel a little lost . First they said Chest Wall recurrence then surgeon said once she went in she thought its not . Ribs were clear and sternum and all the other places that would signify such. Then not sure if its a new cancer. Its like your left in limbo.
My first bout was 12 years ago. I am TN. I will have Radiation soon. Been looking around this site for similar stories but you dont find many. I have a Local recurrence and then again maybe not they say because its been so long. Actually thats the best factor I was told that its been 12 years. I know a lady in NJ who recurred 7 times she refused chemo every time. Last time they finally forced Masectomy on her. We speak on the phone and she is very funny anf has this great attitude. She also had cervical cancer way back. She cheers me up.
