Starting chemo November 2012

Hi girl, its 4 am & here I am visiting you. Been down for a few days with fatigue and the aches from the neulasta and like Megan i also am having episodes of" chemo brain". Tried to go to walmart yesterday and lasted 2 minutes, walking in sloooow motion like a zombie! no driving for me either.. My butt hurts from running to the bathroom and once again there is "fire down below"! Need to get some clear aloe gel..Head is tingling so I am getting prepared for round 2 of hair loss... Girls get yourself one of those lint rollers with the tear off tape, you will need it, when the hair goes
. Wishing you all a good day. />Miss you girls, I am keeping up with everyone's posts but I am using an iPad and can't type so fast, thats why I've been a little "quiet" ---love ya girls! -
I've been up since about 5am. Can't seem to sleep without taking Ambien CR. Not like me before chemo but now????
5Luvbugs - glad to hear from you!! Thank you again for the tips. We seem to have similar SEs so I'll stock up on the yogurt again. I think I'm a week behind you on chemo schedule. Sorry you are having to do the bathroom trips. Hope you get some relief soon!
Sickofpink - I love it when the doctors give me percentages. I understood the need for the chemo when mine told me 20% chance of recurrence vs. 2 to 5% chance with it. It made the decision a no brainer. Wondering if those will change now that I found out that I am BRAC 1 positive?? I sure hope not!
I finally found a wig!!!! Lost about 50% of my own hair already. You know it's bad when you blow dry your hair and it starts flying around your head.
Seriously considering buzz in it to just get it over with but I'm wondering if that will make my head more tender. Are you girls wearing anything under your wigs???
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday with minimal SEs. Sending hugs to you all!!!!

I'm on day 5 of my first treatment, first couple of days I had so much energy, now I can barely move. I am going to pick up the wig I bought, she is cutting it exactly the way mine is now. I feel like if I wear it before I need it I might get used to it and not freak out as bad. I have to say the TE are my biggest complaint right now, they are only filled half way but drive me nuts while I'm sleeping...so much pressure. I'm considering not filling them anymore since eventually I am doings diep flap. I am taking the Claritin for the neulesta plus taking the compazine a couple of times a day and the aches and nausea have stayed away. They only gave me steroids for first couple days plus the emend. Wishing everyone a SE free day!
-
TXjundbug...was just here to ask the same question....I cant get comfortable because of the TEs and just cant sleep good...SO sick of it..I need to sleep to get through this! What at others on TC doing?? I only get steroids at time of chemo so it has been a week....

While I am sorry that you are all having trouble with fatigue, driving, etc. thank you for making me feel more normal by letting me know you are fighting it also. Mouth is sore and feels huge, using the rinses. Nausea under control but have stomach cramps. Have not been back to work yet; this is the 4th day after chemo and I have no idea how to do that. For those of you who are and to the non stop mommies, please be so careful with yourselves; I don't know how you are doing it but you are my heroes. I tend to be the one who pushes through everything then I hit a wall when I can't take it anymore but this has seriously kicked my butt.
To you ladies dealing with the hair shedding, I am sorry; I know it's gonna happen but I can only imagine the letdown when it really does and my heart aches for you as much as my own.
I am not receiving the Neulasta shot unless doc feels necessary. Blood gets drawn on Thursday so time will tell. I feel fortunate not to deal with the added bone pain as I already have enough aches and pains but am also nervous that levels will be too low. Any one else's doc automatically skip the shot?
-
Regardless of the nausea, please everyone have a piece of chocolate for me. Today it's my birthday!
I already had chocolate cake, we go out for dinner and then I'll drink some bubbles. Tomorrow I go for the 2nd dose, so I'd better enjoy now
-
Happy birthday Eleni! I will be singing to you and have a few Hershey kisses w almonds ...I could eat chocolate every day... Hope you feel good enough to eat cake and enjoy whatever you do xoxo
-
Good Morning, Everyone....
Happy Birthday, Eleni! Enjoy your day!
Looks like a few of us are hitting the wall....and to those who are having discomfort due to the TEs, so sorry :-(. My dreaded heartburn is returning a little bit and some cramping.
I'm praying and sending positive thoughts that we all get thru this week QUICKLY! I'm thankful that my inlaws are here to help us with the kiddos. -
Happy Birthday Eleni! I will eat chocolate for you!
-
Happy Birthday Eleni!
-
Happy Birthday Eleni! I ate some chocolote for you!
-
Happy Birthday Eleni!!!
I've never liked dark chocolate until my husband brought me a DOVE, DARK CHOCOLATE candy bar. He meant to get milk chocolate and grabbed the wrong one by mistake. I'm so glad he did! It's now my favorite.
I'll eat a DOVE BAR for your birthday my Dear Eleni!
Blessing

Happy birthday Eleni!
Feeling tired today. Have been out shopping with my mum which was an effort. I just can't be bothered to do or think about anything, not even simple things like deciding how much milk to buy.
I just want to sleep as I've little interest in anything else yet I'm not sleepy enough. I hate this stage of the cycle. I skipped day 3 of my dexamethasone and yesterday went straight to tapering off with just 8mg once a day and 4mg today. Bit fed up but not feeling like I want to die yet so good sign. Might do 4mg tomorrow again before moving down to 2mg.
Hair very vulnerable right now. Coming out in proper clumps but still mainly from the top where cap doesn't fit. It makes a change for my flat to be covered in my own hair rather than just cat hair.
Not had bowel movement since chemo on Friday so worried about getting constipated. Am reluctant to take senna like last time as I couldn't keep off the toilet. Will maybe wait a couple more days. I am having some wind so guess that's a good sign.
Not so much of a nasty taste this time. Just the weird sensation/taste from steroids which shouldn't last long. Have got my anti fungal ready for thrush though.
Wishing you all the best with minimal SEs! -
Other TC ladies..tell me what to expect the next 2 weeks...I haven't felt perfect since chemo..but not horrible...Just this awful thick tongue (does that last the whole time?) and crampy belly and heart burn...will it go away this week so I have 1 week of feeling a bit normal??? I keep thinking next cycle this will be Christmas day...I hope with some advil and stuff I can function and be around family...(just hope they are all healthy!)
-
Hey keetmom. The first week after TC #1 was the worst. I had diarrhoea, oral thrush (that might also be your problem - many of us seem to have had it) nasty taste and just bleurgh. After a week/ten days I felt absolutely normal again. I don't know if that will happen every time as the effects will be cumulative I guess but hopefully you'll at least get to feel 'normal' for Christmas. I have TC #3 on Dec 21st. :-(
-
I'm getting the crampy belly right now. Don't feel I can go to the toilet but something is definitely going on in there.
I suffer with terrible heartburn anyway but it's been worse since Friday's chemo. -
Hate the crampy belly Michelle...Just ran to Walgreens to get Prilosec as the heartburn is bad...
Ive dealt with Thrush with my dd before...and I don't think it is that...but who knows...I am using biotine...
Glad to think I am getting close to feeling normal... -
Happy Birthday Eleni!!!!!
Keetmom - my MO has me rinsing with 1 tsp of salt and 2 tsp of baking soda in 4 cups of water. Gargle and swish 3 times a day and before bed. It really helped me when I thought I was getting thrush.
I took control over the hair issue today. After having to unclog the drain and handfuls of hair while shampooing I decide it was enough. Blow dry and I have hair flying all over the bathroom. DH buzz cut it while DD held my hand and DS made jokes to keep me laughing. Didn't cry just did it. Feels wierd. I realized afterwards just how much I look like my dad. Funny never really saw that before but do now. DH told me he was proud of me and told me how brave I was. That made me tear up. All in all it's been a very good day.

I want to know does anyone else have bumps on there head? I do and they hurt where the hair has fallen out I have bumps like clogged pores kind of???? It really hurts. oh yea and I passed a stone that was over 4mm yea I hope I don't repeat that any time soon I have some smaller ones that still need to come but the big one is gone.
-
Itmguy - ouch kidney stones!!!! sorry you're having to deal with that too. I don't have bumps on the scalp but it does feel like it's slightly sunburned.
My chemo is on Friday the 7th.
Wish me lucky tomorrow. Wearing the wig for the first time. Not looking forward to the looks.
-
Itmguy~one of my dear friends on this forum had the red bumps on her head. She said they lasted about a week. It's (I believe) inflamed hair follicles. It gets better.
Txjunebug~Since thrush is a type of yeast infection, I wonder if eating yogurt or taking acidophilus would help to prevent it. Does anyone know?
Blessings

Thought I was wearing my big girl panties through this whole thing except for minor occasions. I just went to the bathroom, washed and dried my hands, ran my hand through my hair and CLUMPS starting coming out. It hasn't stopped. I changed back to my little girl panties and have not stopped crying. I mean over HAIR! Really? And this was something I expected!!! I feel like an idiot.

Happy birthday eleni! Ill take my ulcer meds and toast u with dark chocolate later!
Oh mary, hair is hard! Kinda fun tp play with hats n scarves and online windowshopping for lil earrings . Kinda.
Txjunebug my doc prescribed glutomine (?) for mouth so far not awful.
Using iphone alarm for meds every few hours, helps.
Walked today with hat over buzzed head and ran into bradley cooper -he must visit nearby but has said hi twice.. Made me keep walking(with friend) too long, now im paying for it, ha.
Best wishes for real night of sleep...

Itmguy - YIKES! Kidney stones? Sorry to hear about that, horrible to have stones passing on top of everything else. And still you have the mental faculties to make the chemo list - impressive!
Eleni -Happy birthday!! Hope the cake tasted ok - you should get to have your cake and eat it too:)
To all those who are in the heavy hair shedding phase - somehow, that is really hard, even if "its just hair". I gave in yesterday too, buzzed it off (but didn't shave) so my 5 year old DD took one look and said "Mom, you look ugly". Nice! The ten year old burst into tears, and my three year old wouldn't look at me the first hour and then seemed to forget about it. Then I went to work in the wig, and boy, was that a lot of awkward interactions. How is it going for everyone else starting to wear their wigs or scarves out and about? Are you getting suppportive reactions from others, silence because people aren't quite sure what the right thing to do/say is? Just think, give us another 6 months and we will be comparing re-growth length.
Can't wait to get on the plane tonight and get number two over it with this week.
Nancy - I finally have energy again. It came back yesterday, on day 19.... But better late than never!
-
Yoga is the one place I go bald and wow I can't believe the support I get! I am out and about with just caps and scarves as waiting for my wig but I find that everyone seems supportive. I am not silent about it either. I like my big gold earrings too with scarves and wigs.
Megan, I will think of you in Singapore and hope all goes well for #2. Do I have it right that you have a sister there?
itmguy, hope those stones pass soon!

My hair started falling out like crazy on day 15. A couple days of that was all I could take. Just couldn't handle it everywhere. So got out the clippers and buzzed it off. Not shaved right to the scalp, but the next closest setting. It did not hurt even though my scalp was tender. So, the hair was still falling out like crazy, but little bitty pieces, instead of chunks like a longhaired dog was shedding all over the house! LOL. Little pieces are better, except they are prickly. The lint roller was my new best friend. But it's hard to get those pieces out of fleece beanies. Funny thing is, not all the hair fell out. Maybe 95%? And what's left seems to be hanging on pretty well.
I do have a wig, but feel funny in it, like people are going to know it's fake or like I'm worrying about it slipping out of place, or even coming off. I wear it places like to church and to nice restaurants, not much else. I have soft fleece hats for around the house and for sleeping in, warmer knit hats for outside, and was wearing scarfs and bandanas a lot before the near-bald stage set in, but now those aren't warm enough and they tend to slip around on my head. A bandana under a baseball cap works pretty well, if caps are your thing. Where I live it's getting pretty cold out now, so nobody seems to think anything of it when you go around in a warm knit or fuzzy hat. I haven't really gotten much in the way of funny looks or insensitive comments - just a few.
I was also told (probably here, LOL) that the less hair you have the bigger earrings you should wear. I was never one for "blingy" jewelry at all, just little bitty post earrings at most, but I've been having fun experimenting with big hoops and dangly earrings and I find that I like them after all. :-)

I found it empowering to finally take control of the hair and buzz it. Didn't think I would but never shed a tear. Feels odd but so much better than the clumps and handfuls falling out. You just have to get to that point where you've had enough of the fallout.
Wearing my wig today to work. Have received several complements from the girls. The guys just look at you they don't know what to say. It's okay because I wear it for me and not anyone else.
-
Junebug I am here I felt the same way.... I know what you mean the falling out was awfull but the buzzing was empowering weird??? right. Now I am on hold because I have bumbs on my head that hurt. I am proud of you. Man do we grow some balls through all of this. The journey that we are on in a way is a lucky one.
