Hi. Am new to the boards, but have been reading several and find them very helpful. I was diagnosed with Her2+, Stage 3 cancer in Dec of 2011. Had sentinol node biopsy done, removed 10 nodes, 9 were cancerous. The tumor was at the base of the left breast and on the chest wall. Had a mastectomy, and started AC treatments. After 2 treatments I had severe reactions to the chemo. Turned neutropenic, had blood clot that went to foot and am still not able to walk on it, 7 months later. (Almost had to have it amputated.) Also ended up with a pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and was within minutes of not making it. Spent 25 days in hospital on IV's. Also ended up with a fistula, and colostomy. All caused by the Adriamycin/Cytoxin. So, I cannot have chemo ever!! I have had 5.5 wks of radiation, and am on my 7th (out of 17) Herceptin treatments. I cannot have the taxol that is usually given with the Herceptin. I was wondering if anyone else has had just the Herceptin with no other drug for this type of cancer? If so, how far out from treatments are you? I actually feel much better now, and am just very thankful to be here to even ask for help..Thanks for any info.

Hi
I had left sided DCIS in 2006 (opted for mastectomy after a lumpectomy didnt give clear margin). Told that i didnt require any radiotherapy or chemo as node disection showed no involvement. Then exactly 5 years later I found a lump (missed by my scans) and the lump 11mm was just to side of breastbone on left side again. This time I moved all my care to a more specialist cancer unit to try and give myself the best treatment I could and got a second opinion from the team as I felt my breast surgeon was over-treating me. I had lumpectomy with clear margins - apart from side of tumour nearest to my ribs where it was just shy of a clear margin. Also the tumour was Her2 positive but hormone negative. I was advised by oncologist to have taxotere chemotherapy 4 rounds and also 17 lots of Herceptin. Then 15 radiotherapy. The first session of chemo immediately put me into anaphylactic shock/allergic reaction so a few hours later they retried it at much slower dose which worked. My second chemo the reaction was so much worse, couldn't breath and swelled up etc so the onco told me that I couldn't have it anymore. I said I didn't feel sufficiently covered with no chemo so asked him what other chemo I could have. Can't remember name of it but it was harsher one that would give more side effects. This chemo went in ok but within an hour I was so unwell that the onco said he's taking the decision out of my hands and not giving me anymore chemo - that I'd given it a good go but that it would end up doing me more harm than good (that was last summer). He said that it was the Herceptin that I needed which is more beneficial at ridding the cancer than the chemo - that the chemo was only giving me extra 2-3 per cent protection (I wanted every little bit I could get to tackle it). So in the end I only had 1 chemo and all of my herceptin. Someone I know refused to have chemo as she is single parent an couldn't cope again with it (her second time Aswell). She is now on her 4th out of 5 years on herceptin alone. I finished my herceptin 5 months ago. Sorry it's a bit jumbled but first time been on here in long time and my brain is no longer focused so much on my treatment. X -

I am new to this site but a long termer. I have been on herceptin since 2004. Sometimes with chemo sometimes without. I have had liver mets 3 times. One of those times was resolved with herceptin alone. Hope this helps. Never give up hope.
