whey protein!
I've been trying to figure out best sources of protein since being diagnosed. I had heard a few things some contradictory about soy, whey, nuts, and seed, but this is a recent article that i found interesting. check it out.

Thanks for posting that as it reinforced why I use it.

Hi Chrissy, I so wish i had started using it earlier. I had a smoothie this evening with a large scoop of whey protein and it was like instant nuritition, that has been so obviously missing in my diet. This is a protein i can safely lean, that will also add to my daily protocol for bc.
-
Hi Lightandwind smoothies are just one way to use your whey. You can use it to make a nutritious chocolate ball for snacks that are also healthy.
-
I drink a whey shake everyday, with a splash of pure blueberry juice, banana, couple of strawberries , chia powder, zero % fat plain yogurt, l-glutamate and lots of crushed ice. All ingredients were cleared with MO.
I lost my appetite in February, so Dh made this every morning for us both, and mine sat in the fridge until I felt like drinking it. I loved it all through surgery and chemo. It tastes like a milkshake and I used to feel like it was a treat, not healthy and nutritious. Still love it! Saved my life through mouthsores, (min),taste changes and overall chemo madness.
Glad to read that study!
crissyb, I would LOVE your recipe for chocolate balls

Thanks for sharing this article with us! I'm also a daily user of whey protein, and noticed a difference when I started taking it. Love making smoothies with it...throw in some blueberries or whathaveyou, and it's delicious!

Recipe for Chocolate Protein Balls
330grams raw whole almonds
60grams whey protein powder
16 pitted fresh dates
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon natural vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Splash of water (if required)
Coconut for rolling.
Method
Place Almonds, whey powder, cocoa powder in a food processor and process until ground. Add cinnamon and dates and process until it all comes together. Use a little water if your mix is too thick but it needs to be the texture that is firm enough to hold its shape. Roll into balls and then in the coconut. Keep refrigerated until use. Enjoy!
These are delicious, healthy and very filling!! -
*drool* thanks chrissyb, can't wait to make these!!!
-
drooling here too! Gonna have to try these. Thanks Chrissy!
-
Thanks for this article! The holistic dr recommended this but I never got any. What brand do you ladies use? It says at the end that it has to be processed a certain way. Does the container have that info? Thanks!

I just ordered a 2lb can of Bluebonnet Whey Protein from Amazon for about $39. It is organic and micro-filtered and has 26 grams of protein per serving. I have been using a vegan protein mix in my smoothie, but I'm switching back to whey. I used whey all throughout chemo.
-
Thanks SB, I guess microfiltered is the good kind then! I will check the stores then if I don't see what I want go to amazon.

My cousin who knows EVERYTHING about nutrition recommend whey protein after my radiation when I was so tired. I found it very helpful and I still use it. My cousin also said to make sure and get it "un denatured" (a way of processing it.) It's hard to find, but now I get it at Whole Foods. Great to know, if this article is for real, that it has anti cancer properties too!

Dr. Block recommends whey protein highly in Life Over Cancer. He definitely discourages casein, which is the other part of milk protein and very pro-cancer. Casein is why doctors recommend giving up dairy - it's REALLY not good for you.
-
Sweetbean, that is interesting, because I was wondering what exactly the bad thing about dairy is. Do you know what casein does that is bad in terms of cancer?
-
Momine......if you go to Livestrong.com....you will find a whole explanation about casein and cancer.
-
Thanks!
-
I found this on the Livestrong website. Are there more articles that address casein and cancer specifically Scottiee?
In "The China Study," Dr. T. Colin Campbell explains the apparent link between the occurrence of cancer and consumption of animal protein. What he was able to find was that casein --- which is 85 percent of the protein in dairy --- promoted cancer in all stages of its development. He concluded that the only safe protein was plant-derived protein. The amount of cancer growth could be controlled based on the amount of casein in the diets of the laboratory animals.
This indicates that cancer could be avoided by shunning animal proteins, specifically casein. Other studies are still researching the subject so there is no conclusion as to the link between casein and cancer. When drastically changing your diet, be sure to consult your health professional. -
And this... While casein appears to be immune suppressive, Drs. Elson Haws and Buck Levin, authors of "Staying Healthy with Nutrition", maintain that whey supports the function of the immune system.
-
When I have a bit more time, I'll find the references in Life Over Cancer and share them. (I'm totally crunched for time right now.) He has a blog at lifeovercancerblog.com where he may talk about it - not sure. But yes, he has also found that casein, and thus dairy, is very cancer-promoting.
-
I got some whey protein at the market yesterday and I can't believe how good it makes the smoothies taste! I got Bobs Red Mill because that was what they had and I'm impatient. I hope its a good brand that will give me the benefits because I'm really liking the smoothies now as opposed to tolerating them.
-
I have been using SISU brand of whey protein for two years now, mainly in my morning smoothie. The label says microfiltation, un-denatured, cross-flow ultrafiltration...must be the right type. I use the French Vanilla flavour and it is delicious. It may be only available in Canada.
Great to hear there is lots of benefit from whey protein.
-
I bought the Natural Factors, Whey Factor, non-denatured and microfiltered, natural vanilla flavor. I put a scoop in the blender with a banana and water, nothing else, and it was sooo delicious, yummy and velvety smooth. What a treat!

Thanks for this info concerning whey protein! When I went to the Block Center I was given a notebook with info. It refers to milk protein as having 80% casein which can stimulate tumor development and 20% whey, which helps raise glutathione levels and inhibit cancer. Says to use micro filtered whey protein!! I also went to MD Anderson last week and spoke to dr. Lopez ,who is part of the Integrative Medicine center....he too agreed with my use of Whey Protein! Thanks again for this added info....you all are so knowledgeable!!!
