-
Glad you made it, 3bears!
Nancy - I have to confess, I know the name Leon Russell, but couldn't name a single song. I do know enough to know he's not related to Nipsy Russell, though!
Shel - you'll be staying less than a mile from where I work. If you have lots of money, the Somerset Mall (at Big Beaver and Coolidge) is a beautiful mall. I have a friend named Silvana, too. I've never heard of anyone else with that name before. The really weird thing is that she was born in Canada.
Irene -
Nancy - Can you put me down for a shirt (large)? Thanks!
-
i looooooove somerset, but oakland mall will have to do.......been off for 7 months! lol!
-
btw, my "sil" is not originally from windsor.........she's macedonian with an absolutely wicked sense of humour that rocks me to my knees daily!.........we are classified as "trouble squared" at work!.......the floor is fairly "quiet" lately in my abscence..........but "i'll be back" lol!
i just can't wait to meet you all!!!!!!!!! i geuss i'm getting a little pumped! -
Sphynx - I am lurking on your thread, because I am Team Capt for our Race for the Cure, here in St Louis on 6/10. Today was our last day to reg and I ended up with 32. Because the website was so busy and slow, thay may be extending it.
Anyhow, why I decided to post is because I LOVE Leon Russell. He was just here, twice recently. I had to miss both shows. A Song for You is one of my all time favorite best songs! I couldn't believe when I heard Elliot sing it on American Idol. I am 43yo, and I am showing my age too. BTW I have 12th row for ME, when she comes to St. Louis in July. Good Luck on race day. Have fun! -
We had 5 more people sign up last night and as of right now, we have 25 on our team. We have new members from age 15 to 89!!!
I talked to 3Bears last night for quite a while (it was so nice and she is such a sweetheart!). Besides her sister, she has several friends joining our team. Im not sure if it is the family above or not. Ill figure it out today and send the count of t-shirts to bc.org.
Christine, I didnt even know that Leon Russell was still around. Im much older than you and most people never heard of him. I haven't been following American Idol so Im sorry I missed that. I love A Song For You and Lady Blue gives me goosebumps. The night I got the news I had bc. My husband did something very strange for him. He turned out all the lights, put on a candle, put on our old vinyl album of Leon Russell and held me in the dark. We both sobbed like babies. There were no words, just raw emotion. I get teary thinking of it. On a funnier note, my mother-in-law asked the polka band that we had at our wedding if they could play some Leon Russell for me. She got the band so she was trying to be nice!
Ok that was then, so now... I really hope we are not competing for the banner since it is the same day!! Shoot. You have a wonderful size team. I have been monopolizing the get-together section and announcements all over the place and missed that you had this event coming up. Tell us how it goes and give us tips on how to pull this off. What is your plan for meeting and distributing the t-shirts. Is your group wearing the Komen shirts or bc.org shirts? Who is your celebrity person who will be there? Well, we got the CRAZY JACKET at least! Were you trying to get that? Have a wonderful time at your ME concert also! Thank you for posting. Dont mean to have my private love fest of Leon! -
Hi Sphynx-log onto
Leon Russell
click on touring dates, he will be in MI on July 14.
I will follow up on the outcome of our RFTC. As of yesterday we only had 40000+ participants, we are going for 63000, to beat Denver as the largest race. -
Hello, Sphynx...My friend (a bc survivor) and I have registered for the race. We are both looking forward to the big day. Is everyone meeting in the survivor's tent? and if so, what time? It would be great to meet all of you. Sincerely, Tonya
-
Wonderful Tonya! It will be nice to meet you. The plan right now is to meet at the survivor's tent. If that changes, I will let everyone know. I will probably be there as early as 7:00 a.m. There is a teem meet lot but I am not sure about where it is and how far from the tent. You can't miss the tent.
If you and your friend would like bc.org t-shirts, send me a private message with your sizes and I'll put you on the list.
I received a message from bc.org about the t-shirts and they may be short on some sizes. We'll see what we get.
I cleaned my messages - sorry if you couldn't send me a PM because it was full. I still have my messages from Sprite. I just cannot bring myself to delete them.
Thanks for the link Christine! -
Hello Old Friends!
Well, I am almost ashamed to show my face...it's been so long. I was so overwhelmed when I started to student teach in January - April, that it was all I could do or think about. It was exhausting, but I did it...I graduated from UMD about 2 weeks ago, and have been subbing alot since. I am a teacher!
I still see a lot of familiar names here...Nancy, Anna, Candi, Lorianne,....hope all of you are doing well.
It is great that you all are walking this weekend. You all have a good time. I will try to pop in to say hi more often!
Judy B. -
Congratulations Judy! Welcome to the profession. I was hoping to exit this year, but with home values so depressed in Rochester, I have to keep working till I turn 62 or drop whichever comes first.
Ann -
Thanks Ann. The shoe is on the other foot for me...the job situation around here for teaching is terrible, I'd be lucky to find a job. Luckily for me, I hope, my local district is doing a buyout for early retirees. Almost 30 have signed up already, so I hope I can get in.
Judy -
Nancy-Thanks for sharing your story with us...my heart almost broke. I remember one night, the first night (funny but I never thought the darn tests would be positive...ever!) and my husband and I were traveling on my business trip to Chicago. After sharing a few glasses of wine and talking to many family members on the phone, he finally managed to fall asleep in our nice hotel room. Not me, I went into that bathroom and wept for hours. The fear of the unknown I guess. But that was along time ago...two years and four months.
Judy B.-Congratulations GF!!! I am excited that you finished your degree. I am anxiously awaiting 12/16 when I will be done.
I talked with Conniesue and she is going to try to join via the telephone. Our group is growing by the day...and this is exciting. Who cares about the formal prizes.
I hope all is well. I am down in Dalls braving 95 degree heat...for a week long training session. Ugh! -
Judy It is SOOO GOOD to hear from you! I sent you email messages that bounced back. From your other post I see you are still fighting fatigue. Its just not right to get through this and then feel crappy. I know that my fatigue hung around for what seemed like forever. I think I can say that I have more good days than bad finally. Its like two steps forward and one step back.
Ok the walk isnt this weekend but June 10th. You could still join us! No one has to walk sit back and enjoy yourself or take the trolley. We are getting the banner again. Remember, you were the one that got it last time, lugged it around and mailed it back for us.
About the job market for teachers. I know it is terrible. DH has been trying to get closer to home for years. His resume is stellar and he doesnt even get called in for interviews for the few posting they have. Maybe starting out is better in that respect because the pay scale is lower. Awful truth. So, if you have the same fields of certification, when he finds something on the West side, you can have his East side position. Lets make a trade. Be sure to get listed on mireap.com. I check that almost daily for him.
The 89 year old gentleman joining us is planning on walking. He is putting all of us to shame!
His son and (yes, that is 3 generations) of the family joined our team as friends of 3bears. Their story is very touching but Ill let 3bears tell you about it. His son says he walks daily.
Not Me, after I posted my story I kinda regretted it because it was such a downer. But, what a difference three years makes. I think we all have that experience. I wonder about those that havent had a chance to cry. I think I would have blown if I didnt. I know what you mean about not expecting the test to be positive and how the call felt like a sucker punch to the stomach! Have fun in Dallas! 95 degrees is my kind of weather!
Pretty please get Conniesue and anyone else who wants to join our team to do it. It doesnt matter at all to me if we get a prize for anything. That is a rather weird accolade to have the most survivors!!! Lucky us, what a club we have. (Sarcastically said.)
But, if you look at it this way, we did have the most survivors. Bear with me this is the nerd in me. Last year, New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church won the prize of the most survivors. They had 803 members with 35 survivors. That is 4.4% of the group. So, we have 25 members on the Komen list with 10 survivors and that is 40% of our team! Damn.
xxxooo

Every day is a gift Does it have to be a pair of socks? Tony Soprano -
Nancy
Hi! Sorry about my email...forgot to change my email address when I switched internet companies last year. It's changed now!
Your husband is a teacher...is he elementary or secondary? I am hoping to at least get an interview here in Garden City, I really want to work here, been here for 20 years. I am enjoying being a sub, though. It's pretty flexible, which is good for me for now.
I looked at the website for the walk, and I'm not sure if I will walk or not, but maybe I can make it down there to say 'hey'. I'll let you know as it gets closer.
Chris, Hi, good to hear from you again! Where are you going to college? December will be here before you know it, it goes really fast. I'm going to really miss school, I enjoyed it.
Talk to you all later
Judy -
Nancy,
Alexandra's Race Packet came in the mail yesterday and you would have thought it was Christmas around here. She was so excited, she wanted to wear the shirt right away and of course the pin too, she was sorry to see that her race number was 4866 and not 1.
kats -
please add "silvana dinevski" to our roster, she signed up last night..........she's running with us! well i'm walking, but you know what i mean! her email is sdinevski@sympatico.ca in case you need to tell her anything.........otherwise we'll meet ya'll there, we're staying at the troy hilton the night before if anyone wants to join us for a cocktail!!
-
I think the boards were buggy this weekend. I wrote a message and lost it! I saved this one...I guess better late than never.
Irene and I helped pack up the team packets and picked up our own and then stuck around and put together some other teams. Everything should be all set since we had 3 of us checking each package. We had a good time and I think you would have gotten a chuckle out of our "counting methods." Let's just say, it has something to do with chemo brain.
We got to meet "racelady" Jan and several of the other ladies whose names you see on the Komen site. They still do not know who the celebrity will be. There is a hint that Melissa Etheridge will be in town for the 3 day later in the summer and "maybe" she will drop in to that. She said Ford Motor Co handles the celebrity.
I'd like to distribute some packets before-hand if I can. I will drop off some of them at a friend's in Canton. 3Bears, do you want your friend's packages along with your own & family's? I can drop them off to you whenever it is convenient and that will give me an excuse to go shopping up your way. Otherwise, I will be at the race early and give those out unless anyone wants to arrange something else. Just let me know.
They made us a Team sign so that will be another way to find us when we meet.
I'm glad Alexandra was pleased with her packet! Do you know you got more donations offline?
I added Silvana to the list! Let me know what size bc.org t-shirt she would like. Tonya - nice talking to you offline. Judy, sent you a PM.
We saw some good team names. The Grand Ta Ta's and the Mojo. I don't know if it has the same meaning as our mojo post but we got a chuckle out of that one.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Nancy -
Hi everyone...I am looking so forward to this event! It will be a blast. We are planing on picking up Conniesue in Livonia area...does anyone else need a ride that morning? We will probably be down there all day.
Nancy-Thanks for sharing. I have to say...its been 2 years, 4 months, and I still think about it daily. Ugh!
Judy B.-I am going to O.U. and finshing up with my MBA program. When I went thru treatment, I often asked the techs if they had anyone else who worked full time +, went to school, and wore braces!!! At least I got those braces off!!!
Looking forward to seeing all of you. Lets try to get this group to grow...who cares about the pre registration anyways? -
I just want to prepare everyone in advance, I'll be wearing shorts for the Komen walk .
Be afraid, be very afraid!!!
No pictures PLEASE!!!!
kats -
it can't be any worse than me!!!!!! i'm wearing shorts too......yikes! my belly will be giggling for the whole 5k! lol! i REALLY look forward to meeting you all!
-
I have Conniesue on the list and sent in a revised t-shirt list to bc.org this morning. Also added Silvana, Tonya and Tonya's friend.
I have to tell you that last year it was in the 90's for the race and in the sea of women, guess who was the only one with long pants on? Jeans no less. Yes, moi. I don't think I have ever been so hot and thought I might pass out. I was sweating buckets.
I'm STILL not getting into shorts unless I'm in my back yard. Capris are out. Who wants to see my legs that look like stuffed sausages coming out the bottom? My 91 year old mother's legs look better than mine! I know, I'm not big but the legs are a total surprise. They're like they don't belong on this body. Alien legs. You get the picture!
We have to have pictures - and the crazy jacket is on its' way. We can put the kids in front of us.
I have a few maps but I guess I'll have to send them through email. Maybe we should think about meeting on the West side somewhere? My friend has good directions right down to which exit to take and to a parking lot. She is going to look for them and get back to me. -
Holy Moly - Kats noticed that we hit the top fundraising team page today. We are up against some very big Teams - like Visteon and Smith Barney. Thanks to Kats, Kay and Shel38 who are fundraising queens!
http://www.active.com/donate/detroitrace4thecure -
i've got another 500 + bucks in cash, and loads more online donations coming!!!!!!!! yay! but heeeellllpppp! how the heck do i input the cash onto my site?????? hubby is in california again so i don't have any "tech support" lol!
-
ok time for a laugh.........hubby just got approval to send my donation page around the office.........pres of chrysler canada called him in california to say they would be donating but "mike, i didn't realize your wife was so much older than you!!!!!!!!!" omg i'm dying of laughter, he thought the lady in the pic at the top of the page was me! when mike got done laughing he explained it wasn't me and the pres says........."we better up our donation"
wanted to give you guys a good laugh for the day! -
one last thing then i'm going for groceries!
my dad drilled holes in 40 BC quarters for me, sil and i put pink ribbons through the holes and tied one to our shoes........i'm gonna bring one for everybody......it looks "snazzy" lol! -
Ladies, is there anything I should do to prepare for the walk? I don't mean to sound stupid, but what is tradition or etiquette?
Nancy, I would love to get everyones packets now. Would you like to meet? I have a fairly free schedule right now, and could make anything work.
Kats and Shel I will also be wearing shorts. You will know me when you see two bright white illuminating legs approaching the tent-and that really is not a joke. -
shel38,
To do offline donations ie: cash or checks you need to fill out a form and mail it in with the monies.
You can use this link, http://www.karmanos.org/detroitraceforthecure/friendsfor.html
scroll 1/4 way down and you'll see where it says printable forms, click on that. Then you'll see the form you have to print out to send in with your offline donation monies you've collected. Once they've received the form and monies they will add those monies to your fundraising page.
kats
My daughter thought the 'older' lady in the pink cap on the fundrasing page was our Team captain. Sorry Nancy, I did tell her it wasn't you. -
Nancy,
90 degrees YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!
Please tell me the race last year was later in the summer and not in the beginning of June.
Sausage legs, you wanna see sausage legs just wait until you see mine??? Did you ever see sausages with tattoos, you'll see some on the 10th, now that's a scary thought isn't it????? I told you to be afraid, very afraid!!!!!!
