I take Red yeast rice for my high cholesterol and in 7 months it went from 276 to 171! My PCP approved it and my oncologist knows That I take it.

But there is only one brand that actually works .

A friend of mine had a cholesterol profile done because she could not take any statins and she was told to take that particular RYR!

Quit taking them, keep doing everything else you are currently doing & get retested in a couple months. That should answer the question. Like everything else, what works well for one, may not (or even make things worse) for another.

I would cut out the fish oil all together for now. You don't eat large quantities of licorice, do you? I've read that can raise triglycerides.

Cranberry juice is good for urinary tract infections too.

Gee, by the time you eat/drink everything that is good for you...there are no calories left for 'fun' Frown.

I recently started taking Salmon Oil because it has NO SOY.  Now all of my vitamins have NO SOY.  It took me a long time to find them, but they are out there.  B-complex is a stress vitamin, but some B complex vitamins have too much of each b vitamin percentage wise, like a b-complex 50 or 100.  Check the lable on you b complex and see what the percentages are of each vitamin.

I stopped all my vitamins until I found the soy free ones.

I've never heard of Omega 3 fish oil raising cholesterol, but eating candy and (bad) carbs will raise you're triglycerides.  My husband can attest to that.   And some drugs can also raise your cholesterol and triglycerides.

I also agree that we are all so different, that our bodies react differenty to supplements and medications.  I always get side effects form drugs when other people have no problems at all.

I take daily Omega 3, eat oatmeal with fruit daily for breakfast plus fiber supplements, drink LOTS of green tea and still have elevated total cholesterol 230.  IMO this happened with taking Femara and cannot get it down while on this medication.  However, my doctors really approve of my high HDL 110 and say not to worry ?????

No. What have you read about green tea extract?  I do drink green tea, but I'm sure the extract is much stronger, and how would we use it?

I hear you.  I had an attack of diverticulitis this past weekend and am on antibiotics to calm it down.  Wow -- that can be so painful.  I feel like I need a Users Manual regarding my health issues now....

Jo-5. I try to drink 3 cups of green tea every day, but on the odd day I don't, I take a green tea extract.

    Hi, Jo

I think it was ruthbru who told us about the benefits of Slo-Niacin to reduce cholesterol on the ArimidexSE thread.  It sure worked for me, and the SE of too much Niacin, well enough to effect cholesterol, was to RAISE my blood gulcose levels.

Many of the drugs (statins) to lower cholesterol have been shown in clinical trials, to effect about 10% or more people by raising their blood glucose levels which is why many docs no longer use them as a preventative, only when really necessary.

Think the redrice stuff is also estrogenic?  Can't remember, just know there was some "CAUTION" when I was researching it.  I use Nordic Natural Fish Oil daily ( liquid) and it seems to also be helping to keep my cholesteral level.  I also eliminated ALL DAIRY, that really helped too.

My BP went WAAAAA-AAY down with weight loss.  I'm in my 6th year (by choice) on Arimidex.

Wasn't it Otter who said "Are we having fun yet????"

Everything is so confusing!  I take Red Yeast Rice and my Oncologist knows about it.  She prescribed Arimidex and if the red Yeast Rice was NOT good for me, wouldn't she have said something?

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Mena, my onc has me taking red rice yeast rice as well. He is incredibly knowledgeable about supplements (I take many) and I have a hard time believing he would recommend it if it was harmful. It's been very effective for me.

JO-5, I keep a food diary online and the program also tracks cholesterol intake. Fatty fish does have cholesterol, so it would stand to reason that fish oil does too.

My cholesterol is OK for the time being, but I am on femara so I am watching it carefully, since I really want to avoid having to start the whole rollercoaster of taking more pills because of the pills I am already taking and so on.

So, I aim for 25 grams of fiber minimum a day. I limit my cholesterol intake to 200mg a day on average, I keep my carbs under 200 grams a day, usually around 150, and most of the carbs are high-fiber, low-glycemic ones. I rarely eat sugar, and when I do it is minimal. For example, a "sweet" treat will be scones made with oatmeal, vegetable oil (instead of butter), nuts, cinnamon and a few tablespoons of sugar rather than the 1/2 cup the recipe calls for. In addition I do my best to get in about 90 minutes of exercise a day, even if most of it is just walking. So far, these measures are keeping my cholesterol steady, in spite of the femara. Then again, it could also just be dumb luck. Time will tell if it keeps holding.

RosyFL, not sure where in FL you are.  If you have an Earth Origins close to you, check out their brand of Fish Oil Omega-3.  It does not contain soy.  I take it and have no problem with the "fish burps" some people experience.

cp418- I highly recommend pure organic Aloe Vera Juice if you have been diagnosed with diverticulitis. There are many studies, including a Gold Standard, which offer data confirming it's health benefits. It is not permitted during active treatment/chemo as per my MO but I have made it a regular part of my diet for over 20 years and have had 1 attack to date. It works wonders for any ' plumbing' issues. Hope this helps!Smile

Hi whaevah -- I just saw your reply and thanks so much for the aloe juice recommendation.  I will look it up as this is a medical issue I need to prevent. My PCP is already mentioned I should see a GI specialist but I had my 2nd colonoscopy last year - - it was clear except for diverticulitis.  I did not have this problem prior to receiving chemo treatments. Scans back then were all clear. I had severe GI problems while on adriamycin and ended up in the ER.  The doctors don't seem to accept that this was the start of this problem. So I would prefer to try more holistic approach for now.
