It all started as some simple discharge from one nipple. went to my doctors, sent for an ultrasound. Ultrasound questionable, doctor feels lumps under my arms, sends me for a mammogram. I got the call last friday that mammogram looked "ok" but I still have discharge from one nipple so they are sending me to get a ductogram to rule out DCIS. I dont even know what this is! or what a ductogram is. Is it painful? Is DCIS a form of breast cancer? Anyone who can answer my questions, I greatly appricate it!

DCIS is Stage 0 breast cancer.  It is breast cancer that has been caught at the earliest possible stage, when it is still non-invasive.  This means that the cancer cells are confined to the milk ducts and can't travel beyond the breast.  Because of this, DCIS, if fully removed, is 100% curable.

But don't start worrying about DCIS yet.  You say that you are having the ductogram "to rule out DCIS". And that's exactly correct. The ductogram is unlikely to find DCIS. In the studies I've seen, the percent of women who are found to have breast cancer as a result of nipple discharge ranges from as low as 1% to a high of 15%. Most of the studies fall in the range of about 3% - 5%.  So the odds are very much in your favor that you do not have DCIS but just have harmless nipple discharge.

Good luck, I hope that with your ductogram results you'll find that you don't have spend any time here on the DCIS forum!
