HeartBurn

Options

I am about to go into my third treatment of AC

I have had acid reflux for years and used pantaloc to keep the symptoms at bay

But now i just cant seem to control the burn.. i suppose this is due to the chemo eating away at my digestive system

I have only thrown up once ... thank you Emend...and have had nausea/dizziness but i am finding the burn much harder to cope with

Any advice?

    Hi Celineflower --

There's some really useful information on the main Breastcancer.org site on managing Heartburn or GERD as a side effect of breast cancer treatment.

    Hope this helps!

Celine...I just found your thread....Have you ever tried drinking Aloe Vera juice?  I buy it at Walmart, for less than $8 a gallon.  I mix it with any kind of fruit juice, & make a smoothie with a little cream, etc.  You can mix it with hot tea also.

I had ulcers once, and a friend told me to drink that at least 3 times a day... That pain went away!  Try it for your heart-burn....  I don't even drink it anymore, even though it is good for you!  I take Ranitidine whenever I get heart-burn.

My DH, and also my Brother in law drink it once in awhile, whenever they have problems.... Hope it works for you....

I feel your pain ... I had such bad heartburn during chemo that my sleep-drool bleached my pillow cases, and during the day I felt like a fire-breathing dragon. I too have a history of GERD. I was on a proton pump inhibitor (probably what pantoloc is?) and took Gaviscon liquid on top of that. I think the combo helped a bit but the heartburn was unbelievable.

I might also have taken Tums on top of the PPI and Gaviscon, but I can't remember. I tried Gravol Ginger tablets but they didn't help (I'm not sure whether they're even for heartburn, or just nausea). I didn't take ranitidine as someone told me not to take both a PPI and ranitidine; now I'm not sure that advice was correct as recently a pharmacist told me otherwise.

    Hope it eases soon!

I take pepcid, protonic, and a probiotic everyday. I am on A/C/T and basically eat a lot to prevent the nausea. Gained 30lbs so I dont suggest that. lol... I use to drink aloe vera a long time ago and it really helped alot. That was good advice. I would make sure it was cold and pour it on ice and hold my nose and swallow all of it at once. I probably drank 1/2 to 3/4 of a coffee cup size a day. I believe it healed any erosions or ulcers that was in my stomach or esophagus. Anither good tip is to elevate the head of your bed on bricks. Thats suppose to help keep the reflux down at night. Good luck.

I am having horrible heartburn since day 4 of first treatment (now day 7) and after trying baking doda and ginger, my dr prescribed ulcer medicine(calamere?) 4xday and more of the antacid i took during chemo. Better, but.... A friend said to get ubeshome plums from whole foods, that the japanese eat them dauly as a macrobiotic alkaline to tame acid stomach. Will try asap (wash well) and let you know.
