What does sternum mets feel like?

Options

Hello Ladies,

I am hoping some of you can help me. I am having a slight pain in my sternum. It's more like a pinching feeling than pain.Almost right where your heart is.  It only lasts half a second before it's gone. But, it is always in the same spot. It worsens if I take a deep breath or yawn. I also occasionally have a feeling of slight pressure. Again, very mild. This has been going on for 4 weeks now.

I am so worried that this is sternum mets. I realize I am early stage, but I can't help thinking about it. I have read that if it is heart problems, you can't pinpoint where the pain is. I can pinpoint the exact spot.  I have also read about a condition called costochondritis, which it sounds like, but from what I read this causes severe pain, which I do not have. Mine is so mild, I feel almost ridiculous even mentiioning it.

My next appt with my onc is in mid January. I don't know if I should wait until then or not. I hate to sound like a hypochondriac with him. Also, even if this was something to worry about, gauging by the slight pain, it must be so small, it wouldn't even show up on any scans is what I am thinking.

For those of you with sternum mets, did it start out with just a slight pinching feeling?

Thanks,

Kathy

Hello, Kathy. Sorry that you're worried at the moment. I have mets in and behind my sternum and don't currently feel any pain from them. When they were first discovered, I had major pain which didn't go away and got gradually worse over a period of a couple of months, but it felt like I was having a burning hot poker stabbed through my breastbone. This was because the tumour was so large by that time. In fact, I even broke my sternum as a result of the mets and treatment, but had no pain from that either.

If you are concerned and given that this has been going on for a month, you should get it checked out, if only for your own peace of mind. Good luck!

I have no pain from any of my bone mets. I was clueless until the bone scan.

Thank you both for answering. Seems like one had severe pain, one had none. Isn't that the way with cancer? You can just never tell what it's going to do, and each person has different symptoms it seems.

I guess I should go and have it checked out because it is really worrying me. Also, I'm tired of researching this until all hours of the night. Peace of mind would be wonderful.

    Thanks again.
