I went back to my desk job today - just over 4 weeks past surgery. I worked 8 hours. Made sure I got up from my desk and went for a walk around the block twice. Stripped off in our office shower room and moisturised three times.
Pretty tired both physically and mentally today but not too bad!
Got home to find two lots of mail - my free post-surgical bra sent by Breast Cancer Network Australia and my rub-on nipples from the USA arrived. The bra is really comfy and I plan on rubbing on some nipples after my shower before bed :-). This could be fun!

Jenn,
Interested to see how the nipples work out! Why do you have to moisturize 3 times a day? Just curious if I missed anything. Glad you did well at work. I don't think I could have worked at 4 weeks, even if at a desk!! -
My PS gives instructions to moisturise and massage my entire "front" at least 3 times a day starting at 3 weeks after surgery and preferably for a couple of months. He says to not buy any special moisturising creams but just to use a general body moisturiser that you would normally use...
I've been doing this and am sure it has helped make my stretched skin feel much better and I guess it is helping heal amd soften my abdo and breast incisions.

Hi ManadaLynn,
I had a delayed right DIEP at University of PA hospital in August. My right chest was also radiated so the skin was not as pliable as the rest of the surrounding skin My PS said there would be plenty (her words) of material to create a breast the same size as my remaining breast. I WISH they had moved skin because even though the cleavage side is made up of radiated skin and flap tissue and looks and feels fine, my PS did not appear to use all of the viable flap material and stopped short before reaching under my arm, overlapping tissue, leaving a huge area with no fill and the remaining skin feels glued to my ribcage. To view from the side, there is no gradual thinning of the new breast into the inderarm. It stops abrubtly as a huge lump. The breast is now small and narrow with several flaps under the arm. On top of the discomfort, the new breast is 2 full cup sizes smaller than my natural left breast. After already charging the insurance company for a lift of the left breast, my PS says she will need to do a reduction of the left side to make it the same size as the new breast. I have already cancelled the second stage of surgery so I can get several second opinions because I now have no trust in this PS.
My PS said she had done a thousand reconstructions and came very highly recommended but now I think I should have asked exactly how many were delayed DIEP procedures and to see those specific before and after pictures.
I am not able to let anything touch the underside of the breast near the ribcage because of the pain, even the softest of bras, so I wear a snug cotton cami, then padding to fill out the tiny side, then a tighter cami to hold the padding in place. Then I dress.
I don't want anyone to think I regret selecting the DIEP surgery. It is a wonderful and life-changing process for those who have had success with it (see 98% of the posts here!!) I had an issue with my specific PS and with her management of my expectations. My advice is to read these threads thoroughly, gather ALL of your questions and INSIST on detail and pictures of before and after. I thought I had been prepared, but the best preparation is to talk to many many others who have had this procedure done. Best of luck to on your next phase. -
Ronnie... My doctor gave me compression garments in the hospital, but the Marenas were a huge improvement. My assumption is that all doctors give something for compression. I had stage II surgery on a Monday and was back home Friday and drainless on the next Monday (one week post op)... at that point I called Marena and ordered my garments which arrived within 2 days. So for the first week and 2 days I was wearing the hospital girdle... a Veronique.

Going in Dec. 19th for the sGAP. Guess what I'll be getting for Christmas??

Hi everyone,
I had my Diep surgery on Sept11/2012 in London Ontario. I am going thru some things and wondering if this is normal. I had my right breast reconstructed and my left breast was reduced so they both would match. I have pain in my reduced breast not my reconstructed one. My incision hurts and the nipple is sore and tender. My chest really hurts when I get up from a lying position -my skin pulls. My abdomen incision inside, if that makes sense, my stomach hurts and pulls. I am wearing a sports bra and find that uncomfortable after awhile and the material bothers my nipple.
Is this normal ?

Diane31 I had a breast reduction 35 years ago and I had a lot of stabbing pains as the nerves reconnected, feeling zapping and zipping. As far as I know, that's not something that happens with DIEP because of the nature of the flap insertion from your belly, but with reduction, they are just taking bits out and reconnecting the raw edges in the same neighbourhood. Various things could set off the nerves, sometimes even just sitting there. I couldn't take a shower facing the faucet for 15 years! The good news is that it eventually faded away and I could sleep on the front etc, and the scar healed virtually invisibly and the whole job looked spectacular, right up to the point when I had to have them taken off!
I'm not sure if that's the pain you're talking about, but if it sounds similar, it's not necessarily a thing. It won't hurt to ask but don't be too worried ahead of time.

I have a nice squishy side and a firmer side too! My firmer side is the non-radiated side (although since I had internal rads, there wasn't expected to be much trouble with that side). Therapy has softened it up quite a bit. Will you do therapy, Mommaof4..it helped me so much with tissue softening and range of motion. I took a break from massaging my tummy scar (PT showed me best way to massage) and it seems a little more sensitive now...so keep rubbing! My scar is really pretty good...just wish it was a little straighter.
Beckers..it sounded to me like filling in w/the droplets of fat to create fullness in the upper breast was a one time thing...but I remember someone else on this site saying she would need more than one session for that. I'm sure if it's necessary, they'd do more...I just don't know if I'd want to bother (although it's nice to know PSs want good end results). Momma of 4-I sometimes look in the mirror and think...ugh...so many scars...just remember no more BC!!!! I think sometimes I forget the real reason behind diep flap!!!!
I know someone mentioned the pelvic bulge before. I have a bit of it and my PS isn't concerned & said he wouldn't do anything about it at stage 2...maybe when he does nipples. But I read on a tummy tuck site that it's not uncommon after that proceedure. My gp says it's just fat...but it seems like if it's just fat, PS would get rid of it now. Just another thing to throw out there :+)
Happy Healing to All!

A shout out to all our Sisters on the Eastern shores...Stay Safe!!! Thinking of you & hoping you & yours are out of harm's way in the Sandy storm!!!

Hi Goldlining
That is exactly what I am experiencing. Zapping shocks on my reduced breast. Now I know that its just the nerves in the breast. Thanks for your response.
-
Regenschirm, glad you got a date! I'll remember since it's our 20th anniversary. :-)
Whew. It's been a long week. Can't get comfortable in my lift chair so slept most of night in bed. Needed a little extra meds this morn. Jenn, thanks for advice with moisturizing. It makes sense that would help the tightness. A couple of my drain sites are sore. How long before they're all out? I have tegaderm everywhere too and am not sure if I keep it or take any off. The ones on my areolas came off with the monitors but are weepy. Don't wanna mess with belly button etc yet if everything weeps.
Hope east coast gals are safe. We have snow this morn in Ohio! -
And ronniekay we'll be thinking of you Thursday! Let us know how it goes.
Fran, hope the weather didn't interfere with starting the trial!
Is anyone else in the mroc study? They are looking at reconstruction decisions and satisfaction/ quality of life outcomes across several hospitals. They should do some reading here too! -
I need to learn more about scar massage. I did lots of PT leading up to surgery wth a lymphadema specialist. It helped so much. Any recommendations for massage techniques specific to diEp breast and abs? Is there a website?
-
I want to know more about scar massage.
I have been lightly massaging boobies few times day. Doing light circles. Sometimes i just do with clothes on to soften them up.
Start my trial tomorrow. Just had cold rain here in fred, va. I am getting pretty lazy though withbmy recoop. French toast on its way up. Might go to gym and do some easy walking on treadmill. Girls off fromschool too.
I think i am three weeks out -
Hi Everyone, I had my DIEP last Wednesday and have developed, for lack of a better word, a chord, going across my right breast just under the clavicle over to the right axilla. Anyone else had this? Also, my chest feels very tight, like it is being compressed.
I have no dressings on whatsoever, which alarms me given the opportunity for infection. The visiting nurse said that is because the incisions are covered with glue. I haven't had any dressings at all since surgery. Everything looks kind of gruesome right now, scars and all, but not too bad. Soreness mainly on the right axilla, don't really notice the abdominal incision. But boy these drains (i have six) are a real pain in the ARSE!
-
Ronnie, tell me more about this pelvic bulge...my incision is soooo low. He matched it to my bikini cut from sections.
About massage...thank you Jennt, as last night I started with the nice lotion my son bought me at the French store at Epcot...oh la la. Any special way to massage? As far as scar massage goes, scarring is made of collagen bands and you have to be firm in order to break up collagen (if the goal is to break up the scar tissue). I would make sure you get doctors ok and that your scars are ready for firm pressure. I am trying, but the spot on abdomen feels like a rock in there.
Sptmm, glad you made it through surgery well. I am not sure about cording. I did not have dressings due to the glue. My family was shocked when I told them they just glue us back together vs. staples. Wishing you a speedy recovery. -
Sorry, no special massage technique advice here - PS just said "moisturise and massage at least three times a day" and then at my follow-up (3 weeks) he said to start massaging more firmly as I can stand it.
I really notice how much more comfortable I feel (less tight) after moisturising and massaging each time...
Jenn -
Got my marena garment today, is much more comfy than that itchy spanx.
-
yay!
-
Does insurance cover any of the marena cost?
-
Mine didn't but I didn't submit a prescription along with my receipts. I was hoping they would connect the dots.. mastectomy, DIEP, GAP, lipo, compression, but alas no.
-
Hi bdavis - yes, you're right, I linked to the wrong page! Here's the link to the DIEP page: http://marnieclark.com/types-of-reconstruction-surgery-the-diep-flap/
I'd sure love some comments on the page from those of you who have had the DIEP flap - tell me whether you liked it, hated it, any pointers you'd like to share.
Thanks! And yes, I've written about the GAP flap as well: http://marnieclark.com/types-of-reconstruction-surgery-the-gap-flap-incl-igap-sgap/
Thanks for your feedback - my readers also very much appreciate your comments.
-
Mine wont. Seems to be no code
-
fredntan, when my physio does scar massage, she seems to press in with a couple fingers on each hand until there is a bit of resistance and then while keeping the pressure, kind of stretch the two spots apart just a bit. She works from side to side, just inching across. Holy crap does it hurt. I could never do it myself because I would wimp out. I don't make a priority of having it done, but we'll do it if I have time in the appointment.
-
Will try little more pressure on abd scar. Feels like a rope.
Do you know what happens in stage 2?
My left girl has the lollipop scar, is a nice C
But the right girl(radiated side) has the football scar, she is a B, much firmer then left.
He took all my fat from belly, I have no butt. Love handles?
I know they will never look the same. Hopefully scars fade in time.
I remember him telling me he makes nipples in part two -
Fredntan, was the Marena true to size? Is it super firm? Can you tolerate it for many hours? I have tried on so many things and they are hard to get on, roll down, camisoles are too hard to pull down. Maybe I'm struggling because Im curvy.
-
If you're having trouble with roll-down you can get compression garments with straps. The Marena girdle that comes up to under the bra line doesn't roll but it does tend to slide down a little during the day, and it can exaggerate back fat. I think they have a similar model with straps and a little back coverage. Look in the "body suits" section on marenagroup.com
-
I found it easy to get into. Just couldnt tolerate it in bed last nite. My docs instruc say 4weeks in girdle. Am on third, then wear during day till 8 weeks. I got the one that zips on side with easy open crotch.
I read ahead to stage two on this site. Says something about making a nipple out of part of your labia?.! I dont think so. -
Hi everyone,
I am just wondering how old you gals are and whether you are a lot younger than me. I have just turned 68 and will be having a BMX as soon as space becomes available in the OR. If I do the diep, it will be done in two stages, BMX first, then heal for 3 months then the diep.
Although I am physically active and fit I am just wondering if maybe 68 is a bit old for a diep, hence the question of how old you girls are, if you don't mind me asking.
